CHAPTER TWO
REINA'S POV
I couldn't stop myself. I had to protect my parents, especially my dad, even if it cost me my life.
“Wait,” I said softly as I came out of my hiding place and I could see that they were both extremely shocked to see me there.
“How long have you been there?” Dad asked and I played with my fingers nervously as I immediately got on my knees.
“Forgive me, Father but I overheard everything you and Mom said. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, I just-”
“It's fine. Get up.” Mom said and my eyes widened in surprise. I hesitated for a moment before getting back up, my eyes fixed on the ground as I summoned the courage to speak.
“Father, Mother, if I heard everything correctly, Mr Robert wants me in exchange for the ten thousand dollars you owe him, am I right?” I asked softly, and there was silence for a moment before Dad let out a sigh and hummed in response.
“Don't worry, this has nothing to do with you. I'll handle it my own way.” He replied as he patted my shoulder for the first time in a long time and my eyes got teary.
“Father, if he's someone dangerous, then it'll be a bad idea to try to confront him or his decisions. I know we don't have such an amount of money and I don't want anything to happen to you, so… I've made up my mind. I'll go to Mr Robert instead.” I said firmly, my heart pounding in my chest at the crazy decision I just made.
But it'll all be worth it just to make them proud of me. I would gladly do anything just to see them look at me with love and not contempt.
“What? No, that's a stupid idea! I won't let that happen!” Dad retorted but I shook my head as I got on my knees again and held his feet, my expression firm and unwavering.
“Let me do this for you, father. Whenever you have the money to pay back, you can always come to take me back, right? I'd rather live as a slave than watch you die.” I said defiantly and I heard him sigh as he pulled me up, an emotional expression on his face.
“You don't have to do this, Reina.”
“But I want to, Father. Please let me save your life.”
He stared at me for a while before nodding and pulling me for a hug. My heart soared in my chest as I hugged my father and I knew I had just made the best decision. My eyes caught sight of Selina standing by the hallway, and she looked at me like I was a pest that she desperately wanted to get rid of.
“Thank you, Reina,” Dad said as he pulled away and I smiled softly.
“Promise me, Father, that you'll come get me out of there soon.”
“I promise. Just give me one month!” He promised and I smiled happily before stepping backward and bowing gently.
“We'll get you out of there soon, Reina. Trust us. Though we might seem like the worst parents, we would never abandon you in the hands of a stranger.” My Mom chipped in and I smiled again when I saw how they gazed at me with affection.
“I won't let you down. I'll go pack my things.”
I immediately turned around and headed for the basement where I began to pack the little belongings I had.
The basement door suddenly swung open and I turned around to see Selina walk inside with a look of disgust on her face.
“I've always known you were stupid, but I didn't know you were this naive and stupid.” She muttered and I narrowed my eyes at her in response.
“Are you jealous that I got Mom and Dad's attention now?” I replied as I continued to pack and she stepped forward in anger.
“You- I don't blame you; after all, you've devoted your life to being a slave in this house; it wouldn't hurt to do the same in someone else's house, right?” She mocked and I clenched my fists in anger at her words.
“I don't care what you do with your life, Reina. Just be careful so you don't get killed. I heard Mr. Robert was very strict and… merciless. No worker lasted more than two months there.” She explained and I let out a scoff of amusement.
“Two months? Dad promised he'd get me out in a month. So why do I have to worry?”
“Oh, you're so so gullible, Reina. But fine, whatever floats your boat, dear sister. Just came to warn you.” She said as she walked out of the basement and I let out a sigh of frustration.
“Did you all think I was so foolish? The sudden change in attitude, how would I be so naive to ignore that?” I said to myself as I continued to pack my things.
I knew this was their plan to sell me out and throw me out of their lives. But what if the life over there was better than here? What if I got the chance to escape and be free?
I wasn't just leaving to save their asses from being tortured; I could call this an act of service, considering that they raised me till this day; I owed them that. I was leaving so that I could find freedom.
Maybe I could find a billionaire who would save me from my predicaments and fall madly in love with me. All of that could only happen if I left this house.
A sneeze ripped out of me painfully and I held my nose in pain as I sat on the iron bed. I sniffed and I realized that I had caught a cold already.
How frustrating.
As I laid my head to try to get some sleep, the basement door barged open and I sat up immediately to see my dad standing at the door.
“Reina, they're here,” Dad said nervously and I frowned as I got up and approached him.
“Who's here?” I asked in confusion as I sneezed again and I heard Selina scoff from behind him.
“Mr. Robert's men.” She said as she came in and my dad squeezed my shoulder gently before he left, leaving only me and Selina in the room.
“I'm sure you're happy I'm leaving,” I mumbled as I took my small luggage and moved to walk past her when she held my arm.
“Have fun taking my place.” She whispered, then pulled away with a wide grin and left the room.
What did she mean by that?
