ʚ♡ɞ Main Street housed "La crème du monde des affaires" as Xavier always put it. McKenzie would go on for hours pointing out how wrong he was, "all I am saying is the place is mediocre, they don't deserve the credit" had been her opening remark to a failed conversation that had proven to always age like milk over the few weeks her heart had been broken by no other than Mathew Lancaster. She went on ranting about her resentment towards its selfish privileged men who had dominated the place. In her defense the reasons for her newly found hatred were valid, they were immoral and lacked self-control, and they couldn't handle the pressure that came with the slightest amount of competition not that any of it made sense. One of those selfish privileged men happened to be her father. He had owned a building on Main Street for as long as his teenage years when his parents handed down an entertainment label to him to teach him the ropes, his label signed some of the best artists earning him millions that pilled in his bank account. Like every other time, Xavier pointed out the fact that her father, whom she loved so much owned one of the major buildings on that street. Last night's dinner ended up being an absolute mess as what started out as a normal conversation ended as a heated argument. The argument in question typically arose the few times we shared a glass of wine over dinner to check up on each other, dinner attendance was taken very seriously after the Zayn Lancaster cheating scandal that was all over the tabloids. I occasionally took sips from the wine glass I had held for the past few minutes. The voices of angry Mckenzie and nonchalant Xavier cut through the air, Joan rarely meddled in such conversation all she did was tap away on her phone and node the few times a question was thrown our way. I decided to let today's conversation trade by without butting in from exhaustion, my body had been aching for days from wearing heels and standing for long periods. I was back to openly looking for reputable places willing to take on an entry-level intern with zero experience, but it turned out that nobody was. All the firms wanted someone with unattainable amounts of expertise. Running low on cash was enough motivation to get back to the never-yielding job hunt I put an end to three months ago. I needed a fixed source of income the freelancing and tutoring were not paying off as much as they did when I just started out. My flatmates and only friends Joan, Mckenzie, and Xavier landed internships at some of the best firms very early into their degrees, In our freshmen year despite the constant partying they were able to keep their grades up and have numerous firms lining up to offer them permanent positions, it helped a lot that their parents had an active presence on the school board and uncountable shares in some of the biggest firms in the city. My friends tried pulling strings for me but that wasn't something my subconscious would freely let me enjoy, three minutes into accepting their offer my brain would have created a million worst-case scenarios that would have me turn down the offer anyway. My parents taught me early in life about the satisfaction of single-handedly achieving your goals. After a few months of constantly emailing my resume to multiple firms, the frustration of facing the real world hit me and I shamelessly gave in to letting my friend's connections help me to land a decent job. My phone was as busy as an emergency hotline. They had on several occasions put in a good word to their supervisors for their secretarial vacancies, but half of the firms called me in for an interview just to turn me down saying they were not looking for a child to take the role. The last place I tried dismissed me with "Unfortunately we are looking for somebody eye-catching, maybe if you dressed more appropriately I would have pulled a few more strings than you already did with Mr. Knox" My jaw dropped at the seriousness in her tone. Everyone at the firm heard about what Patrice said to me. Joan told me all about it, she works on the eighth floor! Six floors above the recruitment office. ʚ♡ɞ It was chilly outside there was only so much the thin layered blouse Joan had gifted me to wear for this particular interview was doing to keep me from freezing to death, I routinely took a few sips from the overpriced coffee I purchased from the fancy café along the street, it tasted like s**t on all the occasions I purchased it but I found myself going back for more maybe, it was the type of preparation I needed before the rejection that became music to my ears each time a possible employer rang for me to drop by the office for an interview. Today the coffee was different. The bitter taste that overpowered the sweetness tasted pleasant. I was standing in front of the eleven-story building owned by the business giant Zayn Lancaster, who was technically my boss and the father to McKenzies' cheater of an ex-boyfriend The Black Sterling Silver Group building had to be the cherry on the cake. Everyone was looking to work there even as a paper cutter because of the reputation the workers there earned, working there for two weeks landed you a great position at the journalism firm on downtown Avenue depending on the information you were willing to give in exchange. Upon showing him the appointment card Patrice emailed me two days ago, the doorman let me in. Everything was perfect in every way. The glass walls of the building reflected small flushes of the soft rays of sunlight into the building in the most refined way. The pieces of furniture in the building were either white or black, and the only shades of color were the large paintings that adorned the minimal concrete walls. The blonde receptionist maintained eye contact until I was standing a few inches from her desk. "Miss?" The receptionist asked with a raised brow. "Lilly Blake" I confidently returned with a small soft smile, my heart was nearly busting from excitement as I stared at the large block letters behind the receptionist's desk that spelled out Black Sterlings Silver Group. If someone had told me two weeks ago that instead of taking in the beautiful office building, I'd be watering over a fellow woman I would have slapped them right across the face calling them a lair. She was gorgeous she wore her shiny blonde hair in a sleek bun, and her plump lips were covered in the most vibrant shade of red I'd ever seen every single detail on her body matched the other so perfectly. My heart was full of satisfaction while my brain let random thoughts about how much I had put up with to get this job and how the string pulling worked out. I couldn't help but feel a little bit guilty about how I landed this job and how someone out there with better qualifications has missed out on an opportunity they deserved. I am not proud of it. The system is rotten, I had to beat the system by joining the system. After two minutes of staring at everything around me fully digesting every little detail the blonde whose name is nowhere in sight talks me out of my daydream "Mr. Lancaster will see you right about now." a very bright smile formed on her perfectly shaped face as she examined me one last time before she went back to looking at the screen in front of her. "You're too innocent for this place, love aren't there other places you could have reached out to?" seeing that I did not intend to respond to her question, she brushed it off with a giggle judging from the brightness on her face, it was hard to tell whether it was a genuine smile or not. If it wasn't, she did a perfect job of masking it. She handed me the file with all the necessary information I needed to "settle in," as she had put It. I turned away from the front desk and began walking in any direction that meant not standing before the receptionist whose name I hadn't figured out. "You're so adorable, you know that?" was all she said as she pointed me towards the direction elevators that led to the conference room Mr. Lancaster requested me to meet him. After minutes of getting lost on the eleventh floor in what seemed to be a maze of an office, I was standing in front of the conference room. Not knowing what to do next, I lightly knocked on the door a couple of times, but no one responded. I took it the room was empty, It felt like a smart idea to be the first one in the room. I would be less nervous if I had become familiar with the space before Mr. Lancaster arrived. I opened the door and froze at the sight before my eyes. Two half-naked girls and a man who seemed to be twice their age were having s*x on the large wooden table, and their loud moans filled the air. They were aware of my intrusion yet they made no effort trying to cover up their disgusting act. The man I had figured to be Mr. Lancaster looked right into my eyes and continued his business like it was a normal routine, I closed the door immediately and remained frozen in my steps, trying to figure out what I had just witnessed.
