I am Julian Sterling’s fiancée. On Thanksgiving, he takes me home to meet his family. His father is Arthur Sterling, the psychology professor who spent five years pretending he had never reduced me to a file marked "Patient 047." Then Arthur corners me in the hall and says the words he once trained my body to obey: “Sleeping Lily.” My knees almost lock. The recorder in my purse is already running.

Chapter 1 Patient 047 at the Thanksgiving Table
The Sterling estate had polished marble, old portraits, and a front door heavy enough to belong on a bank. Julian squeezed my hand before the butler opened it. “Ready to meet the dragon?” he asked. I managed a smile. “I’ve handled dragons before.” He laughed. I kept looking at the door. Arthur Sterling was waiting beside the stone fireplace with a glass of red wine. His suit fit perfectly. So did the expression he used for donors, students, and cameras. Five years earlier, I had watched the same face from a chair in a locked therapy room. “Dad, this is Chloe.” Julian drew me closer. “My fiancée.” Arthur looked straight at me. Wine slipped over the rim of his glass and landed on the white rug. The stain was small. His housekeeper noticed it; Julian did not. “Chloe.” Arthur set down the glass before his hand could betray him again. “Julian has told us so much about you. What a pleasure.” He offered his hand. I nodded instead and kept hold of Julian’s arm. At dinner, Arthur sat at the head of the table and chose every subject. Eleanor Sterling listened from the other end, diamonds at her throat and one finger resting on her wineglass. “Julian says you work in crisis management,” Arthur said as he cut his turkey. “That can mean almost anything.” It was an old move. He supplied the definition, then waited for me to fit inside it. “I find the problem people keep overlooking,” I said. “Usually it’s the person everybody trusts.” Julian stopped buttering his roll. Across the table, Eleanor looked from me to her husband. Arthur drank some wine. “What are you working on now?” Five years of saved emails, copied ledgers, and therapy had brought me to that question. I folded my napkin once. “A pro bono case study. The subject uses therapy language to break down patients and keep them quiet.” Arthur’s knife stopped against the plate. “He takes their names away and gives them numbers,” I continued. “It makes the paperwork cleaner.” Eleanor put down her glass. Julian glanced between us. “Chloe, what case is this?” I kept my eyes on Arthur. “The central file is Patient 047.” His fork and knife hit the plate together. No one moved. A piece of turkey slid from the fork and left a streak of gravy on the china. Arthur reached for his water. He missed the stem of the glass on his first try. After dessert, I excused myself to find the powder room. I needed thirty seconds without Julian asking what had happened at the table. I had barely passed the second family portrait when Arthur seized my arm and drove me back against the marble wall. His breath smelled of red wine. “What do you think you’re doing here, Lily?”
