Chapter 10

"What the f**k happened?" I roared storming through the pack house. Two hour's it had taken to get back. Running would have been quicker but the human's would have seen. Dad, my Beta, Gamma and Delta were all waiting by the back door. "She was only in the clearing out back. But Alpha...it's the same wolf scent from when we found her." Alec's head was hung low but his voice was full of anger. Those f*****g scumbags came on to my territory and dared to steal my Mate! Pulling out my phone I rang Shaun. His pack had the best trackers in the country. "Roe's been taken." I growled out as soon as he answered. I was starting to visibly shake with anger. "Dominic's on his way. He'll be there within the hour." Shaun said after a pause before hung up. Dominic was his best tracker by far and I was grateful for his help. "Dad! Watch the pack!" I managed to get out before Demon took over, I couldn't hold him back any longer and after shifting he ran to the clearing. Her scent was still here, but so was the scent of the wolves that took her. It's been hours and even Demon was having trouble following Roe's scent past the clearing. It was too faint and patchy, as though they had used something to cover it. Once Dominic arrived it became easy to follow the trail and we ran for hours, her scent skirting around several packs and taking us north. Where the f**k did they take her? They've had her for nearly 12 hours and I had already started to feel her pain, but I had no idea what they were doing. I knew her wrist was hurting more and so was her face. They would pay for this! Finally her scent was becoming stronger and we could follow it without help. An old dilapidated building came into view, surrounded by disgusting rogues. Demon growled, charging straight for the building as the wolves scattered, fleeing for their lives at the mere sight of us. Cowards. Not scared to steal my Mate but too afraid to fight me. They will pay, but right now I needed to find Roe. Shifting back I tore the metal door off it's hinges, making my way through the mouldy maze of hallways, following her scent and the mongrels that had taken her until I heard a scream. "ROE!" Demon growled and rushed around a corner, toward a thick metal door that required a code to open. Jace quickly got to work on the keypad but he wasn't quick enough. Another scream came from behind the door. As soon as it unlocked, I swung it open but what I saw was not what I expected. Roe was scrambling up the stone steps on her hands and knees, bloodied knife in one hand, trying to get free of the guard on her ankle. Before I could move to help, she had managed to smash her free foot into his nose. With a grunt the guard fell back and tumbled down the stairs. Swiftly, Roe crawled up the remaining stairs and, as I crouched, into my waiting arms. Her eyes were wide, full of fear and anger as she held onto my biceps. Her face was bloodied and bruised. Alec ran ahead of us and quickly apprehended the guard lying at the bottom of the stairs. Warren and Jace went to check out the rest of the place. Gently I tried to take the knife from her hand but she flinched. "Hey, Hey it's me." I whispered softly. Moving my free hand to cup her cheek. Roe focused on my eyes for a moment, when she looked down at her bloody hands she suddenly let go of the knife like it was on fire. What the hell had happened? Lifting her shaking body into my arms, I held her close. What had they done to her? Why had they taken her? "Alpha, there are syringes down here, a dead guard in the cell and another just outside it. Looks like they were stabbed." Jace linked sounding pissed. "Looks like Roe stabbed them." They kept her in a f*****g cell? And she had killed two wolves! My precious, strong Mate. She whimpered in my arms as her eyes began to close. "It's okay. I've got you." I whispered gently, trying to calm her. "Damien?" Her voice was hoarse. Demon wanted to tell her that it was him and not me, but it wasn't the time. A shaky sigh escaped her as she pressed her palm against my bare chest. Oh, how I had missed those tingles. "I'm sorry." What was she talking about? She curled into me more and I held her tightly. She was safe now. She was here in our arms and safe. "Shh, you have nothing to be sorry about. I'm the one who should be sorry." We mumbled against her hair, breathing in her scent. Goddess I had missed her so much. "It's my fault." Her voice was barely audible now. "We'll talk about this later, Princess." I said as I kissed her forehead and carried her outside. I pushed forward and gratefully, Demon gave me back control. The warriors had taken down any rogues they could catch, but they weren't important. The wolves down in that cell weren't rogues. They had a pack, we just had to find it. "Alpha." Alec's voice came into my head. "Just been informed that Alpha Shaun is waiting for you at his border." Good, Roe needed a doctor fast and his land was closer. Those bastards. I couldn't wait to get my claws into that guard. I'd make him beg for death.  