Chapter 2

1282 Words
Val "What did you just do, Val?" I said to myself, driving into the gun range. "You don't even know this guy...there was just something about him..." The scent of pine and fresh mountain air hung in the air, as I drove up to the range with Max out front tapping his watch. "I know, I know, but I almost forgot your coffee" as I walked up handing it to him. Max was a funny little man, he was a couple inches shorter than me with a mousy older face, dark hair, and always wore dark brown glasses that were the same color as his hair. He has been a family friend since we moved to this town years ago. He started teaching me how to shoot then, and now I help him teach classes on the side. Lucas "So, Gavin thinks that girl is your mate? The human?" Damien asked. "You're an Alpha. Alphas don't normally have human mates, that just puts them at risk", he added. "I know, I know!" I said "No one in my family has ever been mated to a human, and there is no way my mother and father will approve of it. The pack will not accept a human. I have to reject her, right? “ I said as I ran my hands through my hair. "I don't know, man, there has to be a reason the moon goddess chose her. Right?" Damien added. "I don't know. I asked to take her to coffee, and she gave me her number." I said. "What? Wow! Seriously? Just like that? “ Damien asked, surprised, snapping his fingers. "There was just something there, plus I handed her coffee. She almost left it on the roof when I followed her to the car ", I said. Damien laughed "Guilted her into it, huh?" "Maybe a little. I have to text her and set up a time." I said, grinning. "So, what are you waiting for?" Damien asked. "I should try and figure out why before I reject her, right?" I said. "You've waited for 3 years since becoming Alpha. Don't you owe it to yourself to find out whether this one is the one?" Damien said. Wolves find their mate at 17 years old, and when I turned 17, I never found mine. My dad finally made me the Alpha title at 18 even though I didn't have a mate. My mom was constantly having parties and inviting eligible she-wolves over for a possible mate. I had some fun with some she wolves and women over the years but never had a mate vibe from any of them, I thought for a moment. "Yeah!" I exclaimed. I pulled out my phone and texted the number on my hand. " Hi Val, this is Lucas, looking forward to coffee tomorrow. When are you available?" I paused a moment to see if the 3 telltale dots would show up, saying she was responding but nothing. I locked my phone, because she had said she was headed to the range. I wonder what that was about. Val My day was occupied with my class, thank goodness, so my mind didn't wander back to what I had done at the Café earlier. I'm sure he changed his mind after seeing what a flake I am anyway. We finally wrapped up class around 330pm, and I pulled out my phone to see a text from an unknown number. It said "Hi Val, this is Lucas, looking forward to coffee tomorrow. When are you available?" Hmmm he actually messaged me. I can't say that I wasn't slightly excited and scared all at once. Dating was never my Forte', as I was never one of the prettiest or popular girls in school. I had friends, but nothing serious ever came out of any dates. Aside from the fact everyone around here I knew and wasn't interested in. I answered him, "Hi Lucas! I don’t have any help at the Café tomorrow until the afternoon. Is 3/330 pm too late for coffee?" I waited a second, contemplating that this could very well be the dumbest thing I've done in a while, but what's the worst that could happen? I'd be in my own Café for goodness sake. Okay send! Lucas A ding and vibrate from my phone, and I looked down with excitement to see that it was Val. It had been several hours, but she responded with "Hi Lucas! I don't have any help at the Café tomorrow until the afternoon. Is 3/330 pm too late for coffee?" That would work out great, seeing as we had plenty of work to do tonight hunting rogues. I responded "Is it ever too late for coffee? 330 would be great! Should I just meet you at the Café? " I sent her the message and to my surprise a quick answer came back, "yep I'll be there! Hopefully, I don't almost burn you with coffee again!" "No worries, I'm used to getting in the way of this physique," I told her. I was excited to see another quick response from her, "Well, I'll work on being more graceful tomorrow. BTW, are there any favorite flavors of dessert or pastries you like? Was she the one that baked? I responded, "well, definitely anything chocolate, peanut butter, or buttery." "Great! See you then!" She responded, and I felt absolutely giddy at the thought of seeing her again. I smiled as I wrote back "I'm looking forward to it! " Why was I so excited? I couldn't possibly see this through? No one would take me seriously and she would be in constant danger. That's even if she would accept me for who and what I am. I put it out of my mind, I said I was going to learn more about her, and then I could reject her without being attached. Val I felt like a high school-aged girl waiting for a stupid ding on my phone. Why? What was so different about this guy? Was it because he was a stranger to town? There was a quick response from Lucas saying" is it ever too late for coffee? 330 would be great! Should I just meet you at the Café?" Wow, at least he was considerate of where I may or may not be. I responded back “yep, I'll be there! Hopefully, I don't almost burn you with coffee again!" It was SOOO embarrassing sometimes with how clumsy I could be at times. He came back with "No worries, I'm used to getting in the way of this physique." He was a hugely tall muscular guy, but then I thought maybe he had a favorite dessert I could whip up for a special tomorrow. So, I asked "Well, I'll work on being more graceful tomorrow. BTW, are there any favorite flavors of dessert or pastries you like?" I could hear Max grumbling behind me saying I was taking too long on the phone, "one second I'm coming. You want to go shoot a few full mags?" In his generally non-cholent manor, Max answered "is it a day ending in Y? So yes, I want to shoot a few rounds." I heard my phone ding again as I picked up my range bag to follow Max over to the shooting stalls. Lucas wrote "well, definitely anything chocolate, peanut butter, or buttery." I thought to myself, I can work with that. I responded quickly," Great! See you then!" And put my phone away and started to get out my gear. I heard another ding before I put my muffs on, Lucas' message read "I'm looking forward to it! "
