CHAPTER 14 Rory was awoken by the sound of Cruikshank climbing down her ladder. She stretched and sat up. “Lovey, why do you still insist on sleeping on the floor?” Cruikshank asked as she reached the ground. “You do understand how a bed works, don’t you? You lie on it, you get comfortable, and then you sleep.” Rory shrugged. “Ain’t never slept on a bed my whole life. Don’t see the need to start now. Anyway, it’s too soft. Hurts my back. I like solid ground beneath me when I sleep, and open sky overhead.” “You’re not going to be an urchin all your life.” “I b****y well hope not! I’m working hard enough to make something of myself.” “Well then, why not sleep on the bed? It might take time, but trust me, once you’ve got used to it, you won’t be able to make do without one.” Rory shrug
