Lucas rushed to Mia's side, helping her to her feet. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice full of concern.
“I'm fine,” she said, taking a deep breath. “But how did you know I was in trouble?”
“We’ve been tracking Ethan for months now but his location was undetectable. He finally reappeared and it was your home address on our system,” Lucas said, his eyes never leaving hers. “I knew I had to come” he responded as he helped her up.
“Thanks for saving me” Mia said as she turned to walk away. “Where do you think you’re going?” Lucas asked.
“Back to my apartment” Mia replied. “No, you're coming with me. For some reasons I don't know, you're Ethan's target now. It’s too dangerous for you to be alone. He might use you as bait to get to me or my team! I have to keep you close” he said, leaving no room for argument.
“I’ll come with you, only if you teach me how to fight like that,” Mia said, “I must get stronger if I want to avenge Ciara” a determined look on her face. Lucas looked down at her, his expression unreadable. For a moment, the only sound was the wind whispering.
And then, slowly, Mia saw a change come over Lucas. His eyes began to glow, and she could feel the mating enchantment taking hold.
Before Mia could even process what was happening, Lucas pulled her close and leaned down to her neck. A moment later, she felt his fangs pierce her skin.
“What are you doing?” she gasped, pushing him away in shock. Lucas blinked, as if coming out of a trance. He looked down at her neck, where two tiny puncture marks were starting to form. “No,” he said, his voice filled with horror. “I didn't mean to...”
Mia felt a strange tingling sensation in her body, as if something was happening to her on a deep, primal level.
“You marked me,” Mia said, her voice shaking.
Lucas looked away, unable to meet her gaze. “I...I don't know what came over me,” he said, his voice barely audible. “Let's just...go. We can talk about this later.” He turned and began to walk away, blocking Mia from his thoughts.
Lucas took Mia to the woods where he led to a secret passage, hidden by a thicket of trees.
The passage descended into the ground, revealing a hidden bunker. Inside, a team of people were working at high-tech computers, tracking movements and planning strategies. “This is my base of operations,” Lucas said, gesturing to the room.
“We've been working to take down the Bloodcrest for years.”
Lucas introduced Mia to his team of experts, all of whom seemed friendly and welcoming. But then a woman named Kira approached Lucas, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him on the lips.
As she turned to face Mia, she narrowed her eyes and said, “What's the rejected Luna doing here?” Her voice was full of malice, and Mia felt her anger rising.
“I'm here to help,” Mia said, her tone defiant.
“Help?” Kira asked, her voice dripping with scorn. She looked at Lucas, her expression incredulous.
“You're bringing in someone who's not even strong enough to protect herself? How is that going to help us? We're in the middle of a war, and we don't have time to babysit weaklings.”
Mia felt her cheeks flush with anger. “Weakling?” she said, her voice shaking with rage. “I may not be as strong as you, but that doesn't make me weak. I'm not afraid to fight for what I believe in.”
“Enough!” Lucas said, his voice booming through the room. Everyone stopped and looked at him.
“Mia is here to help, and that's the end of it. I won't have anyone questioning her strength or her purpose.”
He turned to David, who was working at one of the computers. “How's the hunt for Ethan going?” he asked.
“We haven't had any luck yet,” David replied. “He seems to have disappeared from the grid after the attack on Moonshire Lane. It's like he doesn't exist anymore.”
Mia felt a pang of grief at the mention of Ciara.
“I promise you, Ciara, I'll make them pay for what they did to you,” Mia thought, a fierce determination burning in her chest.
“I won't stop until they're all dead” She knew it wouldn't bring her friend back, but she had to do something.
Ciara deserved justice, and the Bloodcrest had to be stopped.
**************
The weeks that followed were lonely ones for Mia. Lucas's mansion was large and empty, with only the staff and security to keep her company.
She had not been to the hideout since the first time she had seen it, and she wondered what Lucas was doing there without her.
She felt like she was being kept in the dark, excluded from the plans to take down Ethan and his supporters. It was frustrating and lonely, and she began to question whether she had made the right decision in coming here.
Mia felt trapped in the house, unable to leave without an escort. She was starting to feel useless and hopeless
As she stood by her bedroom window, looking up at the full moon. She could hear packs of werewolves in the distance, singing to appease the moon goddess.
At 23 Mia still couldn't transform. And tonight, she had no one to share the experience with, now that Ciara was gone. It was a lonely and bittersweet moment.
Tears stung her eyes as she thought of her best friend.
Hours later, Mia lay in her bed, trying to sleep, but it was no use.
She felt hot, like her body was on fire. She tossed and turned, but it was no use. She felt restless, like something was calling to her. Suddenly, she sat up in bed, her heart racing.
She had to get up, she had to move. She got out of bed and walked down the hallway, not knowing where she was going, but knowing that she had to go somewhere.
There was something inside of her, something pulling her, something calling to her.
It hit her then, like a lightning bolt. She was in heat, and she could feel the pull of the bond that connected her to Lucas. She was drawn to him, like a moth to a flame. As she wandered the halls of the mansion, she heard the front door open. Lucas was home.
Without thinking, she ran towards him, her body on fire. She reached for him, pulling him close and kissing him with a passion.
Lucas felt Mia's heart beating wildly, and he knew exactly what was happening.
The mate bond was pulling them together, and there was no way to resist it. He returned her kiss, matching her intensity. Mia's hands were fumbling with the buttons on his shirt, and she ripped it open, her fingers grazing the skin of his chest.
He pulled her closer, his desire rising with each passing second. She was his mate, the other half of his soul, and there was nothing he wanted more at that moment than to feel her.
