On the way to the hospital to deliver our baby, I found a box of condoms in the glove compartment.
Warm amniotic fluid kept running down my legs, but I didn't even bother wiping it away.
"Whose are these?"
Chase kept his eyes on the road, his expression unreadable.
"Sienna's."
Sienna. My best friend for the past ten years.
Another violent contraction tore through me, leaving me drenched in a cold sweat.
I wrapped both arms around my swollen belly and bit my lip until I tasted blood.
"Why?"
Chase finally glanced at me, as if the answer should've been obvious.
"Helen, you've been pregnant for months. I've been holding back this whole time. Sienna's divorce wasn't long ago, and she needed someone too. It didn't mean anything. We were just helping each other out."
Three months earlier, I'd accompanied Sienna to catch her cheating husband. The stress had triggered premature labor, and both my baby and I had nearly died.
Now I realized I was the biggest fool in the entire story.
A bitter laugh escaped me as tears streamed down my face and landed on the back of my hand.
Just then, Chase's phone rang.
A woman's teasing voice came through the speaker.
"Are you coming over tonight after you get Helen settled? Don't forget to bring those cooling condoms I like."
Chase stiffened. After a brief pause, he cleared his throat.
"Helen's in labor. I'm taking her to the hospital."
I snatched the phone from his hand, took a slow, steady breath, and said in a calm voice that was colder than ice, "Save it. The moment this baby is born, I'm filing for divorce. Then you two can be together."
