A New Start
kerrie's POV
Kerrie Landon swallowed a long deep breath as she entered the intimidating building she had been standing in front of for almost ten minutes, Maverick Entertainment. The entertainment agency building was one of the largest buildings in New York City and it covered more land and floors than she could care to count.
As she passed through its double glass doors, one of many others that lined the entrance of the building, she noticed that the air inside the building was clear and cool compared to the fine dust filled hot air that was outside the building, in the city of New York.
At this rate, mother Earth would soon give up on them, People needed to stop polluting the air and environment, it’s not like they had a choice though. mother Earth was already tired of human’s s**t, it was showing in how many natural disasters she was slapping humans with.
Kerrie glanced around the building wondering where she should go to first, she was certainly not lost but she was confused. This was the first time she was stepping her foot inside the building so she didn’t know where she was supposed to go, to get to her destination.
She scoffed more to herself than any other, “ you should have done your research Kerrie or even ask questions, Only you manages to pull off confused on your first day of work…”, she sighed, scolding herself as she checked her phone for the message the agency had sent to her. They had told her to resume work today and she was supposed to be heading to the office on the 38th floor.
Good, now how does she get there, the elevators, she thought.
Kerrie adjusted the strap of her hand bag and walked towards one of the elevators on the ground floor. She was closing the message app on her phone and was not focusing as she walked, when she mistakenly bumped into someone dropping her phone on the floor.
At first she was startled that she had managed to cause a problem when she had not even started work, then it occurred to her that her phone was no longer in her hand, “ Oh my God!” , she exclaimed bending to pick the phone only to see that it was already in someone else’s hands, the man she had bumped into.
This had got to be one of the most embarrassing moments in her life recently, yeah, recently, she had past embarrassing moments that could beat this particular moment.
Kerrie looked at the person in front of her who was holding two phones in his hand, obviously hers and his own. He was dressed in black slacks and a blue shirt and had a grin on his face, like he was amused at her.
She bit her lips, suddenly feeling very conscious of herself. She slowly lowered her head to the floor, letting her hair cover half of her face, “ I am sorry for bumping into you… “, she started to apologize only to be cut off by the guy.
The man smiled at her, a Charming one at that, “ I’m sorry, I should be apologizing for not watching where I was going to , not you. I wasn’t paying attention, my bad… “, he explained.
She had one thought running through her mind, 'end this conversation’. Kerrie gave him a tight smile, only because he had offered one. She was trying not to draw attention to her face, so her smile was brief and short, “ that makes us both.. “, she mumbled rolling her eyes when the man looked behind her.
It was obvious that he had been distracted when he looked behind her, only God knows what had caused the distraction. She was sure that he didn’t hear her because he asked, “ Sorry? “.
She waved her hands to dismiss him, no need to continue talking. She had a job to report to that morning and she was going to be late if this continued.
“ never mind, thank you for picking up my phone…”, Kerrie said, as she stretched her hands over for him to give the phone back to her.
He seemed to be lost in thought because he was still staring at her. It was either the man had a short attention span or he…., she snorted, it was the scar, it had to be the scar on her face, that was why he was still staring at her, she thought.
She sighed, this was not the first time she was meeting people who got lost staring at the scar on her face. she had met people like this, hell, she met them every single day, that was why she allowed her hair to cover a part of her face, to try to hide the scar.
He was probably wondering why she had a scar on her cheek instead of a dimple, that was why he was looking at her. Curious people, she shook her head.
Instead of waiting for him to hand the phone over to her, she gently grabbed it out of his hand, pulling him away from his thoughts. The man blinked, looking down at his hand and then at her, realizing too late, what had happened.
She would have punched him if not for his handsome face and piercing blue eyes that seems to compliment his brown hair.
“ Thanks for this again!” , Kerrie said, walking away.
She heard the man call after her, maybe to apologize for his mistake, because that seems to be the reaction of people whenever they were caught staring by her, but she had no time to stop and chat about why she looked the way she did or how she forgave them because it was just a natural reaction to a scar, be it on her face or on someone else, people tend to look and be curious.
“ hold up!,” Kerrie shouted as she rushed for the elevator doors that was about to close. Someone who she was grateful for held the door as she entered the space, she nodded to the woman who offered her a kind smiled.
She moved to press the floor number, but noticed that someone had already pressed the button, so she moved towards the back to avoid being noticed.
Kerrie had thought that her scarred face was not going to be a problem in this job but apparently it was already proving to become a problem if someone she didn’t know was already staring at her.
Her colleagues in her former job had called her scar, As in the character in the cartoon Lion king. How they had come up with that barbaric name to describe her was baffling. That had not been the only name they had called her. It was primarily because of the verbal abuses and the unhealthy working environment that she had resigned from the job.
