Chapter 8: The Shadow Legion

The temple echoed with the slow applause of the cloaked stranger. His crimson cloak brushed the marble floor as dozens of masked warriors emerged from the shadows, surrounding Evelyn and Kael from every direction. Each carried a weapon forged from black crystal, its edge glowing with dark magic. Kael stepped protectively in front of Evelyn. “Stay close to me.” The stranger smiled. “So the great vampire spy has become a bodyguard.” Evelyn tightened her grip on the Moonstone Crown. The relic pulsed with gentle silver light, growing warmer in her hands. “Who are you?” she demanded. The man removed his hood, revealing pale skin marked with dark scars and eyes that glowed a sinister gold. “I am Lord Malakar, commander of the Shadow Legion.” Kael’s expression darkened. “I thought you died during the Great War.” “I did,” Malakar replied with a laugh. “The Dark Sovereign gave me a second life.” Without another word, he raised his sword. “Take the Crown.” The legion attacked. Steel clashed against steel as Kael met the first wave. His movements were swift and precise, forcing several attackers backward. Evelyn summoned brilliant blue flames that swept across the temple floor, creating a wall of magical fire between them and the enemy. But the flames faded almost instantly. “Their armor absorbs magic,” Evelyn said in shock. Malakar smiled. “Did you really think we came unprepared?” One of the warriors lunged toward Evelyn. Before the blade could reach her, the Moonstone Crown burst with silver light, creating a shimmering shield that knocked the attacker across the hall. Everyone froze. “The Crown has accepted her,” Orion whispered weakly as he struggled to remain standing. Malakar’s smile disappeared. “No…” he growled. “That power belongs to the Dark Sovereign.” The Crown floated above Evelyn’s head, surrounding her with streams of silver energy. Strange symbols appeared on the temple walls, and the floor trembled beneath everyone’s feet. Kael looked at her in amazement. “Evelyn… you’re awakening the relic.” A deep rumble shook the temple. A hidden staircase slowly emerged beneath the pedestal where the Moonstone Crown had rested. Orion pointed toward the passage. “Go! The staircase leads to the Hall of Echoes. There you will find the map to the second relic.” Kael grabbed Evelyn’s hand. “We have to move now.” Together they raced toward the staircase as arrows and dark magic filled the air behind them. Just before they disappeared underground, Malakar’s furious voice echoed through the temple. “You may escape today… but the relics will be mine.” The stone doorway sealed shut, plunging Evelyn and Kael into darkness. Then, somewhere deep beneath the temple, something ancient opened its eyes.
