BENSON Dad walked up to the dining table to join Mom and me for breakfast. Once I finished breakfast with my parents, I stood up to leave the mansion. “Dad, Mom, I’m leaving for the office,” I told them. They smiled. “All right, Benson. You can go,” Dad dismissed me as he sat at the dining chair. I picked up my briefcase and stepped out into the beautiful surroundings. My Beta, Dennis Richard, arrived and bowed to me. “Good morning, Alpha,” Dennis greeted. He wore a white shirt and black trousers. He was a dark-skinned man, twenty-four years old, and scented like cedarwood. “Morning. Have you warmed up the car like I asked you to do last week?” I asked, as I walked with him toward my car. “Yes, Alpha. I did, and the cars are ready,” Dennis replied as we approached them. “Well, I’ll be going to the pack hospital first to see the sick werewolves. How about the training camp and the pack’s school? Have you visited them to see how my father is helping out?” I asked. Dennis stood at my height. “No, Alpha. I’ve been busy with the company and tax collection in our pack. The last tax collector, David Paulo, absconded with the money generated. We’re searching for him and found out he left the pack with his family and went to the human city farther away from us,” Dennis relayed as we stood beside my car. “David cannot abscond for long or stay away from the other packs. Werewolves and humans cannot live together for long without them finding out. Find him and bring him back. Send his information to the other packs’ Betas so they can keep watch for him,” I ordered. I took my car key from Dennis and opened the door of my black Mercedes-Benz GLC. We were rich and lived a high standard of life. We had our own pack school, university, and markets. “All right, Alpha. I wanted to leave for the hospital because I got reports that some injured werewolves were found outside pack territory. They’re being treated at the pack hospital, and I haven’t confirmed yet if they’re awake enough to be brought to your office,” Dennis said, once I sat in the car, shut the car door and looked at him. “How many were there?” I asked, frowning as I recalled a scentless girl that I had saved. “About four of them,” Dannis replied. I sighed. “I’ll head to the hospital now, so you don’t have to worry about going there. But make sure you get to the market and find a replacement for the old tax collector. Order the gatekeeper to unlock the gate,” I told him. Dennis bowed and walked away from my car. I roared the engine to life and drove out of the palace, heading for the pack hospital first. I kept my eyes fixed on the road as I drove toward the hospital. When I arrived, I drove onto the hospital grounds and parked my car. I turned off the ignition and got out, still dressed in a brown shirt, black trousers, and polished black shoes. I left my briefcase in the car and walked up to the magnificent hospital entrance. Though we hardly had sick patients in our pack, I wanted to see the pack doctor for a DNA test for my daughter, Celine Banks. It wasn’t something I wanted made public yet, but I desired the DNA test so I would stop looking at Celine as if she weren’t my child. I still perceived her as mine. She carried an oriental scent of frankincense, yet she resembled Emma. She even had orange eyes and long red hair like my mother. “Welcome, Alpha,” Dr. Chris, the pack’s new doctor, greeted me as I entered the hospital lobby. I was sure he had perceived my scent. I carried a strong earthy scent and usually secreted more pheromones to show dominance wherever I went. However, I caught a delicious scent hovering around Dr. Chris’s shirt. My black eyes narrowed. I didn’t want to think about it. Not now. But the scent of jasmine was so welcoming that my wolf, Odin, wanted to take charge and find the source of that sweet, delicious aroma. “Alpha, is everything all right?” Dr. Chris asked, noticing me sweating. I was secreting even more Alpha pheromones, forcing everyone in the lobby to bow and submit their heads to me. I was their new Alpha, and they always showed me respect. This time my Alpha aura was taking over, driven by my wolf, Odin. He had been hurt and had shut me out ever since Emma and her wolf, Agnes, cheated on him. “Yes. I’m fine. But what do you smell of jasmine—and like a woman?” I asked Dr. Chris. His yellow eyes widened in shock. “Oh, forgive me, Alpha. I was doing ward rounds with some of the stubborn new foreigners who haven’t been introduced to you yet. One of them must have filled me with her intoxicating scent. I found out she was on a scent suppressant, so I took it off. That’s why I have her scent all over me,” Dr. Chris explained. My wolf grew curious and wanted to go see the new foreigner who carried that delicious scent. But I shut him down. Odin couldn’t be interested in a foreigner. As much as I would have loved to see the woman with that relaxing, inviting scent, I still needed to follow pack protocol and make sure she wasn’t an enemy sent to destroy my pack. “That’s fine. I’m not here to check on the foreigner yet. I have something important to discuss with you. Follow me,” I told Dr. Chris. His father had been the former pack doctor but was now retired. “Okay, Alpha.” Dr. Chris led me to his office on the first floor of the magnificent two-story building. Odin charged within me and growled in my head, “Come on, Benson. We need to go see her first.” “No. Not this time, Odin. Pack rules are to be adhered to,” I told him and pushed him to the back of my mind. He kept fighting, trying to make me drop everything and go find the new mate. “No!” I shut my wolf out completely and focused on Dr. Chris, who looked at me worriedly. “I’m fine,” I told Dr. Chris as we entered his office. We settled across from each other, and I told him why I was there.
