Chapter 3: A Pact in the Shadows

408 Words
The alley fell silent as the last shadow creature dissolved into black smoke, leaving only scorched pavement behind. Evelyn Ashford lowered her trembling hands, the blue flames dancing around her fingers slowly fading into the night. Her heart raced, but she refused to let the mysterious vampire see her fear. Kael Nightshade wiped the dark blood from his silver blade before slipping it beneath his long black coat. His sharp eyes searched the rooftops, making sure no other creatures were waiting to attack. “You knew they were coming,” Evelyn said, breaking the silence. Kael nodded. “I did.” “Then why didn’t you warn me sooner?” “Because I needed to know if you were truly the witch from the prophecy.” Evelyn frowned. “Prophecy? Stop speaking in riddles.” Kael sighed. “Five hundred years ago, witches and vampires nearly destroyed each other in a war that covered kingdoms in darkness. Before the final battle ended, an ancient oracle predicted that one powerful witch and one vampire would either unite both races… or become the reason they disappear forever.” Evelyn shook her head in disbelief. “You expect me to believe that my life was decided centuries before I was born?” “I expect you to believe what you have already seen,” Kael answered calmly. “Magic exists. Vampires exist. So does destiny.” Before Evelyn could respond, a strange symbol suddenly appeared on the back of her hand. It glowed with silver light before fading into her skin. Kael’s expression turned serious. “The prophecy has awakened.” Far beneath the city, inside the ruins of an ancient cathedral, a hooded figure stood before a massive stone coffin sealed with glowing runes. “The witch and the vampire have finally met,” the figure whispered. The runes shattered one by one. A deep growl echoed through the chamber as the coffin slowly opened. Back in the alley, a cold wind swept past Evelyn and Kael. “We’re running out of time,” Kael said. Evelyn looked into his crimson eyes and made her decision. “Then we face whatever is coming together.” For the first time in centuries, a witch and a vampire stood side by side—not as enemies, but as allies. Neither of them knew that their greatest challenge had only just begun, and the fate of both worlds now rested in their hands.
