The day has finally arrived
Elena " Applause rang out in the packed auditorium as Elena stepped onto the stage, the weight of her accomplishment setting in. The golden plague in her hands shimmered under the bright lights, a tangible symbol of her hard work and sacrifice. The award wasn't just a title - it was her passport to Palermo, where she'd been selected for an exclusive internship with one of the most prestigious art galleries in Italy. A once in a lifetime opportunity. She scans the crowd, searching for her family, when she spots her mother's familiar face. Her mom's eyes met hers and a small smile appeared that didn't quite reach her eyes. Two years ago, her father was tragically killed in a car accident and her mom had to carry all the financial burdens, especially paying off her father's gambling debt. Loan sharks kept appearing, threatening her mother to pay off the debt. This really took a toll on their family. This award meant freedom, not just for her future, but for the survival of her family. Elena, an inspiring 21-year-old third-year student studying creative arts at the University of Catania, has always been very particular about what she wants to achieve in her life. Her family has been struggling financially with her mom being the sole bread winner. This made Elena more eager to work harder than the usual student, ensuring that she won this award, as her family's future depended on it. Even though Elena was happy at that moment, she kept having a feeling that there were eyes on her. Looking around in the packed hall and seeing nothing out of the ordinary, she dismissed the thought and joined her family in the crowd. " How about pizza to celebrate?" Her mom's voice echoed in her ears as she made her way to where they were seated." That would be awesome," her best friend Gabriella said as she embraced Elena for a hug. "Let's go," her mom said before they made their way out of the auditorium. In a far left corner where no one could see, a shadow appeared, texting a few words on his phone. He turned in the direction the family left, before exiting the hall. Laughter was emitting in the small diner, worries were all put in the back of their minds. Elena excused herself from going to the restroom, but she kept having this uneasy feeling. A feeling that she was being watched, being followed. Elena made her way back, joining her family, unaware that danger was creeping. Once they were done, Gabby insisted that they stop at the supermarket as she wanted to grab some snacks and ice cream. The car stopped in front of the supermarket. Elena and Gabby stepped out. Her brother fell asleep in his mother's arms, so they stayed inside the car. Making their way inside. Elena noticed that the supermarket was unusually quiet, with a little fewer people in the aisles. They continued to roam around getting the necessities when Elena heard noises coming from the back. She could hear that there were many men inside. It sounded as if there was an argument going on. She stepped closer to the door, leaning her head against it. Behind the storage door of a supermarket, two men were kneeling down, their hands tied behind their backs. Light was slicing through the blinds, fractured beams struggling against the smoke-laced air. The scent of gun oil lingers-sharp, metallic blending with the slow burn of expensive cigars. Men in black suits stand motionless, their presence a silent warning. Circling around the two men, a figure stood tall. He emitted an aura so strong that even those around him had cold sweat appearing. And then... A gunshot rang out. The sharp crack of the bullet sent a violent tremor through Elena's body. Her breath hitched, her pulse hammering against her ribs. She hadn't meant to move - but the shock made her jolt, and her fingertips brushed against the cold metal of the door handle. The door gave way. Before she could stop herself, she stumbled forward. The air inside was heavy, thick with smoke and something far more sinister. Her gaze landed on the scene before her, and her stomach twisted. A body. Motionless. Blood pooling beneath it. She swallowed hard, her limbs frozen as her mind scrambled to make sense of what she was seeing. The men in suits stood like statues, their faces unreadable, their presence suffocating. One man, standing in the center of it all, exuded an aura so chilling that the hairs on her arms stood on end. She couldn't see his face clearly - not through the dim lighting, not through the sheer terror gripping her. She needed to move. To leave. To pretend she had never seen any of this. But the moment she shifted, another pair of eyes snapped in her direction. Her heart lurched. Had they noticed her? No - One of the men only adjusted his stance, murmuring something low to another. No one was looking at her. She wasn't supposed to be here. Fighting every instinct screaming at her to panic, she took a slow, trembling step backward, willing herself to disappear before anyone realized they had an uninvited audience. Just as she was slowly turning, something under her foot made a cracking sound. The man's gaze locked onto her, sharp and assessing. Elena's breath caught in her throat. A cold wave of fear spread through her limbs, rooting her to the spot. Her mind screamed at her to move, to do something - but all she could do was stand there, trapped in his stare. The tension in the room shifted. The other men, previously silent, now turned their attention toward her. For a brief second, no one moved. The stillness was suffocating. Then -" Hey you, stop." one of the men growled, stepping forward. Elena's body reacted before her mind could. She stumbled back, her foot scraping against the floor. The slight sound was enough to shatter the silence." Grab her." Panic surged through her. Without thinking, she spun around, reaching for the door handle. She opened the door, forgetting the items that she had picked and started running. Three guys were chasing after her and Elena couldn't help, but flee from the scene. She caught a glimpse of some of the men in black suits roaming around in the parking lot. Elena almost froze on the spot. She didn't know what to do until she saw an exit sign to her left and turned towards it. Without thinking, she grabbed the handle. Elena's pulse thundered in her ears as she ran, her breath ragged. The footsteps behind her were getting closer - too close. She needed to hide. Now. Her gaze darted to a sleek black car parked by the curb. Without thinking, she yanked the door open and threw herself inside, slamming it shut behind her. Silence. The air was thick with the scent of leather and something sharp, metallic - like blood. A slow realization crept over her. She wasn't alone. A man sat in the shadows, legs spread in a position of effortless control. The dim glow from the streetlights barely illuminated his features, but she could feel his gaze cut through her like a blade. Elena stiffened, her breath caught in her throat. The air shifted, and then - his voice, low and ice-cold. " Who gave you permission to get in my car?"
