1 THE WOMAN HE WAS SUPPOSE TO FORGET
The first time Elena Vale saw her husband after three months apart, he was standing beside another woman. And smiling. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the woman's hand resting lightly against his arm. Not the cameras flashing around them. Not even the headline already spreading across the giant screens outside the hotel. It was the smile. Ethan Sterling rarely smiled. Not genuinely. Not in public. Not for photographers. Not even for her. Yet tonight, beneath the golden lights of the Sterling Foundation's annual charity gala, he looked almost happy. Elena stood across the crowded ballroom, completely frozen. Her fingers tightened around the invitation she was holding. STERLING FOUNDATION — ANNUAL CHARITY GALA She had almost decided not to come. Three months ago, Ethan had left their penthouse without explanation. No argument. No goodbye. Just one sentence from his assistant. Mr. Sterling needs space. Three months. Ninety-two days. And Elena had received exactly three messages from her husband. All three had been painfully short. I'm busy. Don't wait up. I'll handle everything. She had told herself she didn't care. She had repeated it so many times that eventually she almost believed it. Then she saw him. And everything she had carefully buried came rushing back. "Ethan..." His name escaped her lips before she could stop herself. A woman beside her glanced over. "Do you know him?" Elena forced a smile. "Unfortunately." The woman laughed, thinking she was joking. Elena wasn't. Across the ballroom, Ethan suddenly turned. Their eyes met. For one brief second, the noise disappeared. His smile vanished. His expression changed so quickly that Elena almost wondered if she'd imagined it. Shock. Then recognition. Then something darker. Fear. Ethan Sterling looked afraid to see his own wife. Elena's heart skipped. Why? Before she could think about it, the woman beside him leaned closer and whispered something into his ear. Ethan looked away. That small gesture broke whatever spell had held Elena still. She straightened her shoulders. She wasn't going to chase him. Not tonight. Not ever again. She turned toward the exit. "Leaving already?" The deep voice behind her stopped her. Elena's entire body stiffened. She slowly turned. Ethan stood only a few feet away. Up close, he looked exactly as she remembered. Tall. Impossibly composed. Black suit. Cold eyes. The kind of face magazines loved putting on their covers. The billionaire heir everyone wanted to know. The husband nobody understood. Elena looked at him without saying anything. His gaze moved over her face. Then her dress. Then back to her eyes. "You came." She almost laughed. "Apparently." His jaw tightened. "You shouldn't have." There it was. Not I'm glad you're here. Not How have you been? Not even I missed you. Just— You shouldn't have. Elena nodded slowly. "Don't worry. I won't stay long." She stepped past him. His hand caught her wrist. The contact lasted barely a second. But both of them froze. Ethan released her immediately. "Elena." She turned. "What?" He stared at her. For the first time that night, the billionaire looked uncertain. "There are things you don't know." Her brows knitted. "About what?" He glanced toward the ballroom. The woman he'd been standing beside was watching them. Ethan lowered his voice. "About us." Elena's stomach tightened. "What about us?" He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Then a voice interrupted them. "Mr. Sterling." Ethan looked over his shoulder. His grandfather, Alexander Sterling, stood several feet away. The old man's face was expressionless. But his eyes were fixed on Elena. And there was something deeply unsettling about the way he looked at her. Not anger. Not disappointment. Recognition. As if he'd seen a ghost. Alexander walked toward them. "Ethan." "Grandfather." "Who is this?" Elena stared at him. For a moment, she thought she had misheard. Ethan's expression hardened. "She's my wife." Alexander's face changed. Only slightly. But Elena saw it. The old man's fingers tightened around his cane. "Your wife?" "Yes." Alexander looked at Elena again. Then he whispered something that made the blood drain from her face. "That's impossible." The ballroom suddenly seemed colder. Elena swallowed. "What did you say?" Alexander didn't answer. Instead, he looked at Ethan. "Where did you find her?" Elena's heart pounded. Find her? What was that supposed to mean? Ethan stepped between them. "Grandfather, enough." Alexander ignored him. He continued staring at Elena. "What is your mother's name?" Elena blinked. "My