Kathryn's Pov
“I can't believe they elected Kara Lawson as student body president again.” Monday's were always my worst day but now it just got a hell of a lot more worse. Last week my name was second on that scholarship list now I'm third—third!, How the heck did they surpass me in just one day and of course ms.goody two shoes has to be on top, I hate her fake attitude, I hated her fake smile, I hated her—. “Hi Kara, I see you've been busy with those extra curricular activities again.” I said in my perky voice. Everything about her was unique the way she gave pep talk like it were a magic brew of knowledge, god even her eyes were a unique color and to top it all off she was a brunette—the enemy of a blonde.
She looked up at the list pretending to be shocked. “Oh my god! I'm on top, I thought Christina was at the top I guess those extra curricular activities are really paying off who knew volunteering at a retirement center could be this much beneficiary.” She said brushing her hair from her face.
That's what she does? I expected her to say rescue cats from burning buildings.
“Second in line? My parents won't be happy to hear this.” We both glanced back at the Asian who looked like she scored zero on her SAT exam, another one of the elites that i hate.
“It beats being third.” I said under my breath but no one heard me. “I love your hair like that Christina.” I added.
My comment went unheard of course because she was having a teen-life crisis.
“Fourth again? I did like two extra curricular activities this weekend damn it oh and congratulations Kara if anyone deserves the scholarship it's you.” Charlotte said making me give her a sideways glare. Why does Kara deserve it? Is it because she pretends to be this sweet girl that everyone adores -gag- she's not sweet guys take it from me I've known her since grade school. Everyone always says she's such a nice person and very easy to get along with like really? That complement has run its course through life itself, the meaning had completely changed, the cool girl is no longer the cool girl she's the girl that's destined to have no job after high school.
“Thanks Char that really means a lot.” Kara replied, I held myself back from rolling my eyes. At this school smart was cool, smart was the new rad and which means over competitive teen girls and boys vying for the top ivy league and class valedictorian which means Full Scholarship to Harvard.
James and his varsity team passed by and of course he only had eyes for the only girl who obviously was too shy and quirky to ever notice.
“Wow you're on top Kara that's awesome but it's not like you need a stupid list to show you're the smartest girl in school.” He said trying to engage in conversation with her and failing miserably. James didn't know how to engage in smart people talk, stick to football James!.
“Oh, hi James sorry I can't chat now class starts in a few minutes.” Kara said already rushing off and by a few minutes she meant fifteen to be exact plenty of time to talk to him but who the hell can juggle a boyfriend and maintain a A+ grade. She always does that just to avoid him and any other distraction.
He looked crushed by his crush poor jock, note my sarcasm. “Maybe next time James.” I said patting his shoulder.
He pretended to not get what I was saying. “Seeing as you've been trying since freshman year I'll put in a good word for you.”
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “Since when are you nice and give a s**t if I get a date or not what do you get out of this?.”
“Come on why does everyone think I'm mean and have an ulterior motive behind my niceness that's so prejudice James, I'm hurt..” I said batting my eyelashes.
The bell rang and that was his cue to leave. “Maybe I'll take you up on that offer Kate.” He said.
I smiled, how to knock a girl off her high horse you ask, well that's easy give her a hot jock to distract her. I can already see that scholarship with my name written on it. I'm terrible I know, get used to it.
Now that only leaves the other two Elites I need a plan, something sinister that won't be traced back to me like substituting weight loss bars with a foreign one that actually adds pounds.
Kara Lawson's POV
“Alright class I assume you all have your English assignment submission.” Mrs.Lincoln said eyeing us over her spectacles. “Kara how about you stand and read yours for the class.”
I think me and everyone else sitting in this room saw that coming, she always calls on me to read mine I assume it has something to do with my assertiveness at the way I attack all assignments.
I cleared my throat as I stood feeling eyes on me but one in particular to the right of me in his Letterman jacket. I didn't have a crush on him if that's what you're thinking it was more of a annoyed feeling, high school relationships are overrated and really don't make sense because there's college right after, new faces in different places and besides I have a strict rule books before boys.
“Ampersand, the strange mark has a fascinating past—
“Yawn.” Someone said making everyone giggle.
“Shane don't be rude.” Mrs. Lincoln said.
“It's alright Mrs.Lincoln it's the ones who's destined to work in a fast food outlet that's always disruptive.” I replied making the guys on the left snicker, what is this third grade?.
I continued on with my well put together assignment before anyone could fall asleep. When I sat down James leaned over to table and whispered. “You have paper stuck to your butt.” I tried not to show how embarrassed I was by that and I'm sure my cheeks were the same color of J.K Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy.
