CHAPTER 1 "The boy with the Umbrella"
# Chapter 1: The Boy with the Umbrella
The rain had been falling since early morning, turning the university campus into a sea of glistening sidewalks and puddles. Students hurried from one building to another, holding colourful umbrellas above their heads while others ran through the rain with notebooks covering their faces.
Amid the crowd walked **Alyssa Reyes**, a first-year college student who had already learned one important lesson about university life: never trust the weather forecast.
She sighed as she looked at the dark clouds above.
"I forgot my umbrella again," she mumbled to herself.
It had been a long day. Three lectures, one surprise quiz, and a group activity had drained every bit of energy she had. All she wanted was to go home, curl up with a cup of hot chocolate, and sleep until morning.
Instead, she stood beneath the roof outside the Arts Building, watching the rain pour harder with every passing minute.
Her phone buzzed.
It was a message from her mother.
**Mom:** *The rain is getting stronger. Stay somewhere safe until it slows down.*
Alyssa smiled.
**Alyssa:** *Don't worry, Mom. I'll wait.*
She slipped her phone into her bag and looked around.
Dozens of students slowly disappeared through the gates until only a handful remained. Some had umbrellas. Others had rides waiting outside.
She had neither.
"Looks like I'm stuck here," she whispered.
"Unless..."
A calm voice interrupted her thoughts.
"You don't mind sharing an umbrella, do you?"
She turned around.
Standing behind her was a tall young man wearing a navy-blue hoodie and carrying a black umbrella. His dark hair was slightly messy, and despite the gloomy weather, he wore a warm, gentle smile.
"I've seen you in Professor Santos' Literature class," he said.
Alyssa blinked.
"You have?"
He chuckled.
"You sit near the window."
She laughed softly.
"And you?"
"I sit at the back."
"Oh..."
Now she remembered him.
The quiet student who always arrived early and spent his free time sketching in a notebook.
"I'm Luke," he said, offering his hand.
"Alyssa."
Their handshake lasted only a second, but somehow it felt like the beginning of something neither of them could explain.
"So..." Luke smiled.
"Still planning to wait until tomorrow?"
She laughed.
"It might actually rain until then."
"Exactly."
He lifted the umbrella.
"My bus stop is near yours."
"You know where I live?"
He quickly shook his head.
"No! I mean... I noticed you always ride Bus Seven."
Alyssa burst into laughter.
"You've been observing me?"
His ears turned red.
"That sounded creepy."
"It did."
"I'm sorry."
She smiled.
"But somehow... I don't think you're creepy."
For the first time that day, Luke laughed loudly.
"Good."
They stepped beneath the umbrella together.
The space was small.
Every now and then, their shoulders accidentally brushed against each other.
Neither of them moved away.
The rain continued to fall around them, creating a peaceful rhythm that somehow made the silence feel comfortable instead of awkward.
"So..." Luke asked.
"How are you finding college?"
"It's exhausting."
"Same."
"I thought college students had everything figured out."
Luke laughed.
"I barely know what I'm doing half the time."
Alyssa smiled.
"I'm glad it's not just me."
As they walked through the campus gates, their conversation became easier.
They talked about their favourite films.
Luke loved romantic classics and animated movies.
Alyssa preferred mystery novels and comedy films.
They discovered they both loved coffee, late-night music playlists, and watching sunsets.
By the time they reached the bus stop, neither of them realised nearly forty minutes had passed.
"You're easy to talk to," Luke admitted.
"You too."
The bus arrived.
It was crowded.
Only two seats remained at the back.
They sat together.
Outside the window, raindrops raced down the glass while the city lights blurred into colourful streaks.
Luke opened his sketchbook.
"You draw?" Alyssa asked.
"A little."
He turned the notebook towards her.
Inside were beautiful pencil sketches of people, trees, old buildings, and smiling strangers.
"They're amazing."
Luke scratched the back of his neck.
"Thanks."
"I've never shown them to anyone."
"You showed them to me."
"I don't know why."
Alyssa smiled.
"Maybe because we're friends now."
Luke looked at her for a moment before smiling back.
"I'd like that."
The bus stopped near Alyssa's neighbourhood.
"This is my stop."
Luke stood up too.
"So is mine."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Really?"
He pointed across the street.
"I live three blocks away."
"What?"
"I guess we're neighbours."
They both laughed.
"What are the chances?" Alyssa asked.
"The universe must like surprising people."
As they walked through the neighbourhood, the rain finally began to slow.
The cool breeze carried the scent of wet grass and fresh earth.
For the first time in weeks, Alyssa felt completely relaxed.
When they reached her gate, she turned to him.
"Thanks for sharing your umbrella."
"Anytime."
"I owe you one."
Luke smiled.
"You don't owe me anything."
"Then..."
She hesitated.
"Would you like to grab coffee sometime?"
Luke looked pleasantly surprised.
"I was actually hoping you'd ask."
They exchanged phone numbers before saying goodbye.
As Alyssa entered her house, her mother noticed the smile on her face.
"You look happier than when you left this morning."
"I met someone."
Her mother's eyebrows rose.
"A boy?"
"A new friend."
She went to her room, placed her bag on the bed, and looked out the window.
Across the street, she spotted Luke walking towards his house.
As if sensing her gaze, he looked up.
They smiled and waved at each other.
Neither of them knew that a simple act of kindness on a rainy afternoon would become the beginning of a friendship that would change both of their lives forever.
Years from now, they would look back on this day with grateful hearts.
Not because it was extraordinary.
But because it was the day two strangers met beneath one umbrella—and unknowingly began writing the greatest love story of their lives.
