Chapter one
Harper’s Pov, I woke up to the sound of my phone alarm ringing loudly in my ears. I groaned and reached over to turn it off, but as I did, I caught a glimpse of the notification on the screen. It was a message from my best friend, Emily. “Hey, can we talk after school today?” it read. I frowned, wondering what she could possibly want to talk about. Emily and I had been best friends since we were kids, and we’d never had any serious problems before. But something about the tone of her message made me uneasy. I got up and got ready for school, feeling a sense of dread in the pit of my stomach. As I walked to the bus stop, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to go wrong. When I got to school, I immediately went to find Emily. She was standing in the hallway with a group of girls I didn’t recognize. As soon as she saw me, she walked over. “Hey, Harper,” she said, giving me a weak smile. “What’s going on?” I asked, looking at the other girls suspiciously. Emily hesitated, then took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Harper. I can’t be your friend anymore.” I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. “What? Why?” I asked, feeling a lump form in my throat. “It’s just…I can’t explain it,” Emily said, looking away. The other girls snickered, and I realized they were the popular girls from our grade. They were all staring at me with smug expressions on their faces. I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment and anger. “What’s going on here?” I demanded, looking at Emily for answers. But she just shook her head and turned away. I felt a pang of hurt and betrayal, wondering how my best friend could just abandon me like this. As the day went on, I realized that things were much worse than I had imagined. The other students in our grade were treating me like I was some kind of outcast. They whispered behind my back, snickered when I walked by, and even went out of their way to bump into me in the hallways. I tried to ignore it and just focus on my classes, but it was hard. Every time I looked up, I felt like I was being judged. At lunchtime, I sat alone at a table, trying to eat my sandwich without choking on my tears. I could feel the other students staring at me from across the cafeteria, and it made my skin crawl. “Hey, Harper,” a voice said from behind me. I turned around to see my neighbor, Mrs. Thompson, standing there with a sympathetic look on her face. “Are you okay?” she asked. I shook my head, feeling a fresh wave of tears welling up in my eyes. “No, I’m not okay. My best friend just ditched me for the popular crowd, and now everyone is treating me like I’m some kind of freak.” Mrs. Thompson put a comforting hand on my shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Harper. That’s really tough. But don’t worry, things will get better. You’re a strong girl, and you’ll get through this.” I nodded, feeling grateful for her kind words. “Thanks, Mrs. Thompson. I hope you’re right.” The rest of the day dragged on, and by the time the final bell rang, I was exhausted. I trudged out to the bus stop, feeling like a weight was crushing me from all sides. I took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions inside me. I knew that I couldn’t let these girls get to me, but it was easier said than done. I started to feel a wave of anxiety rising in my chest, and I took another deep breath to try and push it down. But then, something unexpected happened. A voice cut through the air, loud and clear, breaking the tension in the hallway. “Hey! What do you think you’re doing?” I turned to see who had spoken, and was surprised to see a tall girl with short, spiky hair and a fierce expression on her face. She was standing a few feet away, with her arms crossed over her chest. The girls who had been taunting me turned to face her, their expressions shifting from smug to surprised. “Mind your own business, Chloe,” one of them spat. Chloe didn’t flinch. “This is my business. You’re bullying my friend, and I won’t stand for it.” I felt a pang of gratitude toward Chloe. We had been friends since elementary school, but had drifted apart in recent years. I had always admired her bravery and her no-nonsense attitude, and it seemed that she was still the same person I had known all those years ago. The girls glared at her, but seemed to lose their nerve. Without another word, they turned and walked away, their heads held high. Chloe turned to me, a small smile on her lips. “Are you okay, Harper?” I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. “Thank you, Chloe. I don’t know what I would have done without you.” Chloe shrugged. “That’s what friends are for, right? Come on, let’s get to class.” We started walking down the hallway, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. Maybe things weren’t so bad after all. As we walked into our English class, I scanned the room for a seat. There were only a few left, and they were all taken by kids I didn’t know very well. I spotted an empty desk in the back of the room, next to a boy with shaggy brown hair and a nose ring. He was staring down at his notebook, scribbling furiously. I hesitated for a moment, but then decided to take the seat. As I sat down, the boy looked up and gave me a small smile. “Hey,” he said. “Hey,” I replied, feeling a bit nervous. “I’m Max,” he said, extending his hand. “I’m Harper,” I said, shaking his hand. We fell into an easy conversation, talking about our favorite books and movies. I was surprised by how quickly I felt at ease around him. For the first time that day, I felt like maybe things were starting to look up. As class ended, Max turned to me. “Do you want to sit with me at lunch today?” I felt a flutter of excitement in my chest. “Sure,” I said, smiling. As I walked out of the classroom with Max, I couldn’t help but feel like maybe this was the start of something new.
