I just don't know what to do. Monique sees me watching. "I'll go home. I'll see you tomorrow." And she walks away. "See you tomorrow." When I turn around, Jason stands next to me. "Hi, do you work here?" He asks.
"Hey, yes Monique asked me last week if I wanted to work with her. Today was my first day."
"Congratulations then." And he smiles. "I will go for dinner at The Hunt, want to come with me?" His face is hopeful.
"Uh, yeah okay." We walk in silence to the cafe. "Now that you have a job here, does that mean you're staying?" He asks carefully as we sit down. I just don't know what to say.
"Honestly, I don't know yet. I do want to give it a chance here. The past few days felt really welcoming, due to everyone I've met." He nods and looks at the menu. "Are you in the mood for something?" I think for a moment. "I don't know yet. I'm in doubt between the spare ribs or the burger. What are you going to have?"
"I think the spare ribs with bbq sauce. They are really tasty here."
"Hmm, I'll take that too. But with chili sauce."
"Good choice, but I have to warn you. The chili sauce is very hot."
I laugh. "I can take some. But thank you." "Okay, but don't say I didn't warn you." He jokes. A waitress comes to take our order. She looks at me in surprise when I indicate that I want the chili sauce, but writes it down anyway. "Tell me, how was your first day?" Jason asks. He looks at me with interest.
"It was okay. It wasn't that busy. Monique showed me how to check the order and I was able to help a few customers. But I've mainly been busy writing. Monique asked me to keep a blog at the website. So I wrote an introduction piece."
"What kind of blog are you going to write?" "About different books. Every time about a different book. At least that's the intention. I don't know if it will work every week. Not every book is easy to write about. But I can do it." I say confidently. "As long as you're confident you'll be fine. I'm looking forward to reading it," He says with a smile. Meanwhile, our food is brought. It looks delicious. Jason's already had the sauce on it. But I get the chili sauce separately. I'm starting to believe they only know big portions here. There are 3 large pieces in front of me, I can never finish them. I cut the first piece into pieces. Jason looks at me as I distribute the sauce. I'm smart enough not to put to much on it, just in case.
Holy s**t! I think to myself as soon as I take the first bite. He wasn't exaggerating, it's really hot. I feel myself turning red, so hot. I hear him chuckle. No way I'm saying he was right. As soon as I have empty my mouth I grab my glass of water and drink it almost in one gulp. "Too hot?" He asks mockingly. I look at him. "No, not at all. I love it when my tongue is on fire." I answer sarcastically. I bravely start the next part. I just make sure there's a lot less sauce on it. I see him looking at me in disbelief. Now that there is less sauce on it, it is doable and they are very tasty. "I know you're the Alpha, but what does that mean?" I ask him. He thinks for a moment. "That I'm the boss of the Pack. When I give an order, they have to listen. It also means I have to make sure everyone stays safe, make sure money comes in. I own a well-run club chain in town. I'm in contact with the Elders, who control as it were, the course of events in the different packs. To make sure that all Alphas follow our rules. That's it in a nutshell. It is a bit more complicated of course."
"Wow, you're under quite a bit of pressure. I can see why you don't want everyone to know yet. How do you become an Alpha?" I got really curious. "In most cases, it's passed down from father to son. It's in the bloodline. When the eldest son turns 18, he takes over." I listen carefully.
"In most cases? When can it be done differently?"
"Sometimes the Alpha is challenged by another wolf, usually another high-ranked wolf. Then there is a fight, and if the challenger wins, he is named Alpha."
“Does that happen often? I ask. “Occasionally but most of the time the challenger loses. Alphas are often a lot stronger than others. Especially if they have a mate. It makes us stronger because we have something to fight for."
"Hmm, makes sense."
The rest of the time we talk about less serious stuff. When I've finished just over half of my spare ribs, I'm really full. "Pfff, this is to much for a normal person. I can't eat anymore."
"Yeah, they are a little more considerate of our species here. We eat a lot." He says with a laugh.
"Well if you want more then you can eat this." I say pointing to my leftover spare ribs. He thinks for a moment.
""Uhm no thanks. That sauce is to spicy for me. I'd rather just die." He says as I take a sip of my drink. Because I have to laugh I almost choke on my drink and start to cough. Jason looks at me shocked. "Are you okay?"
I smile. "Yeah, I'm okay."
"Do you mind if I walk with you to the hotel?" Jason asks a little uncomfortably. I wasn't expecting that question and it makes me a little shy. "Yes if you want to." I answer blushing. He smiles. "Yes, please, I'll pay the bill, and then we can go."
We walk in silence to the hotel. I actually want to say something to break the silence but I get the feeling he's about to say something so I don't say anything.
When we are almost at the hotel he stops. "Haily, I know I'd give you time to process everything with your ex. And so you can get used to the idea that you're my mate. But if you're free next weekend, would you go on a date with me?"
