PROLOGUE: THE TAROT READER'S PROPHECY
~Indelicato~ I woke up to my best friends going crazy on my bed. Alejandro was jumping right beside my head and Dante, in the space between my legs. "Get up! Get up!" Both of them screamed repeatedly. "What the f**k, guys? You'll seriously injure me." I told them, my voice hoarse from sleep. "Get your a*s up, birthday boy," Alejandro said, still jumping up and down. I moved, trying to get my head away from his legs, and doing this, my bed dipped on Ale's side and he lost his balance. I turned my body around, in order to brace myself from his body but ended up hitting Dante's legs. Everything resulted in me getting hurt. First Ale's head hit my chest and then Dante hit me in the balls. "Ow! f**k!" I said through gritted teeth as both of them doubled up in laughter. "Uh...you can take it as a birthday present, Adrian," Dante said. "Yeah, a gift of not being able to make a girl pregnant. It's a contraceptive measure of a kind." Ale said and Dante burst into laughter. I just chuckled. They do not sound like 17-year-olds at all... Alejandro Bautista has been my best friend since the age of 6. I met him when my dad and his dad, signed a business contract. Dante Mauricio, my cousin, has been living with me since his parent's death, which took place 4 years ago. Both of them, together, constitute a very important part of my life. I threw on a pajama and sat on the bed and they started asking me questions. "So, what are you going to do today?" Dante asked. "Well, I don't know. We'll go out, eat and then we can head together to the gym." I shrugged. "Trash that, what are you asking from Uncle Sev, as a gift?" He asked. "I can't think of anything... I mean, I have everything in my life." "No bro, there is one thing you don't," Ale said, with a shake of his head. "What do you mean?" I asked him. "You don't have a normal life, Adrian." He said. "What is your definition of a normal life?" I asked him, confused. "School." Well, I had nothing to say about that. I have never actually gone to a school. Since I was 4, I have been homeschooled, from the best teachers found in U.S.A I have never stepped foot in a school. You might think why? My dad is the most feared Mafia in the world. Catearo. People fear that name, people bow to it, people praise it. I never asked my dad to let me go to a normal school because I agree with everything he says. "Yes, Adrian, even I want to go to a normal school like Ale, rather than being homeschooled by those fat a*s teachers," Dante said, scowling. "Ask your freedom as a gift, Adrian. Public schools are an experience of a lifetime and you my brother have only one year left to enjoy it." Ale said. "I'll do it." "Happy birthday, Adrian sweetheart." Justice, our housekeeper said, as she kissed my cheek and folded her small and weak body around me. "Thank you, Justice," I said, hugging her back. "Mr. Indelicato has called for you, he is in your lounge." She said and went away. I moved towards the lounge, eager to meet my father. "Good morning, Dad," I said to the man standing beside a huge portrait of my mother on the lounge wall. "Adrian Mathias Indelicato is 18 now." He said. A smile, a very rare part of his life, came up to his face. "Happy birthday, son." "Thank you, dad," I said as I went and hugged him. "Your first gift for today." He handed me a book size gift, and I already knew what it was. I unwrapped it and saw another one of my and my mother's photo. She was kissing my cheek, her eyes twinkling as she stared ahead. She died when I was two. And every year since then, I receive her pictures as a birthday gift from my dad. "Now, what do you want, Mathias?" He asked. My dad, called me Adrian only when he was angry, for the rest of the time I was Mathias for him. "I want to go to..." I still double checked what I wanted to ask. "To Brazil? Sydney? Just tell me, I'll arrange." He said, as he went and sat in a huge armchair. "Err, no...actually, dad...Iwanttogotoaschool." I said and took in a sharp breath. "Calm your nerves son, and ask, I'll never deny." I inhaled and exhaled a few times and finally gathered enough strength to speak. "I...want to go to a school, dad." His eyes snapped to mine and his face grew dark. "Why? I have brought you the best teachers found in and around the U.S.A. Why do you want to go to a school?" He asked. "He wants to experience real life, Catearo." A strong voice boomed through the walls of the lounge. Grandmother. "Ma?" Dad asked, getting up from his armchair. "You can't trap him in his own house, Catearo, he needs to experience life." She said and kept a hand on my shoulder. She was a woman in her mid-sixties, with soft features, which still outshone young women at large. She had a soft voice but when someone angered her, it boomed around, making people cringe. "Ma, I have kept him here for so long, he can stay here for this year too. He can go to college later if he wants." Dad said. "He'll start school from next week. I'll tell Matthew to arrange everything." My grandma said with authority seeping through her decision. "But ma-," Dad said but was cut off. "That'd be enough for today, hijo." She said, glaring at my dad. "Come on, child." She lifted her head to meet my eyes and beckoned me to the