Chapter 2(Turn In Between)
Elissa's heart raced as she stood before the council of elders of Cape Town Park, In a serene clearing cave within an ancient forest, where the council of elders had convened to hear the case. Her legs got weary as the weight of their accusing eyes and contemptuous snare dropped heavily upon her. She glanced around as the moonlight filtered through the canopy above, casting eerie shadows across the clearing. She searched for just one set of eyes that had trust in it. A circle of weathered stones marked the sacred gathering place, and the air was filled with the faint rustling of leaves and the distant calls of forest creatures. And the elders sat on an antique carved wooden chair, their judging eyes boring into her like an x-ray. "How could they think I would kill the one man I love so much." she thought beneath her breath. Her wolf, a high-spirited one, seemed dulled and crushed in the pale light. To her side stood a figure that added an unexpected layer of tension to the atmosphere. It was Lamar, a wolf whom the dead alpha had gone into a truce with but had deceitfully chosen that chance to murder him in cold bold. And now he stood accusing Elissa of the unthinkable – of killing her mate. His presence fueled the unease in the room, his unwavering gaze fixed on the council as he spat out his lies to the council. The eldest of the council, a wise and stern wolf with fur as dark as the night, spoke in a voice that resonated with authority. "Luna, daughter of our pack, you are accused of murdering the Alpha – your mate. What do you have to say in your defense?" Elissa's voice trembled, breaking off as she spoke, her eyes locked on Lamar's accusing gaze. "I loved him with all my heart. I would never harm him." "That's not true, I saw how everything played out. The poor alpha." Lamar interrupted his voice firm and his expression etched with a feigned compassion for Zophos, the dead alpha. "That's not true! I would never…" "Can you keep quiet and allow the young man to speak?" the oldest female elder in the council ordered, "or have you lost your manners and respect towards us too?" Lamar turned slightly to face Elissa before gazing back at the elders, his lips curled into a cold smile and his eyes glinting with evil. "She lies," he continued, his voice dripping with venom. "I saw her near the scene of the murder that night, her fangs stained with his blood. Before then, I heard them arguing about her infidelity. The alpha wanted to report her to the council but she didn't like the idea so she killed him in the struggle." Murmurs spread through the council, doubt, and suspicion clouding their judgment. The council's attention shifted between Elissa and Lamar, torn between the loyalty they felt for both individuals and the fear they also felt for Lamar. The elder with dark fur raised a brow, his voice heavy with concern. "Lamar, are you certain of what you saw?" Lamar nodded firmly, his gaze never leaving the elder. "I am." With a heavy heart, the council reached their verdict. "Luna, daughter of the pack, until the truth is revealed, you shall be confined within the ancient hollow cave cell under the guard's watchful gaze. We shall deliberate on your fate." As Luna was led away, Lamar's triumphant smile followed her, and she was left alone within the cell. "Why don't you all believe me? I can't possibly do what I am being accused of, I loved the alpha." Elissa yelled out, holding onto the bars in frustration. With no success, Elissa sank to the floor exhausted, and her gloom deepened. She stared at the moon rays that found their way into the room through a tiny window on the wall, her thoughts consumed by memories of her husband, the Alpha, and the life they had shared. Their first meeting, the way he had looked at her with those soulful eyes, marked the beginning of a love that was meant to transcend all challenges. She touched her lips as she recalled the warmth of his lips on hers and the warmth of his strong protective embrace. But now, those memories were tainted, forever marred. In a few minutes, as Luna sat lost in thought, a haunting figure appeared before her cell. It was Lamar, his gaze cold and calculating. "Luna, Luna, Luna." he began, his voice dripping with twisted charm, "I hold the key to your freedom. Marry me, and I shall tell the council that I was mistaken – that you are innocent. That we later found the real culprit." Elissa's eyes narrowed as she sprung to her feet, a blend of anger and disbelief welling up within her. "You murdered him," she hissed. "You framed me, and now you seek to manipulate me further? You can't be serious." Elissa ran her hands through her ginger-colored hair as the world around her seemed to blur as rage clouded her vision, her mind struggling to process the words of the man who had not only killed her husband but had burnt his lifeless body as if it was just a piece of wood. Defenseless, her heart pounded and hate surged through her. The scent of Lamar's familiarity mixed with the stench of betrayal, created a nauseating concoction that assaulted her senses. Lamar leaned in with an evil smile, and passing his fingers through the bar, he brushed my lips, a murderous show of affection. Lamar enjoyed the whole scene his evil mind had put together as he sought to claim me in my moment of vulnerability, to assert dominance over me just as they had over Zophos and almost everyone in the park. Elissa stepped back in irritation, anguish and anger collided within her, a whirlwind of emotions that threatened to consume her sanity. Lamar's smile remained chillingly confident. "I am serious, I'm making you a lifetime offer. Think wisely, Luna. Marrying me is your only way out of this cell. The choice is yours." "And my daughter? You wanted to marry her, didn't you?" Elissa questioned, her voice laced with disdain. "I choose whoever I want," Lamar replied with a frown. Turning to leave, he stopped on his track and chortled, "I know you will make the best decision. You sure do not want to rot in here." "Why don't you just kill me, the way you cold-heartedly killed the alpha." Elissa sneered at him, "Because I will never be yours. Never!" With Elissa's words, Lamar whirled around and came face to face with Elissa's defenseless eyes. "Oh! You know I wouldn't have hesitated if I wanted to do so a long time ago. But, you, my dear, are my victory cup from the tournament." Lamar paused, touching his jaw as if he recalled something, and then continued with an evil grin, "I am going to feed on you every night and every morning, I want to have you. I would satisfy myself with the spring in between those we'll curve hips of yours. You wouldn't kill or discard such treasure if you were the one, would you?" Numbed, Elissa uttered no words, she knew deep down there was no way for her. Everyone and probably half the council elders were afraid of Lamar. They knew what he was capable of. With the last ounce of strength, Elissa barked before slumping to the floor again."I will never marry you!" Her heart wrecked as Lamar's words echoed in her mind. Torn between the heaviness of the option that seemed to promise freedom and the knowledge that it was offered by the very hand that had shattered her world and the option of facing the judgment of the council, she allowed the tears that had welled up inside of her to roll down. "We will see about that, my dear Luna. Till then, enjoy the confinement of your new home." Lamar yelled, just before he turned and walked toward the exit. As Lamar's presence retreated, the echoes from the sound of his shoe on the concrete floor began to fade. Luna was left alone once again. The moon's gentle glow continued to illuminate her confinement, casting shadows that mirrored the uncertainty that now clouded her heart. I can't marry him. I would not. There has to be another way out. Elissa soliloquized as she stared at the moon. "If I only had one witness." Knowing her life had changed in just a few minutes, she closed her eyes and uttered a few words to the moon's goodness as she glanced at the moon. "You have to do something. I can't marry Lamar. I can't bear to live my life with the murderer of my husband for the rest of my life. The echoes of her own words bounced back to her in the emptiness of the cave, as she sobbed, thoughts of her survival and that of her daughter, Venitta ran through her mind.
