CHAPTER 1: The Hollow She-Wolf
The air in the Ironfang courtyard tasted of damp pine, crushed leaves, and impending ruin.
Vespera Thorne stood in the shadow of the ancient stone altar, her fingers trembling so violently she had to lace them together in front of her stark white ceremonial dress. Around her, hundreds of pack members gathered beneath the golden glare of the full moon. Their hushed voices cut through the cool night air like silver blades.
"Look at her. Eighteen years old and still no whisper of a wolf."
"It’s embarrassing. The Beta’s bloodline used to mean something."
"If she can't shift tonight, she’s useless. A human leech living on pack rations."
Vespera swallowed past the painful lump in her throat, forcing her chin up. She had spent her entire life trying to ignore the whispers, but tonight, there was nowhere to hide. Tonight was the Lunar Awakening—the sacred ceremony where every eighteen-year-old in the Ironfang Pack was called to submit to the Moon Goddess and unleash their inner beast.
She glanced toward the front row of the crowd. Her father, Beta Thomas Thorne, stood with his arms crossed, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. Beside him, her mother wouldn't even look at her, her eyes fixed steadfastly on the dirt.
And then there was Seraphina.
Her older sister stood like a radiant goddess in her own crimson silk, her golden hair practically glowing under the moonlight. Seraphina had shifted two years ago into a swift, beautiful fawn-colored wolf. She was the family’s pride, the pack’s darling.
Seraphina caught Vespera looking and offered a delicate, pitying smile—a smile that didn't reach her bright blue eyes. You don't belong here, sister, the look said without a single word.
"Quiet!"
The deep, resonant voice of Alpha Marcus shattered the courtyard’s murmurs. The crowd fell instantly silent, stepping back to make way for the pack's leadership.
Standing right beside the Alpha was his son—Kaelen Cross.
Vespera’s heart did a violent flip against her ribs. Kaelen was stunning in the lethal, breathtaking way all top-tier predators were. Broad-shouldered, dark-haired, with sharp, golden eyes that commanded absolute obedience. He was the future Alpha of the Ironfang Pack—and for three long years, a faint, golden thread of warmth had lived in Vespera’s chest whenever he walked into a room.
The mate bond. It was dormant, unsealed, but it was there. She knew he felt it too. When they were younger, before the pack realized her wolf was silent, Kaelen used to steal glances at her. He used to hold her hand behind the training barracks and whisper that they would rule the pack together.
Please, Goddess, Vespera prayed, closing her eyes tightly as a tear threatened to spill. Just give me a spark. Let me shift. Don't leave me in the dark.
"Tonight," Alpha Marcus boomed, his voice echoing off the surrounding mountain peaks, "Vespera Thorne reaches her eighteenth moon. By law, she must answer the call of the Silver Moon and step into her true form!"
Kaelen stepped forward, taking his place at the edge of the stone circle. He looked at Vespera, but his golden eyes were entirely cold. Unreadable.
"Step into the circle, Vespera," Alpha Marcus commanded.
Vespera’s legs felt like lead, but she forced her feet forward. Every step felt like a march to an executioner's block. She stood in the center of the carved stone glyphs, right where the moonlight shone brightest.
"Close your eyes," the Alpha ordered. "Reach into your soul. Call upon your beast!"
Vespera closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and plunged into the depths of her own mind, clawing desperately for anything. A growl, a ember of heat, a pulse of wild energy—anything at all.
Come on, she screamed internally, her soul weeping. Please! I'm here! Hear me!
Silence.
The air around her turned freezing cold. The lunar light bathed her skin, but instead of the burning, agonizing heat of transformation that every wolf described, she felt nothing. Only a hollow, empty void.
Five seconds passed.
Ten seconds.
Thirty seconds.
The silence in the courtyard grew heavy, suffocating, cruel.
Vespera squeezed her eyes shut tighter, her teeth digging into her bottom lip until she tasted copper. Please... don't do this to me...
"Enough," Alpha Marcus’s voice cut through the air, heavy with utter disgust.
Vespera snapped her eyes open.
The entire pack was staring at her. Sneers, pitied glances, and outright revulsion covered the faces of the people she had grown up with.
"Unshifted," Alpha Marcus declared, his voice ringing across the courtyard like a death sentence. "A defect. A hollow she-wolf."
The word echoed in Vespera’s ears, shattering the last fragments of her heart. Defect.
Panic seized her. She turned frantically toward Kaelen, taking a step forward with her hands outstretched. "Kaelen..." she begged, her voice breaking. "I... I tried! I don't know why it's not working, but—"
"Do not address me, Vespera," Kaelen interrupted.
His voice wasn't just cold—it was absolute zero. He crossed into the center of the stone circle, stepping between her and the crowd.
"The Alpha line of the Ironfang Pack requires absolute strength," Kaelen announced, raising his voice so all two hundred pack members could hear every word. "A future Alpha cannot be burdened by dead weight. A leader cannot mate with a broken, unshifted human posing as a wolf."
A sharp, violent pain slammed into Vespera’s chest. The dormant mate bond began to throb wildly, sensing the threat.
"Kaelen, please," Vespera gasped, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Don't do this here. Not like this..."
Kaelen stepped back, brushing her reaching hand away as if her touch were poison. He raised his chin, his golden eyes flashing with ruthless resolve.
"I, Kaelen Cross, future Alpha of the Ironfang Pack," he shouted into the night sky, "hereby reject you, Vespera Thorne, as my mate and my future Luna!"
