Chapter 1 - The Night the Moon Turned Red
Lyra POV The moon was red the night my mate condemned me, not silver, not soft, not the gentle glow that once blessed our mating ceremony. Red. Like blood soaking into snow. I stood in the centre of the Bloodmoon clearing, wrists bound in iron laced with wolfsbane. My knees were streaked with dirt where they’d forced me down. Around me, the entire pack gathered in a wide circle. My pack, the wolves I healed, fed, and protected, would watch me die. A low murmur rippled through them, thick with accusation and fear. I could feel their doubt—but none dared speak it. At the front stood Alpha Kael Thorn. My mate, tall and unyielding, with dark hair brushing his collar. His golden eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight, but they did not soften when they met mine; they were stone. “You stand accused of treason against the Bloodmoon Pack,” Kael’s voice rang through the clearing. “I would never betray this pack,” I said, forcing my voice steady. “I would never betray you.” Selene stepped forward then — graceful, venomous Selene. Her long silver-blonde hair shimmered beneath the moonlight—the Beta’s daughter, always at my side, always smiling until now. “She poisoned you, Alpha,” Selene said softly. “We all saw you fall ill. Who prepares your meals, if not the Luna?” Gasps rippled outward. I stared at her. “You forged the evidence,” I breathed. Selene only tilted her head, pity curling at the edges of her lips. Kael’s jaw tightened. “Enough.” The word cut deeper than any blade. I searched his face, reached for the bond between us — that glowing, sacred thread only mates could feel. It flickered, weak, and he was pulling away. “You know me,” I whispered. “Look at me, Kael. Feel the bond.” For one heartbeat — just one — his eyes wavered. Then Selene moved closer to him, not touching but close enough. “The Alpha cannot be ruled by emotion,” she said gently. “The pack must come first.” The pack …. always the pack. Kael stepped forward, power rolled off him in waves, pressing against my skin, suffocating. “As Alpha of Bloodmoon,” he declared, voice cold as winter frost, “I reject you as my mate.” The world shattered. A physical ripping tore through my chest. I screamed — not from pain alone, but from the violent snapping of the mate bond. It felt like my soul had been split open. My wolf howled inside me, wild and wounded. The pack flinched at the sound. Even Kael staggered slightly — rejection hurt the Alpha too. But he didn’t take it back; he didn’t fight for me. The bond dissolved into ash. Tears blurred my vision, but I refused to bow my head. “You will regret this,” I said hoarsely. Not a threat. Kael’s expression hardened further — as if my strength angered him. “For treason against the Alpha and the Bloodmoon Pack,” he continued, “the sentence is death.” Silence fell; not one wolf stepped forward in my defence, not one. Iron chains dragged me toward the execution stone, the same stone that is used for rogues, for criminals, for monsters. I lifted my chin as they forced me to my knees. The red moon glowed brighter overhead, bathing the clearing in crimson light. Selene watched from beside Kael. Her eyes met mine. Triumphant, that was when I understood, this had never been about poison. It had been about power, and I had been in her way. The executioner stepped forward, silver blade glinting. I searched the crowd one last time, no ally, no saviour. My gaze found Kael again. Even now… my heart betrayed me. “Look at me when you do this,” I demanded. He did. For a second, something flickered in his expression. Regret? Doubt? Too late. The blade pierced my chest, cold, burning. Silver fire spread through my veins. My wolf screamed. The clearing blurred as I collapsed forward, blood pooling beneath me. The last thing I saw was the red moon, and the last thing I felt…was not grief nor fear, it wasn’t even heartbreak. It was rage. And as darkness swallowed me, I whispered to the heavens: “If the Goddess is just… let me return.” Kael POV The moment her heart stopped beating, the world went silent, not the clearing, not the pack. It was me. The space inside my chest where the bond once burned — empty. I told myself it was necessary. An Alpha cannot appear weak. An Alpha cannot choose his mate over his pack. Selene’s evidence had been undeniable. Hadn’t it? I stared down at Lyra’s lifeless body. Her dark hair spilt across the snow like ink. Her blood stained the earth beneath her. The red moon flickered — then slowly shifted back toward silver. A strange chill crept down my spine. For a fleeting second, I felt something ancient stir in the air, watching, judging, and I shoved the feeling aside. “It is done,” I announced. But the words tasted wrong, because as her scent faded from the air…Something inside me began to fracture, and deep in the forest beyond the clearing, a wolf howled, not in mourning but in a promise.
