Chapter 48: Drifting
We laughed inside the cottage’s small kitchen, enjoying the day and the post-traumatic event of almost losing Colby that afternoon in the caves. Honestly, maybe Colby should have been sent to his room to think about his actions, pondering running off and scaring his father and me, but Dugan didn’t want to end the weekend that way, adding hardship to his kid’s life.
Dugan, still upset about losing Caleb that afternoon, thought it best to get back to the city, even if we were having fun together. After we finished our sugary treat, we packed our bags, placing them in the back of the Pilot. Then we told the cottage goodbye.
Colby gave the place a wave and said, “We won’t be away too long.”
Dugan gave his wave and said, “Until we meet again, my old friend.”
