Chapter 6: Desires at Dawn When midnight came, reality returned with the kind of silence that feels louder than sound. Jordan was asleep beside me, and I lay awake staring into the dark, listening to the small sounds of the room and the deeper sound of my own conscience breaking apart. What had started as attraction had become something that could no longer be called innocent. I knew it. I felt it. And still, I had no idea how to stop it. Guilt sat on my chest like a heavy stone. I looked at Jordan lying there peacefully, and I felt the terrible contradiction of the moment. He looked soft in sleep, almost vulnerable, and the sight of him made my feelings twist even more. How could someone feel so right and so wrong at the same time? At dawn, I slipped quietly out of bed and went to take a shower, hoping water might wash away some of the guilt. It did not. By the time I returned, Jordan was still asleep, and the morning light made the whole room look gentler than my thoughts felt. I went to the kitchen and made breakfast. When I came back to wake him, his hair was tousled and his face looked softer in the morning light. He smiled at me with that same charm that had undone me from the beginning, and for a moment I almost forgot everything except the warmth between us. We ate breakfast together in a quiet, intimate way, the kind of quiet that can feel more personal than conversation. Then it was time for me to get ready for my lecture. Jordan decided to go with me partway. Walking with him under the morning sun felt strangely natural, almost as if we were already living inside a life we had not earned yet. We exchanged a sweet goodbye kiss on campus, and even that small moment was enough to leave my heart unsettled for the rest of the day. In class, I could barely concentrate. My mind kept replaying the night over and over again, turning every look and touch into something brighter and more dangerous. I kept imagining what Smolly would say if I told her everything. I kept wondering how Caleb would sound if he knew. I kept asking myself whether I was falling in love, or falling apart. After the lecture, I met Smolly at the campus café. She noticed immediately that something was different. “Hey, babe,” I said nervously. “Hey, friend,” she replied, studying my face. “You seem different today. What’s going on?” I hesitated, then leaned in and began telling her everything. The supermarket. Jordan. The dinner. The ice cream. The kiss. Her reaction changed slowly as I spoke, moving from surprise to shock to deep, thoughtful concern. When I finally confessed that I felt I had betrayed Caleb, Smolly did not interrupt me. She let me finish. Then she said, very calmly, “Julian, what you’re going through is complicated, and it’s okay to have conflicting emotions. Love isn’t always straightforward.” Her words brought a strange relief. She continued, “But you need to be honest with yourself. And you need to be honest with Caleb. He deserves the truth.” I looked down at the table. “You’re right,” I admitted quietly. “I don’t want to hide anything from him.” Smolly gave me a small reassuring smile. “And remember, I’m here no matter what path you choose.” I left the café feeling both lighter and heavier at the same time. Lighter because I had confessed something. Heavier because confession did not solve anything. Then my phone rang. It was Caleb. “Hello, love,” I answered carefully. “Are you okay?” he asked. “I just wanted to check if you managed to submit the assignment you were working on last night.” The lie formed on my tongue before I could stop it. “Yes,” I said. “I submitted it. Everything went smoothly. I was just panicking for no reason.” His voice softened. “That’s good to hear. You’ve been working so hard lately.” His kindness made me feel awful. He told me he missed me. I told him I missed him too. We spoke as if nothing had happened, and that was the cruelest part of all. His love remained steady while mine had become complicated. Then, as if the universe wanted to push me closer to disaster, I heard another call waiting. Jordan. My heart jumped. I told Caleb I had another call coming in and needed to call him back later. He agreed, though his voice carried a hint of disappointment. Then I switched over to Jordan’s call, my pulse racing as if I had just stepped too close to a cliff edge. And that is where this chapter closes, not with peace, but with the sound of two lives pulling me in opposite directions. Jordan had entered my world as a stranger, but now he had become the beginning of a secret I was no longer certain I could carry.