door. "Where are you taking him now?" Dad asked, almost whining. "To Paco." "Oh! Well, good luck, son." And Dad actually smirked at me. Who the hell is this Paco? As we came downstairs to the hall, I saw Ale and Dante, relaxing on one of the extravagant sofas. "Hiya, grandma, you promised to take us somewhere." Dante came and stood beside her. "Yes, my darling, let's go. You too Ale." She said, smiling at him. Ale was loved the same way I and Dante were, by grandma. Actually, Ale was the one, who was always showered with kisses. "Where to gran?" Ale asked as he took one her hands into his. "To see what the world holds for you, my child." She said, staring at the double doors of our mansion. "You talk very deep sometimes, grandma," I remarked to which she just smiled. All of us sat into a bulletproof SUV, and a car with 4 bodyguards followed us. We had reached the place after around 30 minutes of traveling in the suburbs along the bank of Detroit river. The place looked pretty run down and old fashioned, with a big board saying 'Paco's Tarot' "What? You brought us to a tarot reader gran? I am going back." Ale grumbled, turning around. But before he could walk away, grandma caught him by ear and dragged him inside not before asking me and Dante to follow. The inside of the shop was decorated with lots of superstitious s**t, like dream catchers, red cloths and much more. We were taken into a large room and grandma ordered the guards to stand outside. "Oh! My dear Manorma, you are back!" A guy around grandma's age sat on the other side of a large table. "Yes Paco, and I have brought along my grandchildren this time," Grandma said while sitting on one of the stools. We imitated her, and sat down on the stools. "Do a reading for them," Grandma ordered. "Okay, I'll start with you, young boy," Paco declared, pointing at me. "Oh...okay,"I said. "Keep your hands on this crystal ball." He ordered. And I did so. It turned into a bright blue color. "Take 'em off." And I did. Paco then took out a deck of cards. "Your date of birth?" He asked. "18th December 1999," I replied. He shuffled the cards and spread them upside down in front of me. "Choose one." I looked at all the unusual purple cards and finally laid a hand on one. Paco picked that card for me and looked at it with curiosity and then closed his eyes. "What is it? Paco? Tell us." Grandma said, clapping her hands together. "The Lovers." He said, very softly. I saw grandma's eyes becoming wide and a smile reappearing on her face. "So?" Ale spoke just as confused as me. "The card says- a temptation of heart. Love is near you, Adrian darling." Paco spoke looking into my eyes. How does he know my name? "That's rubbish," I said. I can never fall in love. There is no girl made for me. I am too good for anyone. "Oh! Shush." Grandma said to me. "Tell me, who is she, Paco?" Paco looked at me again. "You two look at the same sunrise and the same sunset. Every day." His eyes twinkling as he spoke. "You two walk the same streets and hang out at the same places." "Yet oblivious to the fact, that soon you'll cross each other's path, only to realize, how blind you were..." "To not see the missing piece, you were always busy finding." He said and sighed. We walk on the same streets. We'll cross each other's paths. We'll be each others missing piece. That's bullshit! "And that's all I know, Manorma." He said to grandma. "Oh! Paco tell us something more, I know you know more." Grandma urged. "Well, all I can say is, that it would be magical." I was really tired of all this bullshit. "I don't believe in magic," I said curtly. Paco just chuckled. "You will when you see her." You will when you see her. Will I? "Now, you son." Paco turned towards Ale. "Uh...I...Don't." He said but was cut off. "Shut up and do what he says," Grandma told him. "Fine." Ale huffed. Paco asked Ale to do the same as he told me. But when Ale touched the crystal ball, red smog filled it. Grandma gasped and Paco's eyes widened. "What...what is it?" Dante asked, concern lacing his face. Even I was curious to know after all Ale is my best friend. "Take 'em off." And Ale did. "Time of birth?" Paco asked him. "I...I don't know." Ale replied. "Choose a card, then," Paco said. Ale chose a card and Paco turned it. He gave out a sigh of relief. "The Lovers, it is again." "Well, everything is same as Adrian, I am done now." Saying this Ale got up. "No!" Paco spoke. "Sit." And Ale sat down. "It is not the same, not even close to his." "What is it, Paco?" Grandma asked slowly, worry present in her eyes. "For you, it says- a card of hesitation, of a choice to make," Paco spoke, his face grim. "Explain," Dante urged. "Whatever choice you make, son, it should not be made lightly," Paco spoke directly to Ale. "That's it. We are out of here." I said and grabbed both of my best friends. Grandma still sat there. We were at the door when we heard Paco again. "Stop!" We turned and saw both grandma and him standing. Both of them stared at Ale. "Alejandro. Keep. Her. Safe. She'll destroy all evil that'll come your way, even if means, getting destroyed herself." Paco spoke. "And all evil will come because of you, Alejandro. That's what the crystal ball conveyed." Grandma said as a tear slipped down her cheek.
