~Nancy POV~
I had no choice but to nod, and in an instant, he gently held my waist, guiding me onto the dance floor. I didn’t know how it happened, but I found myself instinctively wrapping my hands around his neck.
The faint, comforting scent of vanilla from his cologne filled my senses, and I closed my eyes, losing myself in the moment. Around us, music played, one of Ed Sheeran’s songs, though I didn’t even recognize it at the time.
For what felt like ten minutes, we moved together, perfectly in sync, until his voice broke through my daze.
“You look beautiful.”
My heart lurched, racing faster than I had ever known. Compliments like that were unfamiliar to me. I wasn’t a romantic person, but somehow, without thinking, I whispered, “Thank you.”
When I opened my eyes, he was staring at me with a look I couldn’t describe. It wasn’t just attraction, it was something deeper, something that made my chest tighten. I had always thought people who said you could fall in love at first sight were exaggerating. But here I was, caught in exactly that impossible, thrilling feeling.
“I’m Will,” he said, and suddenly I was jolted back into the present.
“Whaaat?” I stammered, caught off guard.
“I said, I’m Will,” he repeated, his voice calm yet confident.
“Okay,” I managed, feeling slightly flustered.
“Yours, please,” he said softly, almost teasingly.
“I’m Nancy,” I whispered back.
“Nancy… what a sweet name,” he said flirtatiously, and I couldn’t help but smile.
After a few moments, he suggested we step outside the club for a quieter spot. With no school or work tomorrow, Friday being a free day, we had plenty of time to talk. In the soft night air, I learned more about him: Martin Williams, 23, the only child of his parents, who had missed three years of high school due to a complicated illness he had fought and overcome.
For the next two hours, we talked, laughed, and shared pieces of our lives. I was surprised at how easily I could open up to him, despite being new here and barely knowing the city.
Finally, reality crept back in. I needed to return to the school apartments and meet my colleagues, I wasn’t familiar with the place yet.
“I need to go,” I said softly.
“A bit longer, Nancy,” he murmured, his husky voice soft and pleading, impossible to resist.
“I’m new here,” I whispered, unsure why the words escaped me so quietly.
“I’ll drive you home,” he offered.
I hesitated for only a moment before giving in. There was no reason to rush back to my empty apartment, and besides… the night had been far too enchanting to end just yet. Will’s eyes lit up at my agreement, and he proposed one final dance before driving me back.
As we returned to the music, I realized that this night, unexpected, thrilling, and utterly bewildering, was far from over.
