The beginning of the end
The Beginning of the End
Aria Matthews could hardly recognize the woman staring back at her in the mirror. The woman who had once worn her heart on her sleeve, the woman who believed in love, and the woman who trusted people with the same intensity she lived her life—she was gone. The years since Lucas had left her had transformed her, hardened her. And today, she was no longer the woman who had loved him unconditionally. She was a woman on a mission.
Her fingers hovered over the cold, silver necklace Lucas had given her on their third anniversary. She had kept it, telling herself that it was for the memories. But today, as she ran it through her fingers, she realized it was just another symbol of her failure, another connection to the man who had betrayed her.
The day Lucas left, everything she had known about love had shattered. He had told her that his ambitions were more important than their relationship, that he couldn’t be with someone who wasn’t “on his level.” His words still stung in her ears, haunting her with each passing year. “You’ll never be enough for me, Aria. I need someone who can keep up.”
As she stood there, adjusting the crisp white blouse and black skirt she’d chosen for her first day at Ward Enterprises, the anger resurfaced, bubbling under the surface. This wasn’t just a job. This was her chance to get revenge, to remind Lucas of the woman he had walked away from. She had spent the last three years plotting, learning everything she could about Alexander Ward, the man who was Lucas’s boss and the key to her plan.

A Familiar Face
As she entered the sleek, glass-walled building of Ward Enterprises, Aria’s heart pounded in her chest. She could almost feel the ghosts of the past at her back. Lucas had spent years chasing Alexander’s approval, yearning for his mentorship, all while treating her like an afterthought. But today, Aria would be the one who had something Lucas could never attain. She was stepping into a world that had once been his dream—she just had a different goal.
Her mind whirled as she was escorted through the building, her eyes darting from the expensive artwork on the walls to the perfectly manicured staff that moved with silent precision. She had done her research. Ward Enterprises was one of the most prestigious firms in the city, and its CEO, Alexander Ward, was both a business mogul and a man shrouded in mystery. Little did Aria know, she wasn’t the only one who had been plotting.
When the elevator doors slid open, she was greeted by a tall figure standing at the end of the hallway. His silhouette alone demanded respect, and when he turned to face her, Aria’s breath caught in her throat. Alexander Ward.
He was even more intimidating in person than she had imagined—his dark, sharp eyes scanning her as though he was already measuring her up. There was something calculating in his gaze, something that sent a chill down her spine. But that was good. She needed him to see her as a force to be reckoned with.
“Ms. Matthews,” he greeted, his voice smooth, almost like velvet. “Welcome to Ward Enterprises.”
“Thank you, Mr. Ward,” Aria replied, her voice steady but her heart racing. She couldn’t afford to let him see her as anything less than confident.
He didn’t smile, didn’t offer a handshake—his attention, however, was completely focused on her. It was both unnerving and exhilarating. “I hope you’re ready for what’s to come,” he said, his words laced with something she couldn’t quite place. “This is a high-pressure environment. You’ll have to prove yourself every single day.”

A Dangerous Proposition
Aria’s first few days were spent in a whirlwind of meetings, paperwork, and getting used to the intense demands of the job. But it wasn’t long before she found herself working directly with Alexander. She had learned everything she could about him—his work ethic, his sharp mind, and his reputation as a man who never tolerated weakness. What she hadn’t anticipated, however, was the unexpected pull she felt toward him. The way he commanded attention, the way his presence lingered even after he left the room—it made it impossible to ignore.
One evening, after an exhausting round of meetings, Alexander asked her to stay late to help finalize some reports. Aria was exhausted but knew this was her chance to get closer to him, to start the process of turning her plan into reality.
The office was quiet, the only sounds the low hum of the city outside and the tapping of their keyboards.
The office had fallen into a hushed lull. Outside, the city lights blinked against the windows, casting reflections that shimmered across the glass walls of Ward Enterprises like ghostly illusions. Most of the staff had left hours ago, leaving only the hum of Aria’s computer and the distant murmur of the janitorial crew on the ground floor.
Aria leaned back in her chair and stretched, rotating her wrists before returning to the last set of files Alexander Ward had sent down personally.
