Theo parked his bicycle in the garage and moved inside. The weather in Brighton is a very good one compared to Scotland.
He has missed all his friends tho but he's still in contact with them. Michigan is amazing and he loved it. It was always cold in Scotland and he couldn't go out most of the time.
"The king is home", he screamed
He knew his sister was home and not at work today.
"Tell that king to shut up and drag his ass over here", his sister shouted from the kitchen
Theo thought she has come to know about the cookies
Initially he wanted to run to his room but he has to face her anyways. He entered the kitchen and the sweet aroma that hit him was amazing.
He immediately knew his sister was cooking jollof, he liked it very much. His sister, Reign, had a boyfriend from Africa back in college who taught her how to cook various African dishes but jollof was his favorite.
The guy in question left back to Africa and Reign hasn't heard from him again. She always spoke highly of him. Of how he changed her life in so many ways. Theo knew his sister loved him and he always prayed this guy would come back to her.
"How're you doing", Reign asked as Theo entered the kitchen
"I'm doing fine actually. I just experienced a small headache after school. But I'm good anyways", Theo responded
"Is mum still not back?", Theo asked opening the fridge. He poured himself a glass of apple cider and raised his eyebrows to ask Reign if she wanted a glass too.
Reign shook her head went back to cutting the carrots.
"Don't act like you didn't hear what I said", Theo asked staring blankly at his sister
Reign went on cutting the carrots like nothing was going on. It took some time before she responded
"An emergency came up so mum had to fly to Chicago. She was supposed to come today you know. But things didn't go according to plan. I believe she'll be here by next week", Reign explained
Theo shrugged his shoulders and smiled
"She's never home and doesn't care. I don't know why you're trying to defend her"
"I'm not trying to defend mum", Reign went on
Reign stopped whatever she was doing. She turned on the sink tap and washed her hands. She took the napkin lying on the table and wiped her hands dry. She moved closer to Theo and sat down facing him directly.
"Hey mum is doing her best for us. Just look around us. Look at the expensive house we just moved into. Mum is doing her possible best to make sure we lack nothing at all. Don't you get everything you want? Look at me now I'm done with college and supposed to be working right?"
Theo just sat there looking at his sister
"But since I haven't found a job yet mum still cares for me. I'm even sure if I finally get a job, hopefully soon, she will still do what she does regardless. Mum does her best for us. We are all she has and she is all we've got. Don't get angry with her please. I know she doesn't spend time with us but let's compromise. Her company will open a firm in these parts soon. She'll work near home and spend more time with us", Reign explained
Theo knew whatever her sister was saying was the truth. This wasn't how things used to be in Scotland. Mum was always there. He has just grown used to his mum always being around. So the fact that mum now didn't spend more time with them was driving him crazy.
Reign hugged Theo and they stayed together like that for sometime.
Reign went back to cooking and Theo opened the fridge again. This time around, he took cheese and secretly hid it from his sister. But Reign saw it too quickly
"How many times do you want me to tell you to cut down on your cheese eating habit? It's not the best for you", Reign asked as she placed her hands on her hips in feign anger
Theo raised his hands in surrender and sat down to enjoy his cheese. Margaret moved to the fridge to pour herself some juice. Immediately Theo knew what was coming. He took his bag and ran upstairs laughing all the way as he climbed the stairs. He closed his door and waited.
It wasn't long and the shout echoed through the whole house.
"Who took my cookies?", he heard Reign shouting and screaming his name.