mother?" "Answer me." "Marissa Vale." The old man's face went pale. Ethan noticed. "Grandfather." Alexander took one slow step backward. Then another. His lips moved. "She's alive..." Elena stared at him. "What are you talking about?" But Alexander had already turned away. "Ethan." His voice was suddenly weak. "Do not let her leave this building." Elena's eyes widened. "What?" Ethan grabbed her arm. "Come with me." She pulled away. "Absolutely not." "Elena, listen to me." "No." She stared at him, anger replacing confusion. "You disappear for three months. You show up with another woman. Your grandfather looks at me like I'm some kind of criminal. And now you're ordering me around?" His expression darkened. "You don't understand." "Then explain." "I can't." She laughed bitterly. "Of course you can't." She turned away. Ethan caught her hand again. This time, his voice dropped. "Someone has been looking for you." Elena stopped. "What?" "Someone dangerous." She slowly turned back. "Who?" "I don't know." "You expect me to believe that?" "I expect you to trust me." She stared at him. After three months of silence, those words almost felt insulting. "You lost the right to ask for my trust." Ethan flinched. It was subtle. But she saw it. Then the ballroom lights went out. A collective gasp swept through the room. Someone screamed. Emergency lights flickered on. And Elena heard a sharp sound behind her. Glass breaking. She turned. A man in a dark suit was standing near the entrance. He was looking directly at her. Their eyes met. He smiled. Then he raised one hand. A small red laser dot appeared on Elena's chest. Ethan saw it. "ELENA!" He lunged toward her. The ballroom erupted into chaos. People screamed and rushed toward the exits. Ethan grabbed Elena and pulled her behind a marble pillar as something struck the wall where she had been standing. Elena's heart hammered. "What is happening?" "Stay down." "Who was that?" "I don't know." Another impact cracked against the pillar. Ethan tightened his grip around her hand. "Can you run?" "What?" "When I tell you, run toward the service corridor." "But—" "Elena." His voice was different now. No arrogance. No coldness. Only fear. "Please." She stared at him. It was the first time Ethan Sterling had ever said please to her. Then someone shouted from across the ballroom. "THE WOMAN!" Elena's blood ran cold. "The woman with Sterling!" Several men in black began moving through the crowd. They weren't security. They were searching for her. Ethan looked at them. Then at Elena. "You're the reason they're here." She shook her head. "I don't understand." "I know." "Then tell me!" He looked into her eyes. And finally said the words that would change everything. "Because three years ago, when I married you..." He paused. "...I was told your name was Elena Vale." Her breathing stopped. "And?" Ethan's expression was almost unreadable. "That isn't your real name." Silence. Elena stared at him. "What?" "You weren't supposed to remember." Her head began to spin. "Remember what?" Ethan reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black envelope. He handed it to her. "I found this in my father's private safe yesterday." Her fingers trembled as she took it. There was no name on the envelope. Only a date. SEPTEMBER 17, 2019. Elena stared at it. "I wasn't married to you then." "I know." "Then why does this have anything to do with me?" Ethan looked toward the approaching men. "Because that's the night you disappeared." Elena's face went pale. "I never disappeared." Ethan's eyes met hers. "That's what I thought too." He swallowed. "Until I saw the photograph." Elena slowly opened the envelope. A photograph slid into her palm. Her breath caught. It showed a young woman standing outside a burning building. The image was blurry. But the face wasn't. It was hers. Elena dropped the photograph. "No..." Ethan crouched and picked it up. "There's more." He turned it over. Written on the back were six words. SHE MUST NEVER REMEMBER WHO SHE IS. Elena stared at the handwriting. She recognized it. Her fingers went numb. "That's impossible." Ethan frowned. "You know the handwriting?" She couldn't answer. Because suddenly, somewhere deep inside her mind, a memory surfaced. Rain. Flames. Someone screaming her name. Not Elena. A different name. A name she hadn't heard in years. A name she'd been told never existed. Then a man's voice whispered through the memory. Run, Victoria. Elena's eyes widened. And across the ballroom, an old man who had been watching her suddenly smiled. He wasn't afraid anymore. He looked relieved. Because Elena had finally remembered. Victoria.