She wasn’t doing overtime just to impress him—well, not entirely.
This was about control. This job was her stage, and she intended to shine so brightly, it would scorch everyone who had ever doubted her. Including Lucas.
Especially Lucas.
Her eyes burned from hours of reviewing proposals, but she pushed through. She needed to be perfect. Impeccable. Untouchable.
She reached for her pen when something on her desk caught her attention—a thin booklet tucked underneath her notebook.
Staff Directory – Updated Internal List, Q2.
Her brows furrowed. She hadn’t seen that before. She didn’t remember anyone dropping it off.
Maybe HR sent it down earlier.
She flipped it open absentmindedly, scanning through names. A small part of her was curious—maybe she’d come across someone interesting, someone to be cautious of. Her fingers trailed down the “S” section. Sales, Strategy, Security…
And then it hit her like a slap.
Gray, Lucas – Senior Analyst, Strategy Division – 10th Floor.
Her breath caught. For a second, the room spun.
No. That can’t be right.
She blinked, read it again. Same name. Same floor.
He was here?
Not only in the same city, not only in the same industry—but in this very building. Just two floors above her. Breathing the same air. Walking the same halls.
Aria’s heart thudded violently against her ribcage.
All this time she’d been plotting, fantasizing about catching Lucas off guard, using Alexander to upend his comfortable little world—and now it turned out she might be the one walking blindly into his territory.
Did he know?
That question alone made her stomach churn.
Had he seen her name on the employee roster? Had he laughed when her resume crossed HR’s desk? Was this some twisted coincidence… or had someone planned this?
Her chest tightened. Her brain raced.
She launched her onboarding emails, scrolling through each message, her eyes scanning like searchlights. Nothing from Lucas. No recommendation. No note. No red flags.
Her hiring had come straight from Alexander himself. His signature. His request. No one else.
Still, unease crept into her bones. She had always considered herself ten steps ahead of Lucas. But now, for the first time, she wasn’t sure which of them had stepped into the other’s trap.
Suddenly, the elevator dinged.
Her spine straightened.
She stood slowly, almost instinctively, turning toward the hallway that led to the lobby.
And there he was.
Lucas Gray.
Tall, smooth, confident in that infuriating way he always was. His navy-blue suit looked freshly pressed, tie loosened just enough to say I work hard, but I’m still better than you. His gaze found her immediately, and when his eyes locked with hers, Aria felt a cold spark run down her spine.
He didn’t look shocked to see her.
He looked amused.
He stepped into the hallway, leaned against the doorframe like he had every right to be there. Like they hadn’t left pieces of each other scattered across their past.
“Well, well,” he said, voice slick as ever. “Didn’t think I’d see you here.”
Aria forced herself not to flinch. Her fingers curled subtly at her side, nails digging into her palm. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing her rattled.
“Life’s full of surprises,” she replied smoothly, matching his tone with practiced ease.
Lucas chuckled under his breath, pushing away from the frame and walking a few steps into the office. “Surprises? Sure. But this one?” He tilted his head, eyeing her from head to toe with that unreadable smirk. “Feels a little too… deliberate.”
Aria didn’t blink. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Who said I was?” He slipped his hands into his pockets and nodded toward her desk. “Still chasing ambition like it’s your last breath, huh?”
She tilted her head, stepping closer now. “And you’re still trying to fill the void with arrogance. Some things really don’t change.”
Lucas laughed, quiet and condescending. “You never did learn how to stay in your lane, Aria. That was always your problem.”
“And you never learned how to handle a woman who didn’t worship your shadow,” she snapped, her voice laced with venom—but controlled. Always controlled.
A brief silence settled between them, thick and tense.
Then his expression shifted. Slightly.
Like he wanted to say something… but changed his mind.
He took a step back, heading toward the hallway.
“Just be careful,” he said casually. “Ward’s not as predictable as you think.”
And with that, he turned, leaving her alone again—except now, her head was full of questions and her chest full of heat.
Was that a warning?
A threat?
Or just another of his twisted little games?
Aria stared at the elevator doors long after they closed, her reflection flickering in the polished metal.
The game had started.
And now, she wasn’t just playing to win.
She was playing to survive.
