August
I grew up in the small town of Abbot Harbor Maine, a town of 500. I was a small-town girl living a normal small-town life. Everyone knows everyone and their business. I lived in a two-story split-level house with my brother, sister, mom, and dad. I had a normal childhood except for I was a little smarter well maybe a lot smarter. I was skipped ahead 3 grades; I was 14. It was August, I was enjoying life. I was going to grade 12 in September and already had Harvard banging on the door with a full scholarship. See my parents were fishers so our life revolved around the water. They could not afford to send me to college, but Harvard was my ticket out of Abbot Harbor Maine. I loved my small town, but I knew I was bound for something greater. I was a Five-foot five firecracker. Long blonde curly hair. I may be only fourteen, but I was already well-developed. I had a perfect hourglass figure. I was already a D cup. Plus, I had nice hips almost a little too big. But I liked my curves. I didn’t want to be like my sister. She wasn’t short but she was a brown-haired stick. Model thin. She was a female version of my brother Bruce. Well, Bruce's arms were big from hauling pots and nets, but he was tall and skinny. Dark hair and dark eyes. One day I was out hanging in front of the Whistles; there weren’t a lot of kids, but we all hung out there. I was there with Jenny, Nina and Janelle. We were best friends. Jenny was 17, Nina was 16, and Janelle was 15. As I said, small town. We were inseparable. We had been hanging around since we were kids. Well, that was until August 5th. August 5th: a usual day we were hanging out in front of Whistle’s when my sister Jeanne came to get me and said. “We need to go home right away.” I was worried as it was fishing season. Mom and Dad were fishing on a 55-footer and I was afraid something had happened. We pulled into the driveway and there was a huge limo. I looked at Jeanne as we got out of the car. She could drive, she was 21 and I asked what was going on. She said, “You will find out when we went in the house.” We went inside and there were Morgan Tracy, Allan Tracy and Hope Tracy. I knew who they were because I was a huge wrestling fan. They ran the northern territory, and they were the royal family of wrestling. I thought I had won some contest that I had entered or something. Mom asked Jeanne and Bruce to take me upstairs, Bruce was my older brother he was 19. He came in off the boat with Mom and Dad. We were upstairs just having small talk and I could hear my mom yell. “You are not taking my girl from me!” I looked a Jeanne and Bruce and asked. “What in the world is going on?” I went downstairs, Jeanne and Bruce followed. I saw my mom crying and my Dad was enraged. I looked at my mother and asked what was going on. All my mother could do was cry. She ran over and hugged me saying “I am never letting go.” “Ok someone needs to tell me what’s going on?” I was perplexed and starting to get annoyed. Mom told me to sit down as she and Dad had something to tell me. I sat down on the couch between my mom and Dad. My Mom could barely speak until Morgan Tracy was about to speak and my mom snapped at him. “She’s my daughter I will tell her. You sit down.”Mom snapped at him, then turned to me. “Baby girl we have something to tell you; we would have told you at some point, but we have to tell you now.” She was trying to get her breath and wiping her tears. “See your father and I were on the docks one day offloading the boat. We were a young couple, and a woman was staying at Mr. Weymouth’s place; renting it out while he was in Portland. She had two boys and was pregnant, we started talking to the lady as you know it would be unchristian not to talk to the lady. She told us she and her 2 boys were going to be staying there for a while. We asked was her husband there with her. She told us how the baby’s father had died, and she was on her own. Well, you know we helped her out the best we could she would come for supper her boys were 10 and 8. Hope would look out to Jeanne and Bruce while we were out on the boat. Then one night Chris her oldest boy ran to the house out of breath; got Myself and Jim. He said Mrs. Ellie, Mr. Jim Mom needs help, Chris stayed with the kids; Myself and Jim ran up to Mr. Weymouth’s house. Hope was in labor. The Doctor was in the next town; Jim went to call him, but the baby was coming there was no time to wait. I knew I had to deliver this baby, Jim boiled the water and got some towels, Kel woke up and Jim sent him down to our house. A half-hour later a beautiful baby girl was born. I cleaned her up and cut the cord, it was a healthy baby girl I could tell she was a fighter. I went to put her in Hope’s arms, and she would not take her. I asked, “What’s wrong?” She said “If I hold her, I won’t be able to give her up” I was puzzled about how and what was going on, she never said anything about giving the baby up in the 6 months I knew her. The Doctor came to the house before he got there, she begged Jim and I to say it was ours. “But Hope Doctor Malone knows I’m not pregnant,” Ellie said “Please no one knows I’m pregnant Michael died I can’t do it without him. My family can’t find out I have a baby. His baby.” Hope pleaded I looked at your father and said, “What do we do?” Your Dad said “I have enough love for another child. Do you?” Hope said. “Please Ellie you’re the only one I can trust.” Dr. Malone walked in and looked at the baby checked and saw that everything was ok; he had a birth certificate with him. What time was she Born Ellie? Dr. Malone asked 3:40 in the morning. Ellie said back “Name?” Dr. Malone asked “Jessica Michaela” Ellie said “Last name?” Doc said Ellie said “Davis” Doc Malone looked up puzzled “Davis Ellie this isn’t your baby.” Hope started pleading with Dr. Malone to put Jim and Ellie’s names on the birth certificate “No one can know I had another child please Doctor, I will make it worth your while. Hope reached down and grabbed a duffle bag and pulled out a 10,000-dollar bundle and said. “Please Doc please.” Doc Malone looked at the 10,000 dollars took it; wrote James and Ellie Davis as the birth parents on the birth certificate. He walked away and said I’ll check on her in a week. “He walked out the door we cleaned up the place. Hope slept, and Jim went to the house to get the kids ready for school. It was a cold November day, and there was no fishing in the winter. I stayed with the baby and Hope. Hope woke up, started packing her and the kid’s