Kerrie had been lucky when she had seen the recruitment advertisement, Maverick entertainment was currently recruiting for assistants for one of their groups and she thought it wise to apply, what more could she loose.
Even though she had the qualifications and she knew that she was well capable of handling the job, She had been shocked when she got the message the next day that she was invited for an interview scheduled for that day. If they were already inviting applicants for interviews, then it means that they were desperately searching for assistants.
She had attended the interview and by luck was chosen as one of the best and offered an employment on the spot. The whole thing had seemed so surreal and it was only the fact that no one had known that she applied for the job that comforted her, she would have accused a certain someone for sticking his nose in her business and giving her the job unmerited.
Aside that, Maverick Entertainment one of the greatest company anyone would wish to work in, their employees enjoy awesome benefits that comes along with the job, Though she had heard that they worked their asses off. If working her ass off would give her the privilege to enjoy those benefits, then she sure was ready.
The company was also the home to one of the country’s finest group, Core Four, popularly known as CF. The group of four has been and was currently winning hearts and award titles since they debuted years back and everyone was waiting for their comeback album which was announced to be released in a few weeks.
Kerri would be eternally grateful though if their paths and hers, especially a certain someone, do not cross during her stay here at the company, she doubt it would though, since she was going to be working with another group. She was safe, she thought.
The elevator binged and some of its occupants exited, they were almost at the floor where she was required to be at. She waited until they got to the 38th floor and she rushed out immediately along with others who were stepping out too.
The floor was wide and large, and she could see different people were rushing towards a hall way leading to the office areas. She looked around the reception but no one was there, so she followed since she didn’t know where to go to, perhaps, that was the way.
While she walked down the hallway, she could hear voices like they were arguing. Few seconds later, she saw why people were rushing towards the hall. two guys were shouting at each other, well one was currently scolding the other person who was fuming. She looked around at the persons that were gathered there. They acted like this was a normal occurrence.
The younger guy was glaring at the older man, “ I was pissed, am still pissed. I don’t know why Nox is targeting me at practice, he’s only seeing my mistakes and he’s acting like I’m the weak link of the Group!”, he shouted.
The older man took a step back while he ran a hand through his hair, “ Watch your tone Jay and please stop saying things like that, also, stop shouting, you could pass the message across without shouting.” He told the other guy looking around at the persons watching them like he was just realizing that he had an audience.
Kerrie caught who the younger guy was, Jay. She rolled her eyes, of course it had to be him. No one had that ability to attract other as he does, she sighed.
After all she had done to start a new life, she would have suspected that the universe was plotting something. what were the chances of running into him here, maybe he came here to practice, she thought. Thank goodness he didn’t see her, it would have been awkward.
Kerrie looked around watching if someone would interfere and stop the two guys but everyone was just standing back and pretending like they were not watching the two guys.
Someone came to stand beside her, she noticed. She shifted so they were not too close before she turned to look at who it was. The man was shaking his head disapprovingly.
“ I can’t believe they are at it again. I’m actually surprised they haven’t killed themselves yet with the way they argue every time”. The man beside her commented.
She wondered if the man was talking to her or someone else. He apparently was waiting for a reply because he turned to face her, “ You’re new here…”, he said staring at her face.
She made an effort to cover her scar with her long hair.
“ One of the new assistants?” , the man asked.
Kerrie nodded her head, “ Yes, I’m one of the new recruits… I didn’t know where to go to when I got here. I saw people coming towards this area, so I followed…” she said, seeing his company’s ID hanging from his neck now that he was facing her.
She squinted her eyes to scan his ID seeing his name, Logan and she noticed that he was a manager at the company too.
‘ s**t!’, she caused internally.
Logan studied the lady in front of him, “ You’re in the wrong place Miss….” He said, Head down the hallway towards the end and you’ll see where other recruits are. Hurry before your director gets there”, he informed her.
She released a bated sigh, he had not scolded her, rather, he had pointed her to the right direction. She nodded her head in thanks, turning around to leave but then she caught the attention of one of the guys arguing, Jay.
Their eyes met and they both locked eyes with each other, for a moment there, she had thought that he would call her, but he looked away quickly. Had he not recognized her, since some of her features had changed over the years, like her hair that was now longer and darker or was he trying to act like he didn’t know who she was. Either way, she was glad that he had not identified her, so she moved down the hall that Logan had shown her.
Jay was a member of the group, Core four, that was winning hearts. She sometimes wondered why he would choose to join a group when he was already very wealthy and his family was rich.
Kerrie continued down the path, it was none of her business, She was here to work and that’s what she was going to do. Nothing was going to distract her here, not even get archenemies, Jayden Maverick.
This was a new start for her and this meeting had been a coincidence, she thought heading towards the other recruits.
