“Can this be delayed for at least three weeks?” Ariana asked in a pleading tone.
“Can you please pretend we are in love for just three more weeks and go with me to the annual gala awards?” She asked again not caring that she sounded desperate but was certain that the gala awards would change everything if he granted her the opportunity.
Once every year, all Business Elites in America had this annual gala/award ceremony to celebrate extraordinary Business men and women who had made great achievements in their various industries. There was even an award for uprising entrepreneurs.
Bruni Marchetti's expression darkened, finding her request to be rather comical. As a man who never laughed much, it was interesting to see him smile for the first time in her presence, except that it wasn’t a genuine one but was one full of mockery as his beautiful grey eyes held obvious disdain.
“You are really very ridiculous, Emilia. What will you do at the gala awards ceremony? You don’t have anything to showcase there so why are you so desperate to go there? Besides, I’m going with Quinn as my date now that she's back.”
Disdain laced his words as he glowered her, eyeing the plain white dress she wore with obvious distaste. There was nothing appealing about her appearance and Ariana herself knew it.
Emilia's heart stopped. She had only heard rumors within the estate and the company but now it was confirmed that her former best friend s***h now archenemy was back. His obvious distaste and disdain slashed through her already shattered heart painfully and the words slipped from her mouth.
“Quinn? My best friend? She's back?”
Bruni Marchetti was unfazed by her violent reaction. He had solemnly believed that someone must have kidn*pped Quinn for revenge against him and had never stopped searching for her over that past six months.
It just so happened that he was proved correct by the investigation report he received from his people, which clearly showed that Quinn had been kidn*pped that day and had endured a lot over the past few months, including losing some part of her memory that included the beautiful love they had shared together.
He had to be there for her to help her regain her memory and the love they once shared while overcoming the shadows that the k********g incident had left her with.
He regretted not taking charge of preparing for the wedding and properly protecting her the way he should have from the very beginning. Afterall, he was a powerful man and had many enemies. That would've saved him from all this unnecessary troubles.
“I don’t know anything about your relationship, but she’s the one I’m going with, that much is clear. To make it easy on you, I want you to sign the divorce papers so that we can get the formalities sorted out before the gala awards. Place your demands as long as they have nothing to do with being my partner to the gala awards. I will give you anything including half of my empire to compensate you for the six months we’ve been married."
“No!” Ariana shrieked, and Bruni Marchetti's brows were raised questioningly. She was always calm and collected, she had never raised her voice before but now she was suddenly yelling and looking crazy just because he asked to terminate a contract that both of them had previously agreed upon. Bruni Marchetti hated people who couldn't keep their word.
Mr Marchetti, please don’t do this. I can go to the gala awards alone, and you can be with Quinn as your date. I promise not to bother you at a but please don't do this.”
Ariana knew she looked desperate and her words were unbelievable and disgusting but she couldn't help herself. She firmly believed that if given more time, things could work out between them. Besides Quinn had wanted to kill her and If not for the kindhearted waiter who knocked the drink of of her hand that day and showed her a video of what Quinn had secretly done, Ariana would have been dead by now.
Ariana couldn't understand it. Quinn was madly in loved Bruni Marchetti's best friend, Timothy Brown, the eldest young master of the Brown family, an American elite family in the Mafia. He was the whom she had eloped with on her wedding day.
“Emilia, I want to marry Quinn as soon as possible now that she's back. But how will that be possible if I’m still legally married to you? Does that make any sense to you? She is the love of my life and I can't let her stay away from me now that I've found her after six whole month of searching and waiting. Besides, I don't love you."
Ariana's fragile heart broke into pieces with his words that sealed her fate, it was one thing knowing he didn't love her an it was a completely different feeling to hear it from his mouth. She slumped down on the couch, defeated as silent tears continuously rolled down her cheeks, one of the servants brought her some handkerchiefs while quietly and secretly sniffing. At least some people in this place genuinely loved and cared for her.
It was embarrassing and pathetic for her to think that way, but she could care less at the moment. She was just happy that Bruni Marchetti's father had gone on her long walk around the estate with his mother and sister. His mother and sister had never liked Ariana, claiming she was occupying the magpie's nest but his father genuinely doted on her a lot.
He was the only reason why Ariana was able to endure so much in this family. The man before her remained emotionless, expressionless, nothing tickling in his heart for her despite knowing that she actually loved him. He cared more about the woman who nearly made him face the biggest humiliation of his life than whatever Ariana felt for him.
“So, this is it?” Ariana covered her face with her hands, wiping a lone tear that had stubbornly rolled out of her eyes and down her cheeks and feeling like a complete loser, an utter fool for her actions six months ago. Quinn had the man she loved but still came back to her fiance whom she had never loved.
Ariana wanted to investigate the matter thoroughly to help her understand why Quinn had come back and her return was too timely but then again, this man had never felt anything for her all this months, making it all an unworthy battle to fight. The pain in her heart was just too much to bear.
“No, it's not the end yet. You will have half of everything I own including the estate just like you deserve. Consider this as your reward for being a good wife all this months, but it’s rather unfortunate that things were not meant to work out between us. I already signed my part of the divorce agreement. Add your signature, and it'll be completely legal.”
Bruni Marchetti was hasty, even anxious to get rid of her as soon as possible so he could bring his beloved woman home. More tears brimmed in the back of Ariana's eyes but she forcefully blinked them back.
Bruni Marchetti has always been on the move, desperately looking for a woman who didn't want him. Consequently leading to the current situation as she was never given the time to work on this marriage with him and now it was all coming to an end and she felt her world crumbling around her, the pain too severe as a bitter taste formed at the back of her throat.
She felt weak and defeated as it finally started downing on her that she never stood a chance in replacing that woman in his heart, infact, she could argue that he had never taken her seriously from the very beginning.
She Ariana Grasso, the only and most beloved daughter of Antonelli Grasso had lowered her head to humbly love Bruni Marchetti but in his heart, she could never compare to the woman in his heart.
She was the number one beauty in New York yet back here, she had made herself look like some ugly, unattractive woman just because she wanted a man's love when her suitors were uncountable wherever she went but it was okay. She would not let this break her but she just needed a day to grieve the loss before she became strong again.
