Chapter 4
Lightening! It felt like electricity was coursing through my hand. The teen pulled his arm back like he’d touched something hot and shook his hand. He looked at me awkwardly then ran off.
‘What the hell was that?!?!?’ I thought. I’ve never felt anything like it.
“You ok, Laney?” Jamie asked, “You’re suddenly so pale.”
“I’m fine. Jamie, do you know who that was?”
Jamie shrugged her shoulders. “Nope.”
One of the guys, Nick, said “That’s Joey Evans. He’s gone to school with us since 5th grade. Total science nerd. He let me sit next to him on test day in Chemistry and I aced the test. He’s so smart, it’s sick.”
‘Joey Evans??’ I thought. How had I never seen or heard of this guy?? Now I was on a mission to know more. I found myself suddenly fixated on him. Joey Evans. I sat in Spanish class, my mind drifting. I twirled my light brown hair around my index finger. Had I just imagined that shock? What was up? This couldn’t be my mate, could it? But he wasn’t an Alpha, or a Beta or a warrior. Mom had said my mate would probably be an Alpha. Just my luck, I, daughter of an Alpha would be mated to a skinny, quiet science geek. I didn’t know what to do.
I tried to search him on social media put couldn’t find anything. He had nothing. So weird. I Googled his name. No social media. I found he had submitted several articles to the Science times magazine. I clicked on those, but they were too in depth for me to follow. They were about different carbon dating procedures and which testing is more affective. Clearly Joey Evans was smart.
‘Mrs. Laney Evans’ I doodled on a notebook page. Ugh! No! I scribbled it out before anyone saw. What was I doing? Why was I acting this way? I needed to find this Joey guy and talk to him, but I knew nothing about him. We’d gone to school together for 8 years and he’d escaped my notice completely until today.
