The stone doorway slammed shut behind Evelyn and Kael, cutting off the sounds of battle above. Darkness swallowed them until the Moonstone Crown resting above Evelyn’s head began to glow with a gentle silver light.
The narrow passage stretched deep beneath the temple, its walls covered in ancient carvings of witches and vampires standing side by side beneath a blood-red moon.
Evelyn traced her fingers across one of the carvings.
“They weren’t always enemies,” she murmured.
Kael shook his head.
“No. Long ago, our people fought together. The Great War changed everything.”
As they continued forward, whispers drifted through the tunnel.
“Evelyn…”
She stopped.
“Did you hear that?”
Kael nodded slowly.
“This is the Hall of Echoes. It doesn’t speak with voices. It speaks with memories.”
The tunnel opened into a magnificent circular chamber. Crystal pillars reached toward the ceiling, reflecting the Crown’s silver light. In the center stood an ancient stone table, and resting upon it was a rolled parchment sealed with blue wax.
“The map,” Kael said.
Before either of them could move closer, the chamber filled with shimmering light.
Two ghostly figures appeared before them.
A woman dressed in white robes stood beside a man wearing black armor.
The woman smiled gently.
“Evelyn.”
Her voice was warm and familiar.
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat.
“Mother?”
The spirit nodded.
“I am Lyra Ashford.”
Beside her, the armored man looked at Kael.
“And I am Darius Nightshade.”
Kael stared in disbelief.
“My father…”
Darius placed a hand over his heart.
“If you are seeing us, then the prophecy has entered its darkest chapter.”
Lyra stepped closer to Evelyn.
“My daughter, the Four Relics are not weapons. Together, they form the Seal of Dawn, the only power capable of imprisoning the Dark Sovereign forever.”
Darius continued, “But the relics demand sacrifice. Every choice you make from this moment onward will carry a cost.”
The map floated into the air, unrolling by itself.
A glowing symbol appeared in the eastern mountains.
“The Crystal Heart,” Lyra whispered. “It is hidden within the Frost Peaks, guarded by an ancient dragon who serves neither witches nor vampires.”
The spirits began to fade.
“Wait!” Evelyn cried. “There are so many questions.”
Lyra smiled sadly.
“The answers will find you when your heart is ready.”
With those final words, both spirits disappeared.
The chamber fell silent once more.
Kael carefully picked up the map.
Before he could roll it closed, a single drop of dark blood landed on the parchment.
Neither of them had been injured.
Slowly, they turned toward the shadows.
A low growl echoed through the chamber.
Two golden eyes opened in the darkness.
“You should have left while you still had the chance,” an unfamiliar voice said.
A massive beast stepped into the silver light, blocking the only exit.
Its black scales gleamed like polished stone, and smoke curled from its jaws.
Evelyn tightened her grip on the Moonstone Crown.
Their next trial had already begun.
