CHAPTER THREE

CHAPTER THREE REINA'S POV I was escorted into a vehicle by bulky men who were all dressed in black. I turned to look at my family, and they had sad expressions on their faces as the car moved, but I knew that the moment this car left the compound, they would be having a feast for my departure. The men in black looked scary so I dared not make any stupid move or say something stupid lest they end my life immediately. The journey was longer than I expected and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep. I felt something poke my head and I finally opened my eyes to see a gun pointed to my head and a man glaring at me like I was his sworn enemy. “Had enough rest, sleeping beauty? Get off!” He ordered, and I immediately scrambled out of the car and got out. I turned to look at the destination where we stopped and my jaw dropped when I caught sight of the mansion in front of me. This was my new prison? It didn't look so bad, it felt like I just had an upgrade. “Move it!” The glaring man from earlier bumped against my shoulder and started walking inside the house while I followed him like a lost puppy. “Listen to me and listen carefully.” He started and I immediately rushed closer to him so that I could hear what he was saying clearly. “Only do what you're told. Don't try to please anyone here, you'll suffer if you try. Learn to mind your business. Don't speak when you weren't asked, don't say more than you're asked, always keep your head down. If you do that, you'll be fine.” He explained and I immediately nodded in understanding. “Thank you, Sir,” I mumbled, and he suddenly stopped, causing me to bump into him. I realized what I did and immediately got on my knees to apologize for being distracted. “Get up, why are you kneeling to a common subordinate like me? Call me Michael. Everyone here calls each other by their names.” He helped me get up and I nodded in response before raising my head to look at him. “I'm Reina.” I introduced myself and he looked over my figure before clicking his tongue and continued walking. “You look very young. Roughly eighteen or nineteen, am I right?” “I'm nineteen, sir- I mean, Michael,” I replied and he shook his head in disapproval. “Your parents are beasts to sell someone as young as you for money.” He replied and I stopped in my tracks as I looked up at him in confusion. “What do you mean sell? My parents had debts to pay so I'm here to work until they can pay it back.” “Is that what they told you? Wow, I'm impressed. You're stuck here forever, Reina. Your parents knew that they couldn't afford to pay their debts so they suggested selling you off in exchange for the money.” He explained with a small smile on his face as he shook his head and I stumbled back gently, my head spinning with this information. They tricked me. I was expecting this, but I didn't expect them to be so heartless. They offered to sell me off on their own. “How do you know this?” I asked. “Me? I'm the assistant to the head of the house. I was present when they made the deal. Although… I wasn't expecting him to send you instead of your sister, Selina.” “What do you mean?” “My boss wanted your sister, Selina. Your father agreed, but given the fact that you're here, I'm guessing you're the abandoned child, and Selina is the favorite.” He stated plainly and I let out a sigh of defeat. He was right… I was the abandoned one. “Here's your quarter. I'll be back to get you once you're needed. Remember, don't walk around aimlessly, and don't go searching for what's not missing.” He opened the door to a small room and when I walked in, I smiled to myself. At least it was better than that basement. “Thank you, Michael,” I said as I smiled at him and he bowed slightly before locking the door, leaving me all alone in the small yet decent room. Just as Michael had told me, Mr Robert wasn't happy to know that I was the one sent instead of my sister but to my surprise, he let me stay and didn't make a fuss about it. I started to work at Mr Robert's mansion as a maid and honestly, it was better than my house. Mr Robert wasn't nice, but he wasn't harsh either. Unfortunately, Mr Robert's wife, Sharon was hellbent on making my life a living hell. Her son, Alexander, the spoiled brat, didn't make it any better at all. They'd make me do the tiniest of things and if I didn't do it right, they punish me endlessly and even starve me for days. The friends I had made with the other maids usually helped me sneak food in, but the workload became too much for me. I was forced to clean Alexander's room thrice a day like he was some kind of prince, while I had to cook different meals for Sharon every hour. I wondered how she hadn't blown up with how much she eats. The days were long and stressful but at night, it was peaceful. I got to spend time with Michael and other workers like me and for the first time, I felt like I was around people that cherished me and loved me for who I was. The security in the house was extremely strict; men were always patrolling with big guns, and I couldn't help but wonder what it was like to live in a mafia world. I was just waking up when someone banged on my door hard, causing me to panic. I pulled open the door to see Michael standing outside with a worried expression. “Get ready in five minutes. The boss's son is coming home today.” “Who? Alexander?” I asked in confusion and he shook his head firmly before leaning in to whisper to me. “His first son, Eugene. Hurry up, you don't want to be punished by him.” He explained and I nodded in understanding as I rushed back in to quickly change and then head to the mansion. I had just entered the mansion when I met Sharon and as usual, she was not happy to see me. “Go make me tea and bring it to my garden.” She spat as she walked past me and I could feel that she was angrier than usual. Was it because of this Eugene? I immediately went to make her tea, and just as I was heading out with it, the door was pulled open, and I stumbled, causing the teacup to fall off my hand. I looked up in horror to see the tea splash over someone's expensive clothes and when I looked up at who he was, I realized I had never seen him before. He must be- “Are you blind?” He yelled in anger as he smacked me hard, and suddenly, the world went blank.