I muttered a quick thanks which sounded more like a grunting noise taking place in my throat. I was grateful for Mrs.Lincoln dimming the lights to put on her power point, I glanced at the excessive amount of notes being passed and wondered why I'm the only one worried about college and futuristic things.
“Can I borrow a pen?.” James interrupted me again to ask.
“You have one right there—
“It's not working.” He said then reached over and plucked the one I was holding right of my hand, I wasn't upset that he did that it was more along the lines of that was my favorite pen! I was very superstitious and had this weird belief that if I don't write with that pen I'll fail my exams.
“James give me my pen back!.” I whisper shouted.
“It’s just a pen.” He shrugged like it were nothing, it wasn't just a pen it was my lucky pen.
I was never disruptive in class that was rule of mine, today however I decided to be flexible on the rule. “James give me my pen back!.” I reached over to his side making my chair tilt all the way over to him, the lights came on to my horror and a bunch of 'oohs and ahhs’ echoed around the room, from an outside perspective it would come across as me trying to kiss him but let me assure you that was never my intention ever!.
“Kara and James you're being disruptive which is a new for you Ms.Lawson and I expected better.” Why was I the only one being scolded?.
James tried to whisper an apology but I ignored him.
This is why I pay no attention to the opposite s*x, I hope this doesn't affect my GPA or my running for Harvard.
“Lighten up.” I heard him muttered which made me feel like reaching over and strangling him.
“Of course you would say that, you entitled spoiled—.” I paused to regain myself because an honor student is not rude or disruptive and most certainly not one to point out such things. “I apologise James, no hard feelings.” Quick and simple and my attention went back to the lecture, I felt his eyes on me which made me feel self conscious, what was he staring at? Doesn't he have some cheerleaders skirts to look under?.
Mrs.Lincoln began another topic grasping my attention from James or at least that's what I hoped, I felt his eyes on me practically burning into my skin, this is new to me because I've never been under a telescope by the opposite s*x and if this is what these over hormonal teens are so hyped over then someone needs to organize a full evaluation on every high school teen existing.
“Well well well look who made it into the Gossip Guru for something other than her smarts.” Kate said, her high fructose hair spray was stifling.
“The who now? Is that some sort of fortune telling chinese horoscope?.”
She raised her eyebrows in shock, I don't get it am I supposed to know what that is?. “You've never heard about Gina the Gossip Guru?, She literally gives us all the scoops on the new hook ups and guess who she's saying is about to be the cutest unexpected couple of senior year?.” Kate enthusiasm about this confused me, I've never heard her talk about anything besides Harvard and Brown.
“Go on guess!.” She said again.
Should I feel bad that I don't know or care for this? I have a paper that I'm working on sitting right in front of me so why the hell should have care what Gina the gossiping guru has to say.
“Fine I'll just say it, it's you and James.” She smiled brightly.
Wait what? Why the hell are they saying that?. I scoffed. “Gina should get a new hobby, this gossip thing is clearly not for her, James and I aren't even friends there's no way we could or even think about hooking up and besides I'm in a fully committed relationship with my books.”
Kate smiled and shrugged. “I don't know I always see him staring at you and not to mention he always tries to get your attention whenever we bump into him in the hallway.”
“Uh, huh, delusional is described as holding idiosyncratic beliefs or impressions that are contradicted by reality or rational argument, typically as a symptom of mental disorder.” I said holding my dictionary up to her.
She narrowed her eyes “Lookup denial while you're in there.”
“Kate, Kara.” A familiar voice said and I looked up to see James passing by as he went over to his table, I tried not to care or even acknowledge him.
“Did you not hear how he slurred your name, he's totally crushing on you.” She said.
“I don't know, slurring usually indicates drunkenness and with these new drugs popping up everywhere who knows what those jocks has been into.” The thought made me shudder.
“You're humoring, you better get some bandages because I see Cupid with his arrow and he's shooting your way.” Kate winked as she picked up her half empty tray.
“I'll do better, I'll have him arrested for carrying around a weapon with intent, and taken to a mental institution for wearing diapers. “ I said and she snorted.
2 minutes later
“Mind if I sit here?.” I heard from beside me, from the corner of my eyes I saw a blue letterman jacket that's usually associated with a jock, I glanced at a muscular toned James sitting next to me, it didn't bother me until people started giving us weird glances.
“Actually I was just leaving—
“Can we talk for a minute—
“Technically there's not really much you can say in a minute the whole thing would be a mess of incomplete sentences so it's probably best if we not...talk...at all.” I didn't want to give gossiping gina more ideas for her comic section.
He looked confused but yet I didn't stay to know much more, the male species is a very complicated being.
“Bye James —
“See you around.” His words floated to me as I was already halfway across the cafeteria. People still stared but I couldn't care, I've made up my mind about what I want in life and no over hormonal teen is going to get in my way