bags. She reached in that duffle bag and grabbed 3 wads of cash it was 30,000 dollars.” “What’s that for?” Ellie asked “It’s not much but it will help you raise Jessica.” Hope said “I’m packing up the boy's stuff; we’ll be out of town after they get out of school. You better call Jim he’ll need that money to go to town and get a crib for little Jess.” “You are not strong enough to travel with 2 boys you just had a baby,” Ellie said. “I need one more favor I need a ride to Bangor; I’m getting a flight back to Boston,” Hope said. The boys came home from school Jim packed up the car; brought Hope, Chris and Kelvin to Bangor and that was the last I had seen of Hope Tracy. Wow, that’s a lot to take in I was confused, angry, sad, frustrated, upset and just a mix of emotions. So how was I supposed to react I don’t know. Finding out I was adopted well not even really adopted, just dropped in someone’s lap but yet two people willing to raise someone else’s child. I look over and I see Hope smiling at me. I look over at My Mom and said. “So why are they here?” “She wants you back now?” Ellie said. “So, she dumps me on you and just expects to pick me up when she feels like it?” I said “It appears that way,” Jim said in a very low tone. I knew when Dad spoke like that he was ready to explode. I looked at the three of them “Are you on glue? You dumped me like trash and I’m supposed to what go pack my bags and get in the car? Are you insane?” I snapped at them. My Dad came and hugged me. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to sweetheart.” He assured me. “I have a court order that says that she does.” Morgan chimed in. “And I’m supposed to listen to you whom I have known for 5 minutes. You are not my family this is my family.” I said spitting nails. “If we would have known about you, you would not have been here.” Said Morgan with a scowl on his face. Hope is crying in the chair. “What right do you have to cry you begged these two people to take me because you didn’t want to face your problems and now what you’re over it. Go to hell.” I snapped. “Watch your mouth, young lady.” Ellie said “Just because you don’t like what they say there’s no need to be rude. I raised you better than that.” “But Mom?” I said “No buts,” Ellie said Hope broke down “You are right I have no right to come back here after 14 years and demand you back, but Jessica I’m dying and I want to spend my dying days with my daughter in my life.” She said sobbing. “Look I can call the police and they will make you give here to us,” Morgan said “What do you think I am a piece of property or something, I am a human and as per the state of Maine after 12 years old a child can choose who they live with and you have no legal claim since my birth certificate says parents Ellie and James Davis. Not Tracy.” “Your pretty smart young lady but Hope was under duress when she gave you up and was not thinking clearly,” said Morgan “I will run long and hard before I go to Boston with you three of you and none of you will see me again,” I claimed “Don’t do that I left you once I can’t lose you again.” Hope said “Dad, Allan let's leave” “Not without my Granddaughter” Morgan shouted. “I am not your granddaughter” I shouted back. I saw the look on Hope's face then I suggested to her. “Why don’t you move here for a little while then you can get to know me.” Hope said. “I’d like that, but I can’t; I have to have my cancer treatments. But I could stay for a couple of weeks.” “Ok, then it’s settled,” I said Morgan went to say something, but Hope cut him off they rented a house for a couple of weeks and I spent some time every day with Hope and Morgan. Allan went back to Boston to run the business. I had no intention of going to Boston but that’s when Morgan played dirty. I went home for Hope’s one day and the sheriff’s car was in the driveway; my parents were being arrested for a bogus drug smuggling charge. I knew this smelled of Morgan. I looked at my mother and said, “I’ll fix this I promise.” I ran to the house that Hope and Morgan were renting furious I slapped Morgan. “It was you, wasn’t it?” I was irate “What was me?” Morgan said with a smirk “You planted drugs on my parent’s boat did you?” I screamed “What?” Hope questioned in shock. “What did you expect I had to do something? You think I would let someone else raise my grandchild?” Morgan said. “I will get emancipated, so I still won’t be with you,” I screamed “What if I make it all go away; you come live with us in Boston and I will make sure all the charges go away,” Morgan stated “You’re a bastard!” I started “Yes, but I’m a rich and powerful Bastard” Morgan chuckled. “I live with you and I still get to come here regularly I mean like once a month,” I said “Done,” Morgan said. “It’s done when you fix this.” I snapped I left and walked home it was a five-minute walk and by the time I got home the cops were gone according to Daddy it was a misunderstanding. I looked at them and said, “It was no misunderstanding.” “What do you mean it was no misunderstanding?” Jim said “No, it was Morgan Tracy. I told you I’d fix it but it cost me.” I said “How did it cost you?” Ellie said. “I have to go pack my bags and head to Boston. Morgan set this whole thing up to blackmail me to go to Boston. I’m not going to watch you go to jail because of me.” I exclaimed. “I’ll kill him,” Jim said. “No you’re not Dad I’ll be back one weekend a month and holidays or you will be in jail and that’s what I'm trying to prevent,” I remarked. Ellie came up and sat with me. I cried the whole time, and so did my mom. “Mom please don’t cry I can take care of myself. I’ll be ok you have taught me well and I will call every day. I calmly said trying to make it okay for her. “I can’t believe we are losing you, my baby girl.” She cried she held me tight. She pulled back and then held my face. “I may not have given birth to you but you are now and always my baby girl.” She said as she pulled me back into her. My mom was a short lady around 5’2 I had a few inches on her my head well over her shoulder. My Dad came up the stairs he was about 6’2 250 pounds a big solid man. “ I love you, my baby girl. He wrapped his arms around us. He said as tears came streaming down his face. My parents walked with me downstairs through the attached garage to the black limo that was waiting for me outside the house. I gave them one last hug, “I love you and I’ll be back soon.” I cried not able to hold back the tears got in the car and drove off, sobbing the whole way to Boston.
