The atmosphere of the circus was different when the great tent was empty. Without its chattering, enthusiastic audience the tent seemed barren, as if it had been abandoned for much longer than a mere few minutes. Empty space stretched ahead of him and the ceiling yawned somewhere above, its confines lost in darkness. The riotous music and applause had faded away into silence.
