Chapter One: The Girl Beneath the Ashes
They used to call it Emberfall—a kingdom of fire, ruled by magic and royalty. But now it was a land of ash. Ash fell from the sky like snow, quiet and endless. It covered houses, streets, and people. It had fallen every day since the Ember Queen disappeared seventeen years ago. That was when the fire left the land—and silence took its place. And tonight, the silence felt wrong. Kaelith crouched inside the ruins of an old chapel, her hand wrapped tightly around a small iron dagger. The wind howled outside. Her cloak was torn and smelled like smoke, but it helped keep her warm. The chapel walls were cracked and black with soot, but it gave her a safe place to watch the streets below. The city square was full of tension. Royal guards dressed in red cloaks marched through the alleys, holding torches. Their boots hit the stone roads with loud, heavy steps. Every few minutes, they dragged someone away—a merchant, a beggar, anyone who looked suspicious. Kaelith stayed low. Her heart beat faster. “Have you seen the girl?” one of the guards shouted. “Black hair. Scar under her left eye. Last seen near the Bone Bridge!” She touched the scar below her eye. It wasn’t a normal scar. It shimmered faintly in the light, like it still held heat. She couldn’t hide it, no matter how hard she tried. They were looking for her. But she didn’t know why. Three nights ago, everything changed. She had been sleeping in the orphan shelter, just like always. The fire was low, and the other kids were asleep. Then suddenly, she woke up to screaming. The building was on fire. Smoke filled the air. And in the middle of the flames stood a stranger in a black cloak. He didn’t burn. The fire danced around him like it belonged to him. And when he looked at Kaelith, he spoke one word. “Heir.” Then everything went black. She escaped through a window before the building collapsed. Since then, she had been hiding. Running. And for some reason, the guards were now searching for her like she was a threat to the whole kingdom. But she didn’t understand why. “Kaelith,” a voice whispered behind her. She jumped and turned, knife ready. But it was only Rian—her friend, fast-talking and clever, with light hair and a nervous smile. He wore a hood covered in soot and smelled like sewer water. “You’re late,” she whispered. “I had to climb through a tunnel full of rats,” he said, shivering. “I hate rats.” “What did you hear?” “They’ve doubled the guards,” Rian said. “People are scared. A baker was arrested just for lighting his oven. A priest got taken because his robe had the Ember symbol.” Kaelith’s stomach dropped. She had seen that symbol before—a flame with a crown over it. The man in her dream had worn it on his cloak. And last night, she saw it again in her sleep, burning in the sky. “I think something’s wrong with me,” she said quietly. “I’ve been dreaming of places I’ve never seen. And yesterday, I got scared—and the wall near me caught fire. I didn’t even touch it. The flames just came.” Rian stared at her, wide-eyed. “Kaelith, you can’t say stuff like that. Even to me.” “I know. But I think I’m the reason the guards are afraid.” He sat down beside her, speechless. Then slowly, he pulled out a piece of paper from his bag. “I found this posted near the city gates. Someone tore it down before the guards saw it.” Kaelith opened the paper. Her blood ran cold. It was a wanted poster. Her face was drawn in charcoal, and her name was written below it. “By order of the Crown Regent— Seize the girl born of flame. She is the Last Heir of Embers. Alive.” To be continued...
