chapter 1
Chapter 1 The plane's wheels touched down with a gentle bump, jolting Chipo out of her reverie. She peered through the small window at the sprawling city of New York, a bustling metropolis that seemed a world away from the quiet streets of Lusaka. This city, with its towering skyscrapers and ceaseless energy, was now her new home. She was here to work at Sterling Designs, a prestigious firm owned by her estranged father’s best friend, David Sterling.Chipo’s heart raced with a mix of excitement and trepidation. The opportunity was both a dream and a daunting challenge, especially given the family ties and unresolved feelings that lingered in the background. The chance to prove herself in such a prestigious firm was thrilling, but the thought of meeting David, who she had only heard about in hushed tones and occasional letters, filled her with uncertainty. AS she navigated the crowded terminal, Chipo's thoughts drifted to the man she was about to meet. David Sterling, her new boss, was a name she had heard often in the hushed conversations between her mother and the few letters her father had sent. He was described as brilliant, exacting, and fiercely loyal—a man whose approval seemed almost unattainable. “Ms. Anderson?" A deep voice interrupted her thoughts. Chipo looked up to see a tall man in a well-tailored suit holding a sign with her name. His eyes were a striking blue, and his expression was one of polite curiosity, but there was an unmistakable air of arrogance about him."Yes, that's me," she replied, extending her hand. “I’m David Sterling," he said, shaking her hand with a firm grip but barely glancing at her. "Welcome to New York. I hope your flight was pleasant.” It was, thank you," Chipo said, trying to mask her nerves with a confident smile. David gave a curt nod and led her to a waiting car with an air of impatience. As they walked, an elderly driver in a crisp uniform stepped out to open the door for them. He gave Chipo a warm smile, which she returned gratefully. “Good afternoon, Miss Anderson," the driver said. "I'm Henry. I'll be driving you to your new apartment.” Thank you, Henry," Chipo said, appreciating his kindness. The car navigated through the bustling streets of Manhattan, with David sitting beside her, his attention focused on his phone. He outlined the immediate plans for her onboarding, his tone brusque and business-like .“We’ll need to hit the ground running,” he said, his gaze fixed ahead. “This project is crucial for our firm, and I’m counting on your expertise.”Chipo nodded, the weight of his expectations settling on her shoulders. She had prepared for this moment, yet the reality of it all felt overwhelming. But she was determined to prove herself, not just as a capable designer, but as a worthy member of the team. AS they drove through the bustling streets of Manhattan, Chipo stole glances at the city's skyline. The sheer scale of it all was both intimidating and inspiring. She couldn’t help but wonder how she would fit into this world. David’s phone buzzed, pulling him into a brief, terse conversation. Chipo took the opportunity to observe him more closely. His sharp features and the furrow in his brow spoke of a man used to control, someone who thrived on precision and order. There was an air of detachment about him, as if he had already evaluated her and found her lacking. The car pulled up to a sleek, modern building. Sterling Designs' headquarters loomed above them, a testament to contemporary architecture and David’s influence in the design world.Inside, the office was a hive of activity. The open-plan space buzzed with the energy of designers and architects immersed in their work. Chipo felt a mix of excitement and pressure as she followed David through the labyrinth of desks and meeting rooms. He led her to a spacious conference room where several team members were already gathered. David introduced her with a terse, "This is Chipo Anderson, our new designer," before launching into a briefing on the critical project they were about to undertake. The project was an ambitious redesign of a historic hotel in the heart of Manhattan. The Sterling Designs team had been working on it for months, but recent complications had thrown their progress into chaos. Now, with a looming deadline, they needed a fresh perspective—and fast.David clicked through the presentation slides with swift efficiency, his tone sharp and his gaze never wavering from the screen. Chipo took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She had to prove herself, and this was her chance. We’ll divide the work among the team," David announced. "Chipo, you'll handle the main lobby redesign. I expect your initial concepts by the end of the week.” Chipo nodded, determined to meet his high expectations. As the meeting concluded, she gathered her notes and made her way to her new workspace. The open-plan office buzzed with activity, and she felt a mix of excitement and pressure as she set up her station. “Hey, my name is Maria.” A pretty woman of espanic decent stood by her desk with a big smile. “Hey, I saw you in the meeting.” “ I am David’s assistance. I cant believe he brought you striaght from the airport. You must be exhaushed after so many hours on the plane.” Maria complained. “ I am so tired. Is he always so demanding?” “ He is, just because he has no life out of work he forgets the rest of us have to live.” “ I hope I will be able to impress him, this opportunity is a big deal to me.” Chipo mattered. Maria’s countenance changed and chipo noticed David’s tall frame standing next to her. “ Are you settled in? “ David asked. “ Yes” Chipo replied. “ Excuse me ,sir.” Maria walked away. “ Henry will take you to your apartment. You will resume work tomorrow.” David said and walked away. Over the next few days, Chipo threw herself into the project, working long hours to create designs that were both innovative and respectful of the hotel's history. She barely saw David, who remained cloistered in his office or in meetings, his aloof presence a constant reminder of the stakes. On the fourth day, as Chipo was putting the finishing touches on her concepts, she received an urgent email from David: "Meeting in my office. Now.” Her heart skipped a beat. Gathering her sketches and laptop, she hurried to his office. She knocked lightly before entering, finding David standing by the window, his back to her."Sit," he said without turning around. Chipo took a seat, her hands gripping the edges of her portfolio. David finally turned, his expression unreadable. “ We have a problem," he said, his voice low. "The hotel's owners are having second thoughts about the entire project. They want to see a complete redesign by tomorrow, or they'll pull out.” Chipo’s mind raced. A complete redesign in less than 24 hours? It seemed impossible."I need you to come up with a new concept for the lobby," David continued. "Something that will impress them and save this project. “Chipo took a deep breath, her determination solidifying. "I'll get it done," she said, meeting his gaze with a steady confidence she didn’t entirely feel.David nodded, a flicker of something—approval?—crossing his face. "Good. Get to work. And Chipo—""Yes? “Don’t let me down."
