The next morning Mia went to Lest Park. She knew Lucas always went for his morning run there. She was going to ask him why he had been ignoring her.
As Lucas rounded the corner, Mia stepped out in front of him, blocking his path.
He looked at her, his eyes unreadable, and said nothing. She could see the muscles in his jaw tighten, and she knew that he was tense. "Why have you been avoiding me?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly.
He hesitated, then finally spoke. "I have my reasons," he said, his voice low and even.
"Well, I deserve to know what those reasons are," Mia said, a hint of anger in her tone. "I thought we were friends, but you've been ignoring me since my father passed”
“I don’t owe you an explanation!” Lucas yelled.
Mia was taken aback by Lucas's tone. She had never heard him speak to her like that before. She felt a wave of hurt wash over her, but she was also angry. "You're right, you don't owe me an explanation," she said, her voice surprisingly calm. "But I am your friend, and I thought you cared about me. I guess I was wrong."
"Our relationship from the past is over," Lucas said, turning to leave. "And you don't get to speak to me like that. You're not my mate."
Mia yelled, "No! I know you had the dream too. We are fated mates! You can't avoid me."
Lucas paused, "You do not get to speak to me like that," Lucas said, his voice cold and hard. "I am the alpha king, and you will show me the respect I deserve." He stepped closer to Mia, his eyes narrowed and his lips twisted into a cruel smile.
"You may have been chosen by the moon goddess, but you will never have a place in my heart or by my side," he said, his voice low and threatening.
Mia felt her heart sink. She had never seen this side of Lucas before. He was always kind and caring towards her, but now he seemed like a different person.
"If you ever set foot in my presence again, I will show you no mercy," Lucas said, his voice low and menacing.
"I reject you as my mate!" With those final words, he turned and walked away, leaving Mia alone and heartbroken.
Mia stood there, frozen in shock. She had never imagined that things would turn out like this. She had thought that she and Lucas were destined to be together, but now it seemed that everything had been a lie. She was left with a million questions and no answers.
Even though Mia was out of sight, Lucas kept walking, his heart pounding in his chest. He had just rejected the one person he had always thought was his destiny, and it had felt like he was rejecting a part of himself.
As he walked, he tried to convince himself that he had done the right thing. "I had to," he said to himself, over and over again. "It's for the best. She'll never have to know the truth." But deep down, he knew that he had broken his own heart as well as hers.
As he walked, he couldn't help but remember the last time he had seen Mia truly happy. Her long, red hair had been shining in the sunlight, and her brown eyes had been full of life and joy. He had thought that she was everything he could ever want, and now he had to face the fact that she was lost to him. He had broken her heart, and his own, and he wasn't sure if either of them would ever heal.
But then he remembered the real reason he had to do it. The reason he had to push her away and break both their hearts. He had to protect her.
*END OF FLASHBACK*

Mia got out of bed, she dragged herself to the bathroom. Showered got dressed for work and made a cup of coffee.
As Mia sipped her coffee, a news report on the television caught her eye. “This just in,” the newscaster announced, “A young woman named Ciara Chester has been found dead on the side of the road at 25th Moonshire Lane.
The police suspect that the Bloodcrest Nations, a group of rebels who oppose the alpha king, are responsible for the attack.”
Mia's heart dropped as she watched the news report, her hand shaking as she held her coffee cup. Ciara couldn't be dead, could she? She had to be okay.

The days dragged by, and Mia was determined to find out what happened to her best friend, she immersed herself in research about the Bloodcrest Nation. She read about their leader, Ethan Weston, and learned that he was a ruthless and violent man who would stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
Mia was filled with rage and grief, and she vowed to find the people responsible for Ciara's death. She wouldn't rest until they were all dead.
Mia stood on the rooftop of her apartment building, leaning against the railing and gazing out over the city as the half moon shined. The cool evening air blew gently, carrying the sounds of the city with it. Cars rushed by, their headlights like streaks of light in the night. Pedestrians bustled by, laughing and talking as they made their way home.
Mia remembered coming up here with Ciara, drinking wine and talking late into the night. They had shared so many memories together, and now Ciara was gone. The grief hit Mia like a wave, and she felt tears stinging her eyes.
Suddenly, Mia felt a cold breeze on her face, and when she turned, she was no longer alone on the rooftop. Standing in front of her was Ethan, his dark eyes glittering in the night. “I heard you've been looking for me,” he said, a cruel smile playing on his lips.
Mia's heart pounded in her chest. This was the man who had killed her best friend, and now he was standing right in front of her. “You...you're a monster,” she whispered, her voice shaking.
“Do you really think you can defeat me?” Ethan asked, his voice dripping with contempt. “I've had the strongest werewolves try to take me down, and they've all failed. What makes you think that you, a mere reject, could possibly succeed where they couldn't?”
He took a few steps closer, until he was only a few feet away from Mia. She could feel her heart racing, but she tried to steady herself.
“You may be strong, but I have something you don't,”she said, looking him directly in the eyes. “I have justice on my side.”
“Haha don’t flatter yourself. I also have something you don’t” Ethan said as he took another step. “What’s that?” Mia asked. “The truth about your father’s death!” He smiled.
Mia felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. The thought that Ethan might know the truth about her father's death was too much to bear.
She had always believed that his death had been an accident, but now she wasn't so sure. “My father died in a car accident!” she yelled, her voice cracking with emotion. “There's no way it could have been anything else!”
Ethan just laughed, the sound cold and mocking. “You're so naive, Mia. You have no idea what really happened to your father. But I do.” He took another step towards her, and Mia felt herself backing away.
“Join me, and I'll tell you everything,” Ethan said, his voice soft and persuasive. “I'll show you the truth.”
“Never!” Mia yelled, all thoughts of fear and self-preservation driven from her mind by her anger and determination. She launched herself at Ethan, intending to take him down. But he was stronger than she had anticipated, and he grabbed her by the neck, lifting her off the ground. “You're no match for me,” he said, his voice cold and cruel. “Don't fight, or you'll end up like Ciara.”
Ethan held Mia high above the ground, his grip tightening around her neck. But then, he felt sharp claws pierce through his back. He turned around, dropping Mia to the ground, and there, standing in the shadows, was Lucas. Mia scrambled to her feet, gasping for breath. “Lucas!” she exclaimed.
Ethan's smirk turned into a snarl as he charged at Lucas. The two men began to fight, exchanging blows with surprising speed and agility. For a moment, Lucas had Ethan in a chokehold, his grip strong and unyielding. But then, Ethan twisted out of his grasp and darted away, moving with impressive speed.
