Chapter 1
Lara Boom trudged through the misty streets of Tenebrous, her feet ached from the long day she had. She worked at the local bar. The dim glow of the streetlights cast eerie shadows on the pavement, and the fog swirled around her, making her feel like she was walking through a damp, grey mist. This was her path every day after work.
At 22, Lara had grown accustomed to the monotony of her life. Her days blended together in an endless cycle of work, sleep, and occasional socializing with her two closest friends, Lyra and Aria. She had never ventured far from the safety of her routine, content to live in the shadow of her past.
As she turned the corner onto her street, the warm glow of Arachne's little duplex beckoned her home. Arachne, a woman in her 40s with a kind face and piercing green eyes, had taken Lara in as a teenager, providing her with a sense of stability and belonging.
"Lara, dear, how was your day?" Arachne asked, as Lara entered the cottage, she heard the crackling of the firewood. The cottage felt warm.
She forced a smile, not wanting to burden Arachne with her troubles. "It was fine, thanks. Just the usual."
Arachne's eyes narrowed, but she said nothing, instead busying herself with preparing dinner.
Lara contemplated Arachne’s expression. She hoped she didn't figure out that she lied. Arachne had been nothing but loving and caring to her. She would hate to lie to her, but she had to. She wasn't used to sharing her problems. Maybe if she didn't talk about them, they would go away. Most importantly, she didn't want to trouble the nice lady with her issues.
As they ate, Lara's thoughts wandered to her struggles at work. Kael, her boss, was a nice guy as people have said, yet she hadn't felt that care from him. He was okay with letting her take Emily's shift, but she wasn't allowed to have excuses to miss her shift or come in late. She smiled at Arachne while she chewed on her food. She interrupted her thoughts and decided to be grateful to him for giving her the job. She thought of Emily, the blonde girl helped her out in her own way. She was friendly and lively but they weren't close. Aria was her best friend. She made it easy to work there despite all the issues she faced. She didn’t want to think about the harassment and the insults.
After dinner, Lara retreated to her room, feeling trapped and uncertain about her future. She had always dreamed of more, but her fear of the unknown held her back. As she drifted off to sleep, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something missing in her life, something that she couldn't quite put her finger on.
The next evening, Lara's shift at the bar dragged on interminably. As the night wore on, the patrons grew rowdier, and Lara's anxiety spiked. She had always been timid, and the constant harassment from drunk customers took its toll.
“Yo Lara, give me a martini mixed with vodka” Emily's voice distracted her from her thoughts.
“Coming right up” she chirped back
Quickly mixing the Martini and vodka in two glasses. Emily picked it up and carried it to a table where two men and a lady sat. She recognised them and she noticed that one of them was missing.
The place was getting rowdy again, and Kael had fired most of the bouncers, so she and Emily were left to deal with the mess. Aria wasn't working tonight, and she wished she was here.
She gazed around the bar. The dark blue lights didn't make her feel calm, and she felt trapped behind the counter just as she was starting to feel overwhelmed. A commotion erupted near the entrance. A group of rough-looking men had begun harassing a young woman, and the bouncers were struggling to intervene.
In the chaos, Lara's eyes met those of a stranger, a tall, handsome man with piercing brown eyes and chiselled features. He was standing at the edge of the crowd, his gaze fixed intently on her.
As the stranger began to make his way toward her, Lara felt an inexplicable jolt of electricity run through her veins. Before she could process what was happening, he had reached her side, his eyes locked on hers.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his deep voice low and soothing.
Lara nodded, still feeling dazed. "Y-yes, thanks."
The stranger's gaze lingered on hers for a moment; she could swear his pupils were red before he turned to face the harassers. With a few swift movements, he dodged the punches coming his way and knocked all of them out. The bouncers took them out of the bar.
As the stranger turned to leave, Lara called out to him. "W-wait!"
He turned back to her, a hint of a smile on his lips. "Yes?"
Lara's heart skipped a beat as their eyes met again. "Thank you... for helping me."
The stranger's smile deepened, and he nodded before disappearing into the night.
Lara watched him go, feeling a sense of wonder that she hadn't experienced in years. Who was this mysterious stranger, and why did she feel like she had known him her whole life?
As she returned to her duties, Lara couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change in ways she couldn't imagine.
Just then, the missing man from the trio walked in.
“Hey one bottle of brandy please” he called out to her. He was dressed in a blue suit and white shirt. His two shirt buttons were opened
“Here you are” she stretched out hands holding the tray for him to pick up his glass. He took a sip and smiled “long day?” she asked
“You have no idea, Lara. I am so tired”
“Or maybe you missed me” She joked
“Just maybe, you okay, no issues with work”
“There was, but it has been sorted”
The guy across from her still had a scowl on his face “Maybe you should think of quitting” he suggested.
“Yeah maybe I should Val” she considered it, but they both knew. She wasn't going to find a good paying job out there, and she was well paid here, and she couldn't just quit and leave Arachne to figure out the bills
He looked around and asked “Where are Jack and the gang?”
“Over there by the corner” she pointed
“Thanks Lara” he smiled
She smiled at him. Valentine had offered her a job in his shipping company, but she didn't want to overstep his kindness.
It was almost 10pm, Emily had gone and begged her to cover her shift. A guy dressed in jeans and a T-shirt approached the counter. There were a few people left, and he came with a sinister gaze licking his lips.
“Hey, you mind serving me a drink and your number” His hands rested on the countertop
“What kind of drink would you like sir” she answered politely, her fingers fiddling with each other
“A glass of wine maybe” he stared at her, but her gaze was on the flat surface
“What type” she asked, squeezing her apron at the sides
“The one that is as red as your lips”
She stopped clenching her apron and found the red wine bottle, opened it, and served him in a glass.
His wrist grabbed her elbows and stroked all the way down to her fingers, collecting the glass from the tray and sipping it. While licking his lips. His gaze was focused on her lip. She noticed a tattoo on his wrist. The side close to his palms.
From that moment on, he ordered random drinks like a glass of gin and tonic and caressed her hands. She jerked back each time, squeaking at him to stop his antics, but his smile turned darker each time. One moment, his glass fell on the floor, and she left the counter and bent beside him to clean up the glass . Immediately, the guy took the opportunity to hold her waist and squeeze her left butt cheek. Tears spilled from her eyes, and in one moment, the guy was screaming in pain, and a hand went to her waist. She felt her body being pressed against his. It was Val. After that, the bouncer escorted the guy out. He glanced back at her, and she shuddered at his expression
Val's eyes were on her. He asked her how she was. She thanked him for his help, and he walked her home, leaving his buddies behind
