CHAPTER 32 MAEWith bright light filtering through my closed eyelids, I fluttered my eyes open and squinted until I adjusted to the glaring hospital light. I pushed myself to a seated position and cursed at the pain, staring blankly at the cream-colored walls. An IV was jammed into my vein, monitors beeped steadily to my left, and Damon sat in a scarlet-cushioned chair beside my bed. He sat back in the chair, his head resting on the wall, his eyes closed, a moonflower in his lap. When the bed creaked, he blinked his eyes open and straightened his back. “Mae, you’re awake, and you’re okay.” He smiled at me, his worried features softening.
