CHAPTER 8 – When the Alpha Breaks

474 Words
Training was meant to be routine. It turned into a bloodbath. The pack gathered at dawn, warriors circling the training grounds, tension thick after the previous day’s incident. Whispers followed Arielle as she stood at the edge of the field, Kael’s unspoken order ringing in her ears—observe, don’t engage. Lyra stood opposite her, eyes glittering with something sharp and cruel. “Careful,” Lyra said sweetly. “Power that comes too fast usually destroys its owner.” Arielle didn’t respond. The first clash of warriors shook the ground. Kael moved among them like death incarnate—correcting, punishing, pushing them harder than usual. His control was razor-thin. Arielle could feel it through the bond, a violent storm barely contained. Then it happened. A warrior lunged too aggressively. Kael reacted on instinct. He hit him—hard. Too hard. The warrior flew backward, slamming into a stone pillar with a sickening crack. Silence slammed down on the clearing. “Alpha—” someone started. Kael’s eyes blazed silver. “Enough,” he snarled, voice layered with his wolf. The air buckled under the force of his dominance, wolves dropping to their knees. Arielle staggered. Power ripped through her chest in response—not pain, but answering force. Her body reacted before her mind could stop it. “Stop.” The word left her lips calm… but absolute. The pressure lifted. Every head snapped toward her. Kael froze. For one impossible second, her voice had countered his Alpha command. Shock cracked across his face. “What did you just do?” he demanded quietly. Arielle’s hands trembled as she stared at them. Silver light flickered beneath her skin again. “I—I don’t know.” Lyra’s eyes widened with fear. That was when the arrow flew. A sharp whistle cut the air. Kael moved instantly—but Arielle was faster. She turned, lifted her hand— And the arrow stopped midair. Gasps tore through the clearing as it dropped harmlessly to the ground. Arielle’s heart pounded violently as she stared at it, terror and awe twisting together. She hadn’t touched it. She had commanded it. Kael was beside her in an instant, his body a shield, his hands gripping her shoulders. “Who fired that?” he roared. No one answered. From the trees, Lyra slowly stepped back, her face pale. She hadn’t expected Arielle to survive. Kael pulled Arielle closer, lowering his voice, raw and shaken. “You’re not just awakened,” he said. “You’re dangerous.” Arielle met his gaze, breathless. “So are you.” Something dark and possessive flashed between them—recognition. Behind them, the pack trembled. Because they all felt it now. The balance of power had shifted. And the rejected Omega? She was no longer something to be protected. She was something to be feared.
