Chapter 2.

Florence You could say I have the typical life of a she-wolf. I was born an omega. When I was two years old, my mother died because of human hunters. Despite such a terrible event, I had a normal life with my father and my younger brother, living in the Scorpio pack. I never lacked anything, but we weren't rich either. We simply lived... Peacefully. Things changed when I turned sixteen. At that age, I shifted into my wolf for the first time, and that was when they told me I was an omega, the weakest members of the pack. After discovering my new status as an omega, I believed my life would be difficult and that I would never find love, because everyone wants strong children, and omegas... That's not what's expected from us. Then Griffin appeared. He was another boy from my pack, a couple of years older than me, but only a few days after my first shift, he claimed me as his mate, and we both fell in love. I believed Griffin was different, that he was the only one in our pack who didn't see me as some kind of burden for being an omega. He loved me and accepted me for who I was. He wanted a life by my side. But there was always something he wanted more than me... And that was his dream, his greatest ambition: to become one of the alpha's guards. "If only I could go to the human cities, I'd finally prove what I'm worth, how strong I can be. But this place holds me back. Living in the pack limits me," Griffin used to complain. We lived in the Scorpio pack, ruled by the Drexler family on Mount Rainier. Our people built a beautiful city beneath the ground and inside the mountain, keeping us protected from humans and other dangerous beings. But living away from the human world was no longer an option. Many decades ago, the alpha established his main residence in Seattle, where several of the wolves he trusted the most worked and were responsible for obtaining supplies for the pack. I know they always say that everyone in the pack is equal, but honestly... We all know that's not true. There is a certain hierarchy. First comes the alpha and his family, then his beta, who is second in command, followed by his advisors, then the guards and part of his army, and finally us... The wolves who live and keep the pack running from the shadows. That never bothered me, not because I considered myself weak for being an omega. I liked the peaceful life in the pack, having simple jobs, living in the mountain, and being safe. Before meeting my mate, I had never thought about leaving my peaceful life or my family. But Griffin dreamed bigger. He wanted to be the first member of his family to leave the pack for the human world. He dreamed of becoming one of the alpha's guards. So, when I turned eighteen and he was given the opportunity to become a low-ranking guard in the city, he asked me to go with him. "Just imagine the possibilities. We'd live in a huge building built by the alpha in Seattle. We'd also have human money, real things... Not the houses and belongings they give us here in the pack," Griffin complained. "I like the things we're given in the pack. We can all share them," I replied, somewhat confused. "You'll like the things in the city even more, I promise. I'm asking for your support, Flo. I want to fulfill my dream, and I can only do it if you're with me. Please, come to the city with me," Griffin pleaded, taking my hands and looking into my eyes. And like an idiot... I agreed. That's how we got married and moved to Seattle a year ago. My father and my brother weren't entirely convinced, but since they knew Griffin was my mate and saw how "happy" I was to go with him, they decided not to interfere. Now that everything is over... I wish they had stopped me. I left the apartment without any destination, walking through the long hallways of the apartment complex where our pack had settled in the city, hoping to find a place where I could hide and simply fall apart. I never felt comfortable here. The massive building owned by the alpha was divided according to your rank as a guard. The newly appointed guards lived on the lower floors, while those held in the highest esteem within the pack lived on the upper floors. Above the clouds, at the very top, was the penthouse where the alpha and his family, the Drexlers, lived. Since I have nowhere else to go, I decide to go down to the ground floor and sit in a corner, hoping not to be noticed by the other members of the pack until I figure out what to do... I guess I'll have to call my family back on Mount Rainier. My father and my brother will probably pay for a ticket so I can get there, but... how quickly will that happen? This is terrible. I don't have a single cent in my coat. How am I supposed to get home? "Hey... Are you okay?" Raising my head, I come face to face with someone I recognize but who is also... a stranger to me. It's Harriet Avery, Harper Avery's younger sister, the last person I want to see right now. Why is she here? Did she come to laugh at me? "Yes," I reply, forcing a smile. "Everything's fine. You don't have to worry..." "Your name is Florence, Griffin Gravemont's wife, isn't it?" she asks, her voice filled with compassion. It's obvious she knows who I am and what happened to me. Tired of feeling humiliated, I simply nod, wanting to get rid of her so I can continue drowning in my misery. "Do you have somewhere to spend the night?" she asks in the same compassionate tone. "I don't need your charity," I reply firmly. "It's not charity. It's just... a small act of compensation, on behalf of the Avery family. I truly... am very sorry." Looking at her remorseful expression, I want to trust her, but then I remember her annoying sister, and my blood starts boiling again. "Is this something your sister asked you to do? Or maybe my ex-husband?" "No, not really. If it makes you feel a little better, I actually... don't talk to Harper very much either. I left my family and have been living somewhere else for quite some time." I hesitate once more, but not wanting to be alone any longer, I stand up and decide to go with her. Now I just have to find a way to get back home...
