Chapter 24

Skye

I don’t know exactly what happened with Ryan and Parker three days ago, but they are acting… odd.

They’re training right now and I’m playing outside with AJ and Jasper. Even AJ seems to notice the difference in them though. He says that their hearts are pinker than they were, and that Parker has some orange around her head. Jasper excuses himself to go help Ava with something and AJ turns to me with a big smile and I say, “What’s up, kid?”

He smirks and asks, “When will you help me with my mom and RyRy?”

I roll my eyes and say, “AJ…”

He huffs, “They’re hearts are pinker than they used to be Skye. They like each other they’re just too scared to do anything about it.”

God, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything so true.

I open my mouth to respond when I hear the hatch open up and Emma’s voice rings out, “They’re here!”

I snap my head back and see the panic in her face and know that what we’ve been scared of is happening again. I don’t hesitate to grab AJ and rush him over to Emma who takes him immediately and goes back into the bunker.

Jasper and Ava come from behind me and start to get in and Jasper looks at me and asks, “What are you doing, Skye?”

“Where’s Parker and Ryan?”

He shakes his head, “It doesn’t matter get in here.”

“It does matter, Jasper. Where did they go?”

Tom comes up from behind me and says, “They’re going to lead the Aberrations in the wrong direction. Our job is to stay hidden and keep AJ safe.”

“I want to help.” I say adamantly.

Tom sighs and puts his hands on my shoulders and says, “I know. But the more there are of us the more suspicious it looks, Skye. On top of that think of AJ without Parker and Ryan here he is going to feel petrified. He is attached to you, Skye. Could you stay here, for him? Please?”

I look back at the woods and I can feel my powers itching to the surface, desperate to go fight.

But Tom is right… I’m needed here.

I nod and follow him into the bunker.

I go to AJ and pick him up as he hugs me, and I watch as they close and lock the hatch.

Ryan

I think Parker and I have been doing a pretty good job at keeping our relationship on the down low. No one other than Skye has made any comments about us.

Right now, we’re sparring without using our powers, but suddenly we hear the words that makes my blood boil.

Emma’s voice yelling, “They’re here!”

I look at Parker first as her face pales and she turns to go towards AJ, but she stops when she sees that Skye already has him taken care of. I see her shoulders relax seeing that he is already tended to. She turns towards me and asks, “You ready?”

I nod, “After you.”

She walks towards Tom to let him know we’re going to lead them away from here and Tom nods in understanding before going towards the bunker.

Parker takes off and I run after her. We need to make it look like we’re together and that we’re panicking trying to figure out how to stay hidden.

I fall to the ground hearing a piercing ringing sound that just makes it impossible to move forward. I look towards Parker and her face is scrunched up in pain, but I see her holding her hand out and I know she’s trying to stop the sound. I try my hardest to come towards her and suddenly the sound is gone and Parker gasps as she fully falls to the ground. I rush towards her and she mutters, “I’m fine. Help me get up, we need to keep moving.”

I nod and get her up and ask, “What exactly did you do?”

She smirks, “I pushed that sound back to them. Whoever has that ability is a d**k and I hope they enjoyed getting a taste of their own medicine.”

I can’t help but laugh and we keep running and we have to be at least 2 miles away from the bunker by now.

Everything happens so fast.

I’m tackled to the ground by someone with some damn incredible strength and when I finally get him off of me Parker is gone. The guy looks back at me smirking and I punch him as I yell, “Where is she?!”

He smiles at me, “She won’t be found again.”

I don’t hesitate to kill him after he says that, and I snap his neck I leave his body dead on the ground. I know we’ll come out late to clean up the mess later. Right now, I only have one goal- find Parker.

Before I can even move though I find myself fully surrounded by Aberrations. I breathe out slowly trying to keep myself calm. I have to remain calm if I want to be able to think of the right way to get out of this situation.

They all rush towards me at the same time.

I dodge the first person, but the second one pins me down and soon they are all just wailing on me. I’m unable to get into anyone’s head it’s like a wall is blocking me from doing it. I try my hardest to push through and fight back, but I’m outnumbered, and I fear what’s happening to Parker now if this is what is happening to me.

I’m fighting my best to even make a connection with someone on our side to say I need help, but I’m unable to connect with anyone.

Black spots fill my vision and I know I can’t fight for much longer.
