I was dangerous. I couldn’t keep my temper under control no mater what form I was in. My family worried that I would be alone. I was relived. I couldn’t Imagine reliving the hell of the last 10 years. I live in solitude. I only surface if i’m needed to make a ruling or if I need to let Lucien run free. I can only keep him contained so long before I become more of a danger to everyone. Lucien is the reason for my solitude the reason for my pain. Lucien killed Elaina. Elaina was supposed to be my wife. “Brother?” My sisters small voice interrupting my thoughts from the other side of my door. I knew why she was here and I didn’t want it but I couldn’t say no to my little sister. “Come in Lyra” I sigh. She pushed the door open slowly. “I was just thinking about you” She sits cross legged in the chair. “I was remembering Elaina” She folded her hands in her lap. Today was the anniversary of Elaina’s death. I was taking it better than most years. Lyra didn’t speak to me much anymore. It was my own doing but for her own good. This day every year she comes to my room to remember Elaina. “Your birthday is coming up” She shrugs her shoulders changing the subject. “Yes…” I reply. “Well, It’s a big one and I think we should have a party” She crosses her arms finally making eye contact with me. I laugh. I laugh probably for the first time in ten years. “Why would I do that?” I lean my elbows on my knees and rest my chin to my folded hands. “I don’t know” she looks down again “You need to come back to life” She sighs “I need you to be you again” My stomach folded. Lyra was only ten when my world changed, Our world changed. I use to be the doting brother and Elaina was so good with Lyra. She had tea partys, played dress up and even had sleepovers in Lyra’s room. I lost the love of my life but my sister lost her brother and a friend. It was always hard for me to say no to Lyra. My other siblings knew my weakness when it came to her. I wondered if they had anything to do with this sudden ploy to have a party in my honor. What were they up to? Why now? “Who put this Idea in your head Lyra?” “I am an adult. I can have ideas of my own” She stands quickly from her chair. “We need to move past this, It has been ten years” She gets louder. I feel myself start to grow angry. I stand from my seat to breath and calm myself. “Lyra, I think you need to change your tone” I say barely separating my teeth. She takes a step away from me to compose herself as well. We all tend to get testy nearing the end of winter. “I’m sorry” Her eyes fill with tears. Damnit. “Fine Lyra, Have the party but don’t expect me to stick around to long” She flashes a smile and leaves the room. I think it’s time to let Lucien out for a night.