Roe was limp in my arms by the time we reached Shaun and his Beta. "Okay, how the hell are you not covered in blood? Tell me you're trade mark blood bath is back there at least? Surely you killed them?" Shaun asked in disbelief. I looked down at Roe. "She bet me too it." I mumbled. A strange mixture if pride and sorrow filled my chest. Pride that she could take down wolves, sorrow that she ever had to and how killing might effect her. Could she handle it? I wasn't so sure. Especially with her habit of avoiding everything. "Wow. Maybe her balls are even bigger then yours." He smirked. A smile tugged at my lips because he didn't know just how right he was. Shaun had clothes and a car waiting for us, which I was grateful for as I slid into the back with Roe on my lap. Warren opened the other door and sat beside me. He handed me a pair of shorts and I noticed he had already slipped a pair on. Unwillingly I handed Roe over to him so I could slip the shorts on. When he handed her back to me I noticed another piece of cloth in his hand. He reached towards her and I couldn't stop the low growl that escaped my lips as I held her tighter. Not that it stopped him. "Watch." He linked and hesitantly I watched as he gently removed the blood from a scratch on her arm, revealing something gold under her skin. I looked at him then back to the scratch, my brow furrowing. How did he know this and I didn't. Was this in that stupid file I should have read? He pointed to her cheek. I remembered the cut on her cheek, but I don't remember seeing gold. Did he clean her cheek? I knew I should have followed her. What is she? I stared down at her bloodied face as I gently touched the deep cut that travelled through her left eyebrow and into her hairline. It barely missed her eye. I wonder if the gold is under every cut? Or is it under all of he skin. I'd never heard of any supernatural who had gold beneath their skin. What is it? "Moron." Demon muttered. "Do you know what she is?" He ignored me. f*****g mutt. Warren held a finger to his lips. He was right. We had to keep this too ourselves, maybe it had something to do with why those mongrels took her.  Shaun led us into his private medical wing. It was a huge modern building with every luxury, of course, this was Shaun we were talking about. He was always a 'no expense spared' kind of person. Gently I laid Roe down on the bed and carefully moved her hair away from her face. I really hated seeing her like this. I hadn't noticed Shaun leave until he came back with a greying male in tow. I growled at the stranger and placed myself between him and my Mate. "Relax, this is Gerald. My best doctor." Another growl was all I could manage. No way was he touching my Mate. Even if he is the doctor, Roe won't like it. "Do you have a female doctor, Alpha Shaun? Our Luna doesn't like men touching her and she's been through enough already." Alec spoke up for me. Clearly making up for his mistake. I will find out what happened once we get Roe home. Shaun shook his head. "I don't I'm afraid. The best I can offer is my sister who's training to be one." He shrugged. "Your sister will do just fine. Do I have permission to call our doctor over?" Alec spoke again. "Without question. Whatever is best for your Luna." Shaun left with that and returned moments later with his sister. Chelsea was the opposite of her brother in everyway. Blonde, short and lean, she was also ridiculously shy compared to her over confident brother.  I kept hold of Roe's hand as I watched the girl. She bowed respectfully and quickly got to work checking Roe over and attaching her to machines. Not that she need to be hooked up to them, we could hear her heart beat clearly. "Alpha, your Luna is okay. But the cut on her face needs stitches and we...need to...to clean her wounds." She spoke softly, with her head down. I knew exactly why she was nervous. Wolves get possessive over their Mates and don't want anyone touching them. Alpha's were even worse and Chelsea knew my reputation on top of that. Another growl vibrated my chest. Not only did I not want anyone touching her, I knew Roe wouldn't like it and we needed to keep her gold layer a secret. Chelsea yelped and hid behind her brother who sighed. "Alright, calm down you brute." Shaun turned to his sister, his hands on her shoulders. "Ignore the i***t Chels, he's just trying to keep his reputation intact." He smirked as he turned back to us. I just glared at him and he rolled his eyes. "Fine, you clean her wounds then. But don't blame me if you do a s**t job." He had a point as always. Blowing out an exasperated puff of air I looked at Chelsea, her head still bowed. "Do your job. But you tell no one what you see in here." Shakily, Chelsea nodded and began to remove my Mates tattered clothing. Alec quickly left, dragging a confused Shaun out with him. Helping to strip Roe into only her underwear, I paid attention to the scars on her stomach. They seemed to match her current cuts and the shape was familiar. We cleaned her up and if Chelsea noticed the gold, she didn't say anything about it. She just did her job diligently. Once we were done, I looked over my Mate's body while Chelsea started with the stitches. I recognise the marks. But for the life of me, I couldn't remember what caused them. My fingers gently ran over them as I tried to figure it out. The old scars seemed to be mainly on her stomach and back, but the new cuts were everywhere. Recognition hit me as my fingers touched three marks at the same time. Quickly moving to the other side of the bed, I put my fingers back on the same marks and lightly pulled them towards me. Claw marks. She was covered in claw marks. It suddenly became clear as I took in all of her. Claw marks covered her like constellations, old and new. The marks on her back weren't from a whip, they were from someone slowly dragging a claw down her skin. A torture technique I was well versed in. They never used anything to hurt her except their own claws. f**k! If she remembers she...she'll hate us. Frustrated, I ran a hand through my hair before I covered her up with a blanket. Taking her hand in mine, I sat watching as Chelsea carefully stitched the wound closed. "I promise I will never hurt you." I whispered as I leaned down to kiss her knuckles. I could only hope that she believed me when the time came.
