Nick woke slowly, shivered, and pressed closer to Todd, listening to the gentle lob-dub of his master’s heartbeat. The sun was going down, the air getting more of a chill. Nick hated that Adam had died, but Adam had made his own choices. Nick couldn’t be responsible and knew in his head he shouldn’t feel as if he were. His heart was going to take a while to catch up. Todd believed in him, and at the end of the day, that was all that really mattered to Nick. All they had to do was wait until it was dark, cross the small expanse of land to the train yard, and hop a freight train out of the city. It seemed like a pathetically simple plan, but Nick knew between here and there could be, and probably were, countless and as yet unseen dangers. The feeling of his chest being clenched in chains
