“Drink it or get fired! It's your choice.” his heartless words left me in confusion. Was he trying to mock me for what I did?
Those words were enough to halt me and send shivers down my spine.
I quickly walked towards the table and reluctantly drank the entire contents of the cup. Once the bitter coffee touched my tastebuds, I could hear them screaming for help. What was this weird torture? I could not understand.
I drank it in a fast pace to get it over with and started coughing as a result of that.
Mr Grayson couldn’t care less about my inconvenience. He just stood there with a smirk across his face.
I got up when he opened a draw from a filing cabinet and handed me two thick black files that I struggled to lift. It felt like I was holding weights. I was very nervous once I found out that I had to be studying these exact files for tomorrow’s meetings.
Why did I ever think this job would be easy? Mr Grayson had the capability to make my life hell. His home wasn’t any different from mine but it was even worse as his mom and himself reminded me of Katie.
He walked pass me without uttering a word... his glaring eyes went past me. As he opened the door to walk away he turned his view to me and said, “Read the files properly.... and, call me sir from now... it will be more fitting.!”
With that being said, he marched away and closed the door behind him, leaving me alone in the study room. The tense energy left the room along with him.
My wobbly hands dropped the hefty files onto the table with a loud thud. I wiped the sweat off my forehead and sat myself onto the office chair. The stress I was taking in from Mr. Grayson was taking my head for a spin.
I rested my face on top of the files as I was too exhausted from all the events that happened in the morning and it wasn’t even noon! I was mostly confused as to why we are at Mr. Arrogant’s house instead of his office. What tricks does he have up his sleeve this time? I was not prepared to deal with any more situations.
My hand turned over the file, allowing me to glance over the detailed pages contained inside the file. My mind was about to explode with the huge amount of information that I had to study.
I wanted to feel blessed for being able to work for a billionaire but this was pure torture.
I wanted to curse Katie so much but I didn’t because to pay off the debt, it was either me enslaving myself in the restaurant with minimum wage or dealing with an arrogant boss and earning a decent income.
I was thankful though as that nasty coffee drove my sleep away and I was ready to take on the challenge and study these massive files.
The files contained the terms, conditions, structure and finance of the company and based on all that information, I was expected to revise their contract and co-ordinate with the company if Mr Arrogant did not agree with any point.
All these business terms scrambled my brain, I swear waiting tables was a billion times easier.
After a whopping four hours of revising the files, I was almost done.
However, my eyes started tearing up and I was starting to breakdown as this information was too much for me to handle.
I felt like I couldn’t do this anymore but I kept telling myself otherwise to keep myself going!
Quitting on the first day of the job was not the option I ever wanted to take, especially since a lot was at stake. Subsequent to finishing the entire files and revising the important pages, my stomach was growing like a pack of wolves that didn’t eat for a week!
I was starving and I really needed some food to build up some energy to get me through the day. I got up from the chair, feeling miserable and left the study room. As I stepped foot outside the room, my eye did not catch it in time but I bumped into someone who was walking along my path. Both of us, fell flat onto the floor. Mye eyes squinted due to the sharp pain of the impact.
When my eyes opened, I realised that I had bumped into Mia accidentally!
The books and files that she carried in her hands spilled all over the floor.
I applied pressure to my elbow that got hurt during the impact with the marbled floor.
“What the hell? Do you have eyes?” she rebuked in anger while massaging a spot on her head that got hurt during the impact.
My heart was beating out of my chest. I apologised like a dozen times but Mia didn’t seem to accept or even recognise any of them. I wonder why she was so angry with me. I mean, it was my fault but come on, I was studying a billion pages with no food in my system.
“What’s all this commotion?” Mr Grayson appeared suddenly which added to my misery.
I stepped forward trying to explain the situation in a calm collective manner with context but I was pushed aside by Mia who started complaining like a three year old!
“Mr Grayson, your new employee doesn’t seem to be having great eyesight. She ran into me and dropped me to the floor! Just look my injuries! It may be on purpose too!” she exaggerated while showing her arms to Mr Grayson, claiming they were bruised.
I personally did not see anything and I felt she was blowing this way out of proportion. And excuse me, what? On purpose? I barely met her and she thought I was out to get her.
I never felt so tired in my life. First, I had Mr Arrogant and now a drama queen? The house truly felt as if it was filled with crazy people.
Even though I had so much to say, I kept quiet and lowered my head in shame. I could not jeopardise my job at any cost. So, I felt it was best not to respond.
“Listen, whatever issues the both of you have with each other, I don’t care! I want work done around here, not have some petty fights.”
Well, boy was I glad to keep my mouth shut. I needed to avoid unnecessary trouble as this is not the first time I pissed Mr Grayson off. I’m seriously surprised that he didn’t fire me again.
Mia glared at me before scoffing and leaving the area without even picking the books that had slipped from her hand.
“Oh, and pick those books at once!” Mr Grayson ordered as he proceeded to head downstairs.
“But Sir-“ I tried to mention that those books weren’t mine to begin with but he interrupted.
“Because of you, those are on the floor, so you’ll be the one to pick them up!” he clarified and displayed an annoyed look.
I squinted as he left and sighed. I couldn’t believe this was day one of my job.
I obediently grabbed all the books and placed them neatly in the book shelf in the study room.
Looking at the books on the bookshelf not placed in alphabetical order triggered an old habit of mine to arrange them properly.
My mother ingrained this habit in me and I never left it till this day. I was glad to have a part of her in me.
It didn’t take long before I placed the final book in the ‘Z’ column of the shelf. It felt so satisfying to do so like placing a cherry on top of a decorated cake.
It also didn’t long before I heard Mr Arrogant to scream my name from afar. The door of the study room which was left opened by me allowed his nasty voice to enter the room.
I rushed downstairs as quickly as I could, only to find him gathering the employees in the centre of the living room.
I just stared at the group in confusion and wondered what was going to happen next.
A series of questions like “Did I do something wrong? and “What did I do this time?” revolved around my mind and I was quite nervous.
What now?
