Chapter 1 :- Betrayed Before the Crown
~ Selene ~
Walking into the chamber of the man who had humiliated me, who had turned me into a laughingstock, took more courage than I thought I possessed.
It was too late to turn back now. He had to face the consequences.
“I’m four weeks gone, Zane,” I forced out, my fingers digging into the crumpled, sealed paper in my hand. Every second felt unbearable.
His expression faltered. Doubt flickered briefly, then his signature smirk returned, sharp and mocking.
“Her Majesty,” he bowed theatrically. “Shouldn’t you be preparing for your coronation as the ‘awaited’ Luna?”
“Drop the act, Zane,” I ground out, teeth clenched.
He sighed, frustrated. “Clearly, you don’t appreciate accolades. I’m in a meeting. Let’s talk later.”
Then I noticed her. The woman seated beside him: middle-aged, composed, dressed in dark attire, radiating quiet authority.
She said nothing, yet her presence pressed down on the room like cold steel. I had never seen her, but she had to be high-ranking in the Wolfsbane Pack.
Swallowing hard, I hurled the paper at Zane’s feet.
“There,” I said, fighting tears. “Your karma.”
He laughed, clutching his stomach, amused. “We had s*x, Selene.”
My voice shook, but I forced the words out. “You raped me.”
The room seemed to shrink. He raised an eyebrow. “And?”
“You raped your brother’s mate, you monster,” I spat. “What am I supposed to tell Lucien?”
Zane rose, expression as cold as the woman’s.
“Truth?” he said with a shrug. “Let’s see if he believes you. Or are you suddenly dying to give the Beta an heir?”
Pain shot through me as I turned to the woman, silently pleading for outrage. But she remained a statue—cold, unmoved, indifferent.
Sweat slid down my nose as Zane continued, cruel and deliberate:
“A frail human, catching the attention of two brothers. Claimed by an Alpha… and now in the bed of a Beta. Honestly, I’m not claiming any illegitimate child. You’ve been marked, Selene.”
Those words shattered me. Rejected by the father of my unborn child. Manipulated. Betrayed.
I had met them only three months ago. Lucien, my Alpha, and Zane, his elder brother. Humans like me were rarely chosen, and yet… here I was.
Everyone in Oakridge town knew the packs. For generations, werewolves had guarded the human realm from rogues in the dark forests beyond. The Silvercrest Pack. The Nightclaw Pack. And above all, the Wolfsbane Pack—the most feared, powerful, and respected of them all.
Being chosen by an Alpha was the highest honor.
I was just a bartender on the edge of town, an orphan surviving on tips and long nights, in a place people visited when they didn’t want to be seen.
Then one night, the bell above the door rang.
Lucien Blackwood stepped in. The room fell silent. The Alpha of the Wolfsbane Pack wasn’t someone ignored. Behind him, Zane watched, silent and calculating.
His gaze landed on me. My chest tightened. As I handed him his drink, our fingers brushed, a jolt shot through me.
“You’re mine,” he said.
No ceremony. Just a simple, irrevocable claim.
Zane went rigid, eyes flickering between us. Every human in Ravenridge would die for that honor and it was mine.
“I cursed the day I knew you,” I spat, casting one last glance at the inscrutable woman and the man who had defiled me.
I had one last hope.
Lucien. My mate.
He would believe me. He had to.
Because if he didn’t.....I would lose everything.
And the child inside me would be born into a world that already wanted it dead.
I walked toward the door, my hands trembling.
Behind me, Zane’s voice followed me, calm and deadly.
“Go ahead, Selene. Tell my brother.”
I paused.
His footsteps echoed slowly behind me.
“But be careful,” he murmured near my ear. “Once you accuse me… there’s no going back.”
My heart skipped. He leaned closer.
“Because when you fall… you’ll fall alone.”
A chill ran down my spine.
Fear replaced anger.
Something about his tone told me… This wasn’t just denial.
It was a warning.

When she stepped into my chamber, I felt it—the weight of her presence, heavy, trembling, suffocating the air. I didn’t turn. Not yet. Not until I could steady myself.
“I swear it,” she sobbed. “I was raped.”
Kael, my wolf, snarled deep in my chest. Muscles tightened. Claws itched. I forced myself still. Not for her. For control.
“Why… why didn’t you tell me?” I demanded, voice low. “Why hide this from me, Selene?”
“I… I was scared,” she whispered, trembling.
My heart clenched, fury and disbelief roiling. “Who’s responsible?”
Her fragile voice stuttered,
“Z-Zane… your brother.”
The world stopped. My chest constricted. A laugh, sharp and bitter, escaped me; not victorious, but dangerous. This couldn’t be real. Not him. Not Zane.
“Quite an actress,” I said finally, voice poisonous. Slowly, I turned, letting the pale moonlight trace my face. “Why a bartender?”
Her swollen eyes met mine. “I’m not lying. Zane raped me and I’m pregnant.”
Pain cut through me, Kael’s mournful growl echoing the betrayal.
“I should have known you’d come to me when it mattered most,” I said. “The night you were to become Luna… your conscience kept eating at you.”
She flinched, tears spilling freely.
“I—” she began.
“No. Don’t,” I interrupted. Duty, council, protocol—iron chains around my heart. Love had its place. Duty had its place. Tonight, duty would win.
“Prepare yourself,” I said low, leaving no room for hope. “The council will decide your fate tonight.”
As she turned, I remained distant, watching helplessly, a mate pulled deep in my chest. But tonight… tonight, duty won.
