Adeline's POV
I SUDDENLY stepped back when they all looked at me. Especially when the maids besides me squeezed me in, as if preventing me from leaving the line.
I felt fear creeping in, especially when the man who carried a heavy presence in the dining room stood up.
“There’s garlic in what you cooked, Miss Adeline. Do you know that garlic is forbidden for us vampires?” Huff said to me. He was standing beside the one they called Master. He emphasized the word vampires, as if he meant something more by it.
Smoke was coming out of his mouth and he seemed to be having difficulty breathing. Perhaps he had swallowed some of the food mixed with garlic.
But as far as I remember, I didn’t put any garlic in what I cooked. Unless someone sabotaged my dish and added garlic to it.
“I-I didn’t—”
“How could it not be you when you were the only one who cooked that?” the woman who was with me in the kitchen suddenly cut me off. All of us who were lined up had cooked together in the kitchen.
“Yes, I cooked it, but I really didn’t put garlic in it! Please believe me! I’m innocent!” I pleaded desperately. I felt like this was the end for me. I didn’t know them. And I knew they were stronger than me. I had no chance against them—they were vampires, and I was only human.
I begged as I looked into our Master’s cold eyes fixed on me. I couldn’t read what he was feeling—whether he was angry, annoyed, or amused. His expression was completely blank.
Suddenly, two men in black suits grabbed my arms and forcefully dragged me upstairs.
I pleaded several times, especially to our Master, whom they called Vladimir.
I glanced at the woman who had come to my room when I woke up earlier, hoping she would help me. But she wasn’t looking at me. Instead, she kept her head down, and beside her was the instigating woman smirking at me.
I clenched my fists, unable to stop my anger. I strongly felt she was the one behind this.
If I could just prove it, I would shove an entire garlic bulb into her mouth.
The men in black suits shoved me hard into a dark room. It was cold, sending chills down my spine. Most of all, I could feel a heavy aura inside the room even though no one seemed to be there.
But I was wrong. The lights suddenly turned on—everything bathed in red. Not far away, I saw the figure of a man standing in the corner. His head was lowered, hands in his pockets, and he was as tall as Master Vladimir.
I suddenly dropped to my knees when he finally lifted his face toward me. I immediately began begging for my life.
“Master Vladimir, please believe me. I really didn’t put garlic in your food. Plea—”
“Shut up,” he cut me off with his cold, deep voice.
In just a blink, he was already in front of me, holding my cheek. Tears fell from my eyes because I felt like this was truly the end.
So many thoughts flooded my mind. If I disappeared, what would happen to my siblings? Who would provide for them and send them to school? What would their future be if I died now?
“How can I believe a newcomer like you?”
“Being new here is not a basis for the truth, Master. Even if I’m new, I can tell the truth—unlike those who’ve been here longer and can lie just to get your attention,” I answered seriously, meeting his gaze without backing down.
His eyes were melting—like they were piercing straight through my soul.
“I’m willing to do anything. Just don’t kill me. I’m telling the truth,” I added as I held onto his wrist.
A chilling smirk formed on his lips. “Really?”
I slowly nodded. My heart was pounding wildly under his intense stare.
“Are you a virgin?”
I swallowed hard at his question.
Oh no… is this it? Is this the end of my virgin card? What terrible timing.
“Yes, I’m still a—AHHH!!!” I wasn’t able to finish because he bit me on the neck.
I had no choice but to grip his arm tightly and shut my eyes from the pain.
It felt like being bitten by a person—but worse, as if there was a knife involved. He had fangs. He was a vampire.
I felt myself weakening as he continued to suck my blood.
Until little by little, darkness consumed me. The last thing I heard was his worried voice calling my name.
Vladimir’s POV
“YOU drank too much of her blood, Vladimir. Her body can’t handle it. It’s not good to rush things like this—she might die because she’s still human,” the doctor told me before leaving my room.
I looked at Adeline, pale as she lay on my bed. Perhaps I had rushed her too much. In my eagerness to taste her blood, I didn’t think about my limits. And this is what happened to her.
“She’s obviously exhausted from working hard for her siblings, Master.”
I found myself nodding at Huff’s words, which made him stare at me.
“What?”
“You’re different, Master.”
I froze and slightly parted my lips. “How am I different? I’m still the same.”
“No, Master. Something has truly changed in you. You suddenly care about the woman whose blood you took. Before, you didn’t care even if they died. But with Adeline, you even called for a—”
“Stop,” I cut him off, trying not to falter.
Huff lowered his head. “Forgive me, Master.”
“I’m only doing this to prolong my life and improve it with the help of her blood.”
I looked at Adeline.
“And I will never fall for someone as weak as her.”
