Chapter 1: The Unfortunate Comment
The scent of freshly brewed coffee mixed with the faint aroma of old paper as Emma Sinclair placed a stack of books onto the display table. It was a quiet afternoon at Seaside Reads, the small-town bookstore she had inherited from her grandmother. The bell above the door jingled, but Emma barely looked up. Probably Mrs. Lawson coming in for her weekly romance novel.
“Emma, you need to see this.”
Emma turned to see her best friend, Lily, storming in with her phone clutched in her hand.
“See what?” Emma asked, adjusting a book on the shelf.
“This.” Lily shoved the phone in her face.
A video played on the screen. The setting was familiar—the town’s only coffee shop, where Emma had been just the day before. The video was grainy, clearly taken without her knowledge, but her voice was unmistakable.
“I don’t see what the big deal is,” Emma’s voice rang out. “Aiden Carter? Overrated. Probably full of himself, too.”
Emma felt her stomach drop.
Lily snatched the phone back. “Do you know how many views this has? Half a million! People are freaking out.”
Emma blinked. “Half a million?”
“Yes! Some fan posted it, and now it’s everywhere. Aiden Carter’s fans are furious. They’re saying you insulted their beloved ‘Hollywood King.’”
Emma groaned, rubbing her temples. She barely even remembered making the comment—it had been an offhand remark during a conversation about movies. Who knew someone was secretly recording?
“I didn’t even say anything that bad.”
Lily gave her a look. “You called the most famous actor in the world overrated and full of himself. Trust me, the internet disagrees.”
Emma sighed. “Great. Just great.”
As if on cue, the bookstore’s phone rang. She hesitated before answering.
“Seaside Reads, this is Emma.”
“Emma Sinclair?” A woman’s voice came through the line, sharp and professional.
“Uh, yes?”
“This is Danielle Pierce, Aiden Carter’s publicist.”
Emma nearly dropped the phone.
“Aiden saw the video, and he’d like to meet you.”
Emma’s heart stopped. “Wait—what?”
Lily gasped, overhearing the conversation.
“Yes,” Danielle continued, sounding far too amused for Emma’s liking. “He’s interested in visiting your bookstore. Think of it as a…PR opportunity.”
Emma’s mind raced. This had to be a joke. The Aiden Carter? The same actor who starred in every blockbuster romance film? Why would he come here, of all places?
“I…don’t think that’s necessary,” Emma stammered. “It was just a small comment—”
“He insists,” Danielle interrupted. “He’ll be there tomorrow.”
Tomorrow?!
Before Emma could protest, the line went dead. She slowly placed the phone down, staring blankly ahead.
Lily grinned. “Well, looks like you just got yourself a visit from Hollywood royalty.”
Emma groaned, covering her face with her hands.
What had she just gotten herself into?
