Chapter 1.
Florence "I reject you as my mate... So I can fulfill my dream." When I heard my husband say those words, my life completely fell apart. I couldn't believe it. This was supposed to be the celebration of our first wedding anniversary, but somehow I ended up here, standing in the middle of the living room of our small apartment, facing my mate and his supposed lover. Today I woke up excited about our first wedding anniversary, planning a romantic evening with my husband, hoping that this special date could repair our relationship, which had been distant over the past few weeks. However, while I was preparing dinner for the celebration, I was surprised when I heard the front door open, and with a smile, I thought it was my mate coming home early. "Griff, you're home early from work..." I greeted him cheerfully, walking toward the entrance of our apartment to welcome him. When I reached the living room, I was surprised to see my husband accompanied by another woman. Dressed in a tight purple dress, she was carrying several suitcases. "Griff?" I asked in confusion. "You didn't tell me we were having guests today..." When I spoke and interrupted them, my husband sighed and turned toward me, looking at me with a mixture of annoyance and discomfort, as if I wasn't supposed to be there, in my own home. "I'm sorry, Flo. I didn't tell you, but... we're going to have a guest living with us from now on," explained Griffin, my husband of one year, the werewolf I recognized as my mate and the man I once believed would become my lifelong partner. "A guest?" I asked, confused, looking once again at the unfamiliar woman. Griffin and I grew up together in the beautiful but small Scorpio pack on Mount Rainier. Like everyone else who came from small packs, we all knew each other, so I knew the woman with him wasn't a member of his family... In fact, I had seen that woman before. "I'm so sorry, Flo," Griffin said as he slowly walked toward me. "But she's moving in here from now on, and she's going to become my new partner." Unable to believe what I had just heard, I looked at the woman again, recognizing her as Harper Avery, a member of the Avery family, one of the families closest to the alpha of our pack. "I don't understand. Why?" I asked, on the verge of bursting into tears. "Come with me. Don't make a scene," Griffin said, glancing at his new "girlfriend" while grabbing my arm a little too tightly. Unable to resist, I let Griff lead me into the bedroom we shared in our small apartment, leaving Harper alone in the living room. Up until now, she hadn't said a single word. "I need you to understand," Griff said, closing the door and leaving us alone. "I have to do this for my future... Our future." "Our future? How could our future possibly get better if you're leaving me for another woman?" "The Avery family is the closest to the alpha. Everyone says that the elderly Alpha Damian will soon step down and allow one of his two grandsons to become the new leader. When that happens, all the guards and the power structure of the pack will change. If I have Harper as my wife, I'll have a much better chance of being considered for a position as one of the alpha's guards. We'll achieve our dream!" Griffin said excitedly. I didn't answer. Tears continued streaming down my cheeks while my heart was breaking apart. Is he really doing all of this for us? No... It's nothing but his own greed. "Please don't look at me like that," Griffin pleaded before letting out a sigh. "It'll only be temporary. Once I get my position as one of the alpha's guards, I'll leave Harper and come back to you. We'll get married again, and everything will be fine." "So you expect me to just stand by and accept you marrying another woman?" I asked, on the verge of breaking down. "I'm asking you to support me so I can achieve my dream, Florence. The reason we came here in the first place. Do you remember?" I couldn't take it anymore. The situation I was living through was so ridiculous that it simply... overwhelmed me. So, pulling free from Griffin's grip, I left the bedroom to grab my shoes and a coat, wanting to escape this nightmare as quickly as possible. Harper had made herself comfortable in the living room of my apartment, sitting on one of the couches and looking at her phone as if none of this were a big deal, without having said a single word since she arrived. Didn't she have a conscience? Just as I was about to leave, Griffin came after me and caught me by the wrist, dragging me back inside the apartment. "Where the hell do you think you're going?" he demanded furiously. "You have to sign this before you leave!" "Stop! You're hurting me!" I screamed, trying to make him let go. But Griffin didn't seem to hear me. It felt as though his own greed had completely consumed his mind. Dragging me along, he took me to the dining room, where he practically threw me onto the table and placed several papers in front of me. At the top, I could read the heading: "Divorce Agreement." "If you want to leave, I won't stop you. But before that, you have to sign this," he ordered firmly. Taking the papers into my hands, my heart shattered once again. How far was Griff willing to go for his ambitions? "But... I'm your mate..." I reminded him through tears. "Is that what's stopping you from accepting the divorce?" Griffin asked, his eyes as cold as ice. "Fine, then I'll give you exactly what you've been asking for..." He won't do it. Griffin knows that breaking the mate bond lasts a lifetime. Even if we divorce and he plans to come back to me, if he really breaks our bond... "I reject you as my mate... So I can fulfill my dream," Griffin said, looking me straight in the eyes without hesitation. When my husband said those words, I fell to my knees and let out a groan of pain. I had been warned about the pain a werewolf goes through if their mate decides to reject them, but actually feeling it was something completely different. It hurt so much that it made me tremble. It was indescribable. When I finally managed to recover, deciding to hold on to the little pride I had left, I stood up and picked up a pen, signing the stupid divorce papers. "I hope you have a happy life..." I whispered, looking him in the eyes. Without another word, I continued on my way out of the apartment, where I broke down into tears and sobs, unable to believe that I had lost everything in a single night. Now I no longer had a home, a mate, or even someone to lean on... I was completely alone.
