The New Teacher
The morning air still smelled like rain. Lena Rivera sat in the back of the classroom, twirling her pen, half-watching the droplets slide down the window. Senior year felt like déjà vu—same faces, same walls, same suffocating small-town rhythm. But today wasn’t the same. Mrs. Carter’s classroom door opened, and silence spread like spilled ink. A man walked in. He wasn’t in a suit like most teachers. A dark shirt, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Sharp jawline. Storm-colored eyes that held too much history for a small-town school. He set his briefcase on the desk, calm, deliberate. Dangerously composed. “Good morning,” he said, voice low, smooth, steady. “I’m Mr. Steele. I’ll be filling in for Mrs. Carter for the next few months.” Lena’s heart stuttered. Mr. Steele. That name echoed in her chest like a secret. Because she’d met him before—only not as Mr. Steele. A summer night. A bookstore that stayed open too late. A stranger who quoted poetry when she told him she didn’t believe in love stories anymore. And a kiss she hadn’t been able to forget. He looked older now, maybe more guarded, but it was him. It had to be. Lena sat perfectly still, afraid her heartbeat might give her away. He started writing on the board, his handwriting slanted and confident: “Literature is the mirror of our hidden selves.” His gaze swept across the room. It landed on her for half a second too long—just enough for the air to shift. Recognition flickered in his eyes. Then he looked away. Her pulse jumped. He remembered. --- When the bell rang, the other students rushed out. Lena lingered, pretending to pack slowly. She needed to know if he’d say something—anything. But he just leaned over his desk, flipping through attendance sheets. “Miss Rivera?” His voice stopped her mid-step. “Yes?” He didn’t look up right away. “You’re staying after for the school paper, right? Mrs. Carter noted you’re the editor.” “Yeah.” She exhaled, masking her nerves. “That’s me.” Finally, he lifted his head. His eyes met hers. Calm. Careful. But beneath that—an unspoken warning. “Good. Then I’ll see you tomorrow after class,” he said. “Try not to be late.” Lena nodded, but her throat was tight. When she turned to leave, his voice followed her softly. “Lena…” Her name in his mouth sounded dangerous. She turned. He hesitated, then said, quieter, “Don’t stay behind alone next time.” Her breath caught. “Why not?” His jaw clenched, a shadow crossing his face. “Because some lessons are better learned from a distance.” --- That night, Lena couldn’t sleep. She replayed his words over and over—the warning, the restraint in his voice. He remembered her. He wanted to forget. But how do you unlearn a connection that already feels like sin?
