WINTER
The warm sunshine that streamed through the classroom window did nothing to help my concentration as I sat in class vying to engage in what was being taught.
The teacher's monotonous voice, droning on about some dead men who fought in a battle hundreds of years ago was gradually putting me to sleep.
I feigned writing only to discover I had been nodding off. My eyes snapped open rapidly and I glanced at my notebook.
The last line I had written on the page ends with nonsensical words before it became a straight line that ran off the page. Then I focused on what the teacher was explaining only to learn that he had moved on to another topic.
Mr Jackson, our history teacher, didn't care if what he said got stuck in our brain since he addressed himself rather than the students, leaving the question aspect for later.
Furthermore, anyone who couldn't answer any of his questions would be in detention which didn't make sense to me or anyone in his class. He proceeded to the board after he said something about Benjamin Franklin which I didn't catch.
I emitted a sigh as I scanned the classroom, reckoning I was not the only one bored to tears here.
Just like me, some of the students appeared sedated, slouching in their chairs, a few had their heads down whilst some were dozing.
A kid at my front entertained himself by constantly gnawing on his fingernails. Alyssa, the queen of bitches moved to another seat when the teacher wasn't watching. I spun around and rolled my eyes as I sighted Lee doodling in her book.
The only excitement one could perhaps experience during one hour and twenty minutes of history was the beautiful resonance of the final words "class dismissed" and how I longed for that.
I prefer detention to this s**t hole!
I must have stated my thoughts aloud since Lee and some girls began giggling whilst the others used the opportunity to stretch their aching limbs.
Turning a deep shade of red, I covered my face with both hands.
As the laughter died down, I peered between my fingers to see Mr Jackson glaring dagger at me.
"Well, I'll pretend I did not hear that and ask you a question instead," He sneered. "And no answer means detention!"
I knew that already, I wanted to yell back. It always ended in detentions since his questions were often not answerable.
Lee leaned towards me and she murmured. "Sucks to be you."
Mr Jackson's gaze landed on her, and she began cowering in her seat.
"I heard that Miss Simms," he growled, "And that is detention for you!"
Lee raised her hands and let out an exasperated sigh, "But I didn't do anything!"
Mr Jackson turned a deaf ear to her complaint as he glowered back at me. He felt the back pocket of his drab brown trouser, brought out a piece of paper and stared at it.
Here comes nothing.
"What year did Benjamin Franklin run away from his brother James?" He questioned.
I wanted to reply that it wasn't my business that he ran away but remained silent.
"Um... um... maybe..." I stuttered.
I bit my bottom lip whilst wracking my head to see if I could come up with the answer. However, nothing came up and about to say any random words from my mind, Rey chooses the opportunity to swagger inside the classroom.
Thank goodness for the distraction. And Oh boy, could Rey be any sexier?
"Well nice of you to join us, Mr Leslie." Mr Jackson said, peeking at Rey through the glasses perched on his nose.
Mr Jackson's question vaporized from my mind as I ogled at the pure perfection in front of me.
Rey had the kind of face that stops you in your tracks. A tanned skin that looked almost golden, mesmerizing blue eyes which often reminded me of a cornflower field and which made me, and all the girls weak at the knees.
My fingers tingle to touch his tousled dark brown hair which was thick and lustrous and it often makes It look like he just jolts out of bed and never makes attempts in running a comb through it. He was six feet tall, slim waist, athletic, with an almost perfectly symmetrical face.
Everyone loves Rey.
We were all drawn to him. I could see it in the way they hung on his every word and how they watched him in pure awe.
The history teacher nodded to whatever he had said. Also, I noticed Alyssa, the captain of the Cheer team eyes eating him up and real drools appeared on her lips.
I could be wrong but it looked like it.
Shrugging, I glanced away to look back at the Adonis that stood in front of me.
"Miss James!" I jarred out of my thoughts as I heard my name. The vaporized question now deposited back in my mind.
Despite me stalling, Mr Jackson, however, waited for me to answer. I wondered how long I had been out as Rey, no longer stood in front of me.
"Well, I don't know the answer." I blurted out, maintaining eye contact with him.
"Too bad because that is detention for you!" Mr Jackson snapped.
Rolling my eyes, I sat back on the wooden chair with a huff and the bell chose the opportunity to ring.
Everyone let out a languid sigh as the class got dismissed.
Some students started rushing out as soon as the bell stopped. Some came out to the front, imitated Mr Jackson whilst others stayed behind waiting for their friends to walk to the next class.
I was part of those that stayed.
"Thank goodness, I thought I would die in there for a moment," I said, turning to Lee whilst putting a stray hair behind my ear.
"We still have detention." She pointed out as she gathered her books on her table inside her pink messenger bag.
“Most irritating thing ever!" I groaned as I thought of what we would be asked to do. The worst for me so far was cleaning the toilets the teachers use. It was filthy and it reeked. I couldn't count the number of times I retched after that day.
I gagged as I glanced at Lee who was trying to zip up her bag due to the load she had in it.
I wonder why she often takes this many notes to school. It wasn't as if we were doing anything major. I mean, we were seniors and we had little time to use in school.
Why would I ruin my fun time with carrying notebooks all around?
The hair on the back of my neck prickled as I sensed someone drilling holes through me. Whirling, I saw Rey at the back which was where he always sat since the beginning of the term, with his gaze fixated on me.
Although that was what I wanted, for him to notice me, to know I existed but his gaze unsettles me. He didn't look away as my eyes met his, he continued staring as if he wanted to figure me out.
Shifting from one foot to another, I wrung the ring on my index finger, a habit I had grown accustomed to. My gaze shifted back to Lee as she tapped my shoulder.
"Come on babe, let's go." Lee, who didn't notice the exchange between me and Rey, said as she slung her bag on her shoulder.
We sauntered out of the class, to our next class which I prefer since Lee and I get to sit together unlike history class where the seating arrangement was one per student.